I was wondering how do I obtain an SBR stamp in Aurora/CO? I've heard of going the LLC route, but I'd like to try getting it as a citizen.

How much does the stamp cost?

Is the paperwork at the Sheriff's office like the CCW paperwork?

Is it hard to obtain?

What are the rules about owning a SBR?

If I own a standard length rifle and want to make it an SBR, once I have the stamp can I have any gunsmith cut the barrel down to make it an SBR?

I think its funny that people post useless comments like yours. Why not be truly helpful and constructive instead of being a smart-ass... AND assume I didn't use the search function...

The beauty of messageboards is you don't have to read everything or respond to everything. If you want to boost your post count, there is a thread for that.

Is it hard to obtain? No. Just takes a few months, so it is time consuming.

What are the rules about owning a SBR? Just like owning anyother firearm. Just make sure you keep a copy of your tax stamp with the gun where ever you take it.

Answers in red. Some may be wrong though so do your own homework. Best place to start is with the ATF website: http://www.atf.gov/forms/firearms/

If you send them an email, I usually get a response in less than a day.

You have to notify ATF before you cross state lines with it, and better make sure it is legal in the state you are taking it to. You may not be able to have the stamp directly in your name if you can't get a LEO sign off. I'd go trust route over LLC any day. Don't be mad at Graves, this is like the third thread we've had about obtaining a stamp in the last two weeks. There is even an entire NFA sub forum that probably has all your answers.

We should probably make topics like this a "STICKY" then if its a repeat question. Seems reasonable if its asked over and over.

I don't know what NFA means, so I wouldn't have known to check there.

The search engine doesn't like anything shorter than 4 characters. SBR it doesn't like. SBR stamp how to obtain, also has less than 3 characters in the string.

If you search on Short Barrel Rifle, it searches on all three words, if you put them in quotes in returns everything from pictures to a boat load topics that say nothing about how to obtain a SBR stamp...

Then you have typos, barrell, barelled, etc.... so this basic search engine is not really useful...

Certain topics will always reappear time and time again such as where's the best CCW class, whats the cheapest, where's the best shooting range, whats the best caliber rifle, etc...

Some people check the message boards very frequently and very thoroughly. Others use it as a resource and look for information that they are interested in.

Topics also don't necessarily always stay on topic and evolve... So it becomes hard to find info on SBR stamps when its the topic "Best .223 Rifle"...

As I stated earlier its simple enough to be helpful and point someone in the right direction as it is to be a wise guy, or even simpler yet to not even respond to a question you (third person) may find annoying, bothersome, or often asked.

Thats just the nature of message boards.

NFA = National Firearms Act.... or in my line of work "Non-Foaming Agent".

Hopefully this site is helpful. We have our asses and our smartypants but we all get along and share the info sooner or later. Hope you found the answers you were looking for.

strange noob question, but are the stamps for sbr's COMPLETELY seperate from suppressors or once you have the stamp does it cover both? i know stupid question but i figured id ask and after light reading i couldn't find the specific answer.

most leo's give you a hard time about sbr's? ive been really thinking of biting the bullet and getting one. one thing i was a tad concerned with was what if the lower were to break or crack somehow? is the stamp only in the name of that lower or can you get it switched later?

A little clarification. When you buy an NFA item like an SBR gun, MG, silencer (can), you are paying a transfer tax that is represented by a postage type stamp on your form 4 (or1).The stamp has the items serial # written on it by the BATFE. They are not transferable between NFA items. The term "stamp" is used as a slang term for NFA items." Got a new addition to the stamp collection today." If you have not done an NFA transfer before, I HIGHLY recommend you go thru a dealer. There are several reputable ones on this board. One last thing; If your NFA item is destroyed beyond repair, the "stamp" does not entitle you to create another with the same Serial #. Protect your investment.
