View Full Version : Why I don't belong to the NRA
Today in the mail, I received a political advertisement for Betsy Markey. For those of you not familiar with her, she is a democratic incumbent running for congress in northern Colorado. This ad was all about how the National Rifle Association supports this fine DEMOCRAT that voted about 95% with Pelosi! The mailing has a return address of _Colorado Democratic Party_. I have NEVER been a registered democRAT, and I have never backed any democrat. So, where did they get my address? I used to belong to the NRA.

I guess the title should read, "Just one of the reasons I don't belong to the NRA."

Odd,
I've gotten no such advertisement.

Byte, I believe you live in the 2nd. Am I right? They endorsed the GOP candidate there.

I didn't get that particular ad, but in this months issue of American Rifleman (I really enjoy that mag btw), it had the little NRA ballot, showing who they supported, and she was listed. The NRA is headed down the wrong path, and has been for awhile now. My membership expires at the end of the month, and I don't plan on renewing, instead i'll put that towards a RMGO membership, which I should have done a long time ago.

You also have to look at the fact that the NRA cares nothing about any of the other issues a candidate stands on except for gun control. They base their decisions strictly on that. If there is a left wing socialist incumbant that shows a record of being pro-gun vs a card carrying republican running against them with the same views on firearms, they will endorse the incumbant. (that is their policy) They are one issue, and one issue only.
The NRA has endorsed an increasing number of left candidates because they have fallen to the long reach of the NRA and its power. Even Dems/Libs/Commies, whatever you want to call them, will side with the NRA on gun issues because they know the fallout of not being supported by them. The NRA rating system is looked at very strongly in the eyes of political candidates. They know their career may be on the line if they are on the bottom of the list.
Yes, I believe strongly in supporting RMGO and other organazations with the same goals, but remember, the NRA is strictly a pro second ammendment institution. They don't give two craps about health care, bailouts, taxes, etc.
What jscwerve said. The NRA endorses candidates that are full-force for their issue--the 2A. That doesn't mean you are supposed to vote for those people--there is more to life than the 2A, or any other single issue, especially in our days. What it is supposed to be is an aid to you to know on that particular issue and only on that issue what your best choice is. If we think there are other issues that also come in to the equation of who is the best candidate, issues which are just as important (and I hope we all do) then we have to factor them in, but that is hardly a fault of the NRA. You wouldn't blame an electrical power group for endorsing candidates that are pro-electrical power, or a farm group for endorsing candidates that are pro-agriculture. I don't get why we keep blaming a 2A group for endorsing candidates that are pro-2A?! The NRA is not a republican group, it is a 2A group!
For being a single issue organization, they sure suck balls at protecting their one issue. Catering to occasional hunters and trap shooters is a far cry from being advocates of the second amendment. The NRA wouldn't touch NFA legislation under any circumstances. Hardly a "one issue" organization.
The NRA can cram it. I received the same Markey bs in the mail from them. I also saw it in this months American Rifleman magazine. In the magazine they also did not give an endorsement for gov. I finally received their endorsement selection for gov in the mail the other day. At least they finally got that one right. It was for Tancredo.
Ad that all up plus all the support they gave Reid for helping to build a large shooting range in Nevada, even though his past voting history sucks=they are headed in the wrong direction.

Here is a good read on some of the things they do to influence policy in the capitol. I understand your dislike of the NRA, they are not a well liked group in many circles, even gun owners. The do however do more than cater to "occasional hunters and trap shooters". The NFA thing is a different issue. Last time I checked, it wasn't illeagal to own a suppressor, MG, or SBR, just a lot of red tape.

I give them my membership $ for the magazine. They put out a lot of good info and help make good informed decisions and alert people to stuff going on. They have to play the politics game and while I wish they were more like rmgo and played better hardball they still do a lot of good for gun owners.

Think about it. If they succeed, and there were no more gun laws, people would have no reason to send the NRA money...
