View Full Version : fdree float rail system help
ok i know this isn't the ideal spot for this but i need an answer in the next two days and people don't tend to answer the other threads. ive had a yhm lightweight rail system, but it felt pretty "chubby" to me and was wondering if anyone experienced out there know diameters of other rail systems or even just knows in general which ones feel thinner. i know it tends to be the more expensive, the thinner, but i thought someone might know. i tried looking it up but couldn't find any solid advice.
mods if this NEEDS to be moved, feel free.
TROY TRX/VTAC Extreme is 1.75 OD
JPI, VTAC and Midwest Industries are 2.0 OD

the ones you listed with the smaller diameter are only top rail or selective rail systems though right? im looking at a full rail system. ive heard DD are good in that regard, theyre just so expensive! haha

The DD rail fore-end I have on my .300 Fireball Carbine is about standard height, but is narrower than usual. I do have a knurled free float tube on my 1-8 varmint gun that seems a bit smaller in diameter, but I don't remember what make it is. Of course, it doesn't have rails, or provision for them.
The YHM customizable forearm system is thin and depending on the length can be had for $120.
You get what you pay for, so if the DD or Troy rails are too much, what is your price range? What is it about a full rail system that you are set on? You might get with xwisex and check out the MI FF set he is selling. I'd say they are about average .. bigger than my DD lite rail but not by much
Also what type of rail covers do you use?
anyone have any experience with the troy mrf? my yhm is just too darn bulky!!! im also wondering about the bushmaster b.m.a.s. integrated system, can't even find a pic of it on a rifle

I have a Troy MRF rail and like it a lot. I run an AFG, XTM panels on the sides and ladder rail covers on top and can wrap my thumb up top comfortably! And I dont have big hands. I can get you measurements tomorrow if you like?

that would be great. it looks nice and is affordable, so if its the smaller diameter than yhm i might get one
I don't have much else but DD Omegas, and a couple Lites but they seem to have the least amount of bulk that I've seen. With XTM panels they feel just about like standard hg's. If mounting something is your only concern id look into a set of MOE's as they're not too fat.
Side to side OD is 2 1/8" and top to bottom is 2 1/2". Here's a crappy cell phone pic.

cool thanks man. that looks a lot smaller than my yhm. ill measure mine just for comparisons sakes. appreciate the help
sorry one final question. anyone know the difference between the mrf and the trx standard? the trx standard is a bit cheaper and the lengths are SLIGHTLY different, but i didn't know if the diameters would be different, or maybe the weights or what. price difference can be significant at some places.
I think the only difference between the two is that the TRX standard is a one piece design.
