View Full Version : Tactical Flashlights?
Whats a good brand and model, low cost tactical light?
are the Cree or ultrafire lights any good?
some say 240 and 300 lumens are they really that bright?
Brighter then my stinger led flashlight?
Surefire is the most notable brand, offering a plethora of options. The most common is the G2 (about $35-40, $50 for LED) and can be used handheld or mounted on weapon systems using basic 1" scope rings.
Check out Phenix as well if you want to go cheaper.

X3 on the Fenix. I just picked up the LD10 a few weeks ago, as my daily carry light, and let me tell you, it is awesome. Small, yet packs a punch. Fits in my back jean pocket, and I can't even tell it's there. The differing brightness levels are a must for me, and the fact that twisting the bezel of the flashlight, takes you directly from the lowest output, to the highest, much nicer than having to click your way thru the different modes. Highly recommend this light, it can be purchased at Army/Navy surpluss off of broadway. They also have a couple other Fenix models.

I thought I would be skewered because Fenix is Chinese.

FYI - I just looked at the new G2 mount that Mount and Slot had at the gunshow, looks really cool and well designed. I'll look into putting one on my ar.

I too bought a Fenix LD10, met a guy at my local range that is a rep for Fenix Outfitters (or something like that). $55 and this thing is awesome! I JUST replaced the battery on it after 5 weeks, and guess what? It uses standard AA batteries. I use my rechargeable 2600mAh batteries and use it daily (I work at an observatory, moving around a telescope when lights are out and at night too).
Define inexpensive? Define how much you feel you will have to rely on the light.. Lights are kinda like optics. Most do the same basic thing, but the higher the price (and the more reputable the manufacturer) generally the better and more reliable the light (and optic) will be. Candlepower forums has a head jarring amount of information that stretches beyond "Hey SureFire rules" or 100 lumens isn't enough..
A good reliable and common configuration is as noted previously, the SureFire G2LED with any number of 1" mounts. The G2 is more or less an industry standard both for quality, reliability and form factor. There are good reasons for that. I"m not bashing Fenix, Streamlight, Olight or any number of the other fantastic manufacturers out there.. the G2 is just a good starting place.
have tried the surefire g2 led 120lumen and the g2x says 200lumens and its not worth the money. my stinger flashlight is better its only 90 lumens.
I want a gun light that does as good as my stinger c4-led light (185 lumens on high) and that does not cost a arm and a leg.
It's not cheap but I have a Strion LED that I carry and love it.

Surefire 6P
Makes my Living room Daytime and always works.
No Fancy tacticool clicky or switch-cable or nifty $300 Mount.
Think I got the Mount from here for $5 er something...
I am looking for a TLR-1 for the XD though :D
I have all so tried the 6P its just as bad as the G2
The surefire P6 and G2 has good output but not so good on intensity and distance
I hunt coyote at night so I need the light to reach out about 100 meters

i use m961 light and i love it. Not sure about g2 lol. G2 light is for camper not tactical light but depend on how you use it. You can use a regular light to do tactical thing [ROFL1]

Then a "tactical" light is not your best choice. Look at hunting specific lights. I don't know any models off the top of my head but there are inexpensive lights designed for your applications.
I have a Fenix PD30 and love it. However, I've never put it on a gun. The thing is bright, though! It's my carry light.
SureFire might have better tactical options for guns, I don't know. But SureFire couldn't beat the price-to-performance ratio the Fenix PD30 gave me at the time (about a year ago).
You'll definitely want to look at how the light operates. For example, the PD30 doesn't have the "push a little for temporary light and all the way to stay on" feature (sorry, I don't know what it's called). And to change from turbo mode (all 265 lumens) to normal mode (not as bright) takes a small turn of the barrel. To me, that means it probably wasn't made as a gun-light to begin with. I'd love to hear if someone has done this.
