View Full Version : Finally! I'm an AR owner now! And I have a question.....

Just bought a DPMS "mid-length" on Saturday, in beautiful condition. Seller said he'd only fired 92 rounds through it, and it looks like it. Looks brand spanking new. Has a scope mount/rail on top, and a Magpul(?) flip-up rear sight, came with the case and all paperwork, two stock 30-round mags, and four Magpul 30-round mags. $800 for the package.

It shoots great, but it's hitting quite high, and I can't figure out how to change the elevation on the rear sight. It has an obvious windage knob, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to adjust the elevation. At 100 yards it was hitting about 1-1/2 feet high.

The front sight post looks like it can be turned, but it's square and appears to require a special tool. There's also a tiny little button or pin, that looks like it depresses and unlocks the front sight for adjusting.

So, how do I do this? Is the front sight post the normal elevation adjustment on these? Do I need a special tool? Where do I get one?

I'm sure I'll eventually put a scope or other optics on it, but for now I just need to dial in the sights it has.

Thanks!

<EDIT> just added some photos. I haven't taken any yet, these are from the seller. I'll put up some better ones after I shoot some with my camera. I hate blurry photos, but gun porn is gun porn.

You can definately get a special tool for the front sight to make it easier to adjust, but you can also use the tip of a bullet or a nail. We always had a nail to use when I would go qualify, but that was with standard sights. The Magpul back up sights don't have vertical adjustment on the rear sight, or at least if my set does I sure don't see it. The A2 type rear sight does have vertical adjustment but it's for after you zero the weapon with the front sight vertical adjustment.

You can buy a special tool for it but I use the tip of a 5.56/.223 round to get er done. Counter clock wise to bring it up some.

FMJ tip works.

Yeah, what they said, I just the small screw driver tip on my Multi-Tool.

Don't we have a AR zeroing guide around here somewhere?

OK, I did try that, and could depress the button with a bullet tip, but how do you turn the post? Tried doing that with the bullet, didn't want to move. I see in that video a brief photo of a tool, guess I can order it from them?

Small bit of oil on the front post and let it sit for awhile. Should loosen it up enough to not be a complete pain.

Pretty sure if you call Bowers (http://www.bowerstactical.com/index.htm) they will get a sight tool for you.

I have to admit after years of just using the bullet, nail or multi-tool to adjust the front sight, I caved and bought a sight tool, it's a ton easier than the other ways, kinda kicked myself for not buying a few 10+ years ago!

But yes, Mike should have them in the shop, if not that someone need to kick Rob in the big toe and get him back to ordering parts!

It's probably stiff because the sight body is plastic and there's some tension on it. In a case like that the tool is probably your best bet.

Having said that, I should probably get one myself since I haven't zeroed the backups on that rifle I have a set on. Hope Bowers has a couple....

Using a small nail sounds pretty good. I use a small jewelers screwdriver that I can buy at any hardware or Dollar store. Without those tools or a store bought front sight turner, a bullet tip will have to do. You can also make a front sight turner by making little indents in the neck of a spent 223 shell casing. I haven't made one myself yet , but I've read that it is doable.

Poking the little pin down isn't a problem, it's turning the sight post itself. My fingers are too fat to get ahold of it, and I don't want to scar things all up with nails & such. I'll just go by Bower's and buy the correct tool. I spent $800 on the rifle, I think I can spend another $8 on the tool so I don't fawk up the rifle! I'm a cheap bastard, but not that cheap.

Yes, Bowers has them 'cause I bought one there recently. It's a cheap tool and the right tool makes life easier.

So each quarter turn on the front sight equals? I guess it matter for different length barrels, so...mine is a 16 inch. I'm used to the M1/M14 sights, far superior.

Congrats on the new tool....the AR that is!

So, I called Bowers this morning and I swear I thought he said they were open 10-6. I stopped by at 5:45, and all closed up. Did I get the hour wrong? Or are they closed on Mondays? I also called directory assistance to get the number, twice, and was told both times there's no listing for them in either Denver or Centennial. Yet I was standing right in front of the place.

Set of big black double steel doors, says Bowers Tactical, Entrance. Banner on the wall over the doors, kind of at the back of this little building on Yosemite. Right place? Sure matched the directions he gave me.

Sounds like the right place to me. Might have been a slow day and they left a little early ?

Yeah, Mike said he's the only dog in the yard on Mondays, and he left early to hit the bank. I just missed him.

I added photos above to the OP.

I just came back from picking up a red dot sight for it! I'm thinking about a bipod next. The rest, I'm fine with it. But the trigger is kinda stiff, just a tad......

Oh, that scope mount....is that considered a "riser"?

and laser
and chainsaw
