i was out calling coyotes yesterday and called in a lynx. it was at 15 yards for while then walked out to 36 yards and sat down, even yawned and stretched before eventually walking off. the radio collar was a good tip-off otherwise at first glance i would have thought bobcat.first lynx i have seen or called in. i did get a coyote about a half hour later, a huge female, at least 40 pounds, one of the biggest coyotes i have killed. being at 11,000 feet about 2 miles in i only brought out the hide. so i did not weigh it.
last year i weighed several coyotes, they ranged from 27 pounds to 36 pounds. i killed 39 last year most go about 32 to 35 pounds.

Have you ever called in a big kitty by accident? Dont think I'd like to be in that situation. Nice story btw. thanks for sharing.

If it was a bobcat would you have shot it? Aren't there only like a couple hundred Lynx in the whole state? Seems like I recently heard a story about their reintroduction.

What condition was her coat in? What I'm asking is whether or not it's a good hide, or still thin "summer time"" type of hide.

What are you getting price wise on the fur? Coyote hunting is fun. I'm a newbie and get coyote fever. Deer no problem. Coyote come running in and I'm a wre[ROFL1]ak. Killed one of 5 that I called in. Couldn't tell you how many stands I've made. At this rate I won't kill 30 in my lifetime

the lynx hide looked pretty good, but with cats it is hard to tell. they never look as ratty as a spring time coyote. i did some looking and the DOW website has a form to fill out for where and when you saw one. they started releasing them back in '99 and stopped in '06. the website says that all their goals for lynx reintroduction have been met. i dont know how many there are, but according to the map of satellite and radio locations, there are quite a few. the one i saw had a radio collar, that makes it at least 5 years old if it was released in '06.
the coyote hide was very thick and full, great caramel color, not much for guard hairs. i almost didnt skin it, but i am glad i did, when i put it in the freezer it looked really good. i have a person that buys processed furs from me now. not sure how many she will take, i have 7 in the freezer right now. i know of no one that will pay much more than $15 for a raw hide. i think about $30 is about the minimum i need to bother to skin one.
i got another coyote this morning, snuck up on her out in the pasture. she was laying down at about 250 yds. one 60gr sierra hollowpoint from end to end, she never got up. a small one, probably this years pup, but an awesome hide, looks like a december hide.
bobcat season usually starts december 1.
