View Full Version : Pheasant Hunting in Nebraska
Okay start on opening morning, we bagged a couple each by 8:00am. It was pretty hot and dry as you can probably tell by the looks of the pups with their tongues dragging on the ground. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/Tedwantsthemdead/NebraskaPheasanthunt2010.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/Tedwantsthemdead/NebraskaPheasanthunt20103.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/Tedwantsthemdead/NebraskaPheasanthunt20106.jpghttp://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y220/Tedwantsthemdead/NebraskaPheasanthunt20107.jpg

Nice picks, cute pups. What shotty's are y'all running? How are the dogs trained? They flush and retrieve or just one or the other, etc?
The Black and White one is my buddy's 2 1/2 year old male German Shorthaired pointer (Jethro Bodine). He's learning a lot from my 7 year old female German Wirehaired Pointer (Maggie) She's a 75 pound Pheasant Whore. Not much gets by her, she's got a great nose and holds a beautiful point. Not much of a retriever on Pheasants though. She will bring back Quail and Doves. No special training we just go out a lot, natural instincts and a wonderful Bird Dog named Buck may he rest in peace, he showed many of pups the the way it's done. He was the best Iv'e ever had. Also a German Shorthaired Pointer. That red gun is a Winchester 12 gauge SX3 and my friends is a Remi 1100? I think. We'll probably go back after Thanksgiving and hopefully the weather will be cooler with a little more rain or snow to wet the ground. It was so dry and not even any morning dew or frost.
Nice pics. Kansas opens the second weekend and cant wait. Been seeing lots of birds out there this year..

Talked to a landowner in kansas last week. he say's there on track for a record year of birds. they've had 3 hatches this year.[Tooth]
Looks like some of us need to plan a fun trip! I am off the 15-18 if anyone knows of a good place to go!

yeah I will be stopping there on my way back from South Dakota next weekend
Wifes family has about 300 acres between 2 different locations. ones next to the HWY and the Wia right before you hit the co-op. Maybe its being a city boy but man I'm very suited for rual living. I thinks it comes from my hate of people.
BTW your pups a very cool.

I can verify this! [Shotg]
I was born and raised in Nebraska, I used to go every youth season and would usually bag a couple.
Cute little fellers, how old are they now? Have you ever owned a Setter before? As you know English Setter's are a pretty large breed and have a very long silky coat of hair. Just right for picking up every sticker, burr, and the worst twisty weeds you can imagine. I had a English Springer Spaniel a long time ago and he’d go through the field sometimes and get into some bad sticker patches and OMG! He looked like he had a head full of curlers, with his ears pinned to the top of his head! Lol! His flags on his legs and tail would be so loaded up with Sand Burrs and Foxtails they looked like they were braided. Wasn’t very fun spending half the night after a days hunt cleaning him up for the next mornings hunt. Great dogs just a lot of maintenance for me anymore. If I may make a suggestion, carry a good steel comb for the stickers and a pair of hemostats for cactus and the occasional Porcupine you might run into. Other than that have fun and happy hunting. [Beer]
Sniper, they have both, rents one out for wheat another for cattle, and the last is just natural grown wheat grass mix.... Perfect mixes wish i could make it this weekend.

they don't pick up that much. mostly in the tails and back of their legs, some on the underbelly, but not too bad.
all I have ever owned is english setters. I lost my dog Bandit last year..he was 16, had him since 3rd grade! My sister has a english setter, plus we have these two. My sisters dog isn't for hunting though. not very good lines.
those two are born hunters!
yeah they are plenty of MX, but I love the breed and they are great hunters! They will be getting a serious workout this next week in colorado, kansas nebraska and south dakota.

send me a PM if you are off during the week and we will head up if you want to go. there is lots of public land around there as well to hit up.
