There is already a Survival knife thread, but in the spirit of preparedness, and the fact that there was some discussion in another thread, about serrated vs. straight edge preference, I figured I would start a thread about what you prefer in your daily carry knife. Maybe post new pics and reviews of new products as the come available, as well as pics of your current carry knife if you'd like. So what will it be? Straight edge? Serrated? Drop point? Tanto?
http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh297/hurley842002/IMG_20101112_202430.jpg
These are my two favorite folders, with the top tanto blade being what I carry 99.9% of the time. I really like my Columbia River knives. Sorry for the crappy pics, dang camera phone.
I received some cheap Chinese made knives from CDNN for free as part of an order once. They were crap but I just kept them around for the heck of it. Today, I broke both of them with my bare hands, by just folding them while they were locked open (great way to cut yourself by the way). Now they are in the trash. I know that's not much to contribute. I just wanted to point out that some brands really aren't even worth getting for free.

I usually carry one of a few CRKT Viele Wasps's (8012 serrated and the 8001 non-serrated) or a Pointguard...

Been carrying the Emerson CQC7A for over 9yrs. Tried the Chisel grind Tanto point version of this knife, sold it. For me the Tanto point is a not a practical everyday tip, didn't slice very well.
Carry the Fallkniven F1 when camping/hiking.

A friend of mine who worked with SF guys in Iraq said they all carried Emersons (first choice) or Benchmade. I tend to defer to the judgement of the people with practical field experience.

A silver straight edge for off duty. On duty it's a black half-serrated. Good knives at a great price.

Although a bit pricey for my taste, the new SureFire Crank looks quite promising. Maybe they will come down in price at some point, they are brand new after all.

When I was a kid, alot of us had pocketknives and I carried one to school everyday. My how times have changed!
Of course, I keep multitools and other stuff in my truck's locked toolbox, but I carry a Case Russlock every day. Takes a wonderful edge and the one hand opening can't be beat. Not much of a combat knife, I grant you (but I CCW a gun for that purpose), still, one heck of a good pocket knife!

Aint that the truth. Not to get too far off track, but I remember during hunting season (both antelope and dove/pheasant), we would have all of our gear, to include rifles/shotguns, all loaded up and ready to go. Now days, you and your parents would be hung for that. Believe it or not, I've only been graduated from HS for 10 years, granted I'm from a small town.

What is the deal with assisted knives? I haven't handled one, but every time I'm in a shop that sells knives, I see the guy behind the counter showing a customer one. Are folders with thumb studs really so difficult to open that people need to be assisted? What am I missing?

X2 on the above. IMO knives are no different than firearms, in that if you practice enough with your knife, you will be very effective with it. The top Columbia river knife I posted, is my daily carry, and i'm almost certain I can remove it from my pocket, and have it open, quicker than any switchblade type knife, just one fluid motion. It's all about repetition.
I'm not bashing the idea either, I just don't understand it. It seems like a half-assed switch blade because switch blades are illegal. More of a solution without a problem, and more complex than necessary.
I think I might be able to shed some light on that one.
Knife fighting.... With an assisted opening knife (I'd never use one just cause of the KISS concept) a fighter wouldn't need to flick their wrist (unintentionable movment without a means of protection or deflection can cost seconds and slashes) or move hte thumb and risk a faulty grip (thus losing the knife). With a thumb break, some inexperienced people may both use unintentionable flicks and faulty grips.
Again, someone already said it, just need to practice. To be honest, I'd take a fixed blade over a folder any day.
i would agree by repetition, i use my knife at work at least once a day normally more when there is freight i always keep it in the same place every time and when im doing somthing where its not easy to flick my wrist it helps my situation.
i like both knifes non and assisted eventually you wear it out..
If I was reduced to fighting with a folder, then I have bigger problems.
I carry a folder for utility purposes. One of my requisites for a folder is one hand opening/closing. Tha't why I like the Benchmade Axis Locks so much. Pull back the lock and flip open/closed. Ergonomics and fact that it holds an edge very well also helps.

If I was reduced to fighting with a folder, then I have bigger problems.
If you know even a little bit about the human body (not implying you don't), a good sharp knife can do much more damage than than most handgun calibers at close distance, plus your surroundings may not always be conducive to using a firearm (i.e. crowded area, person in the way of your backstop, etc.). Besides, a backup plan is always nice to have.
a good sharp knife can do much more damage than than most handgun calibers at close distance,
Rgr that, there are about 5 places on your body (depending on body mass/size/etc) where one clean stab would end the fight whereas a clean shot at extrmemely close range can miss vitals by mere milimeters and make a clean hole where the wound is cauterized or non-life threatening and the fight could continue without the person realizing they've even been shot due to an adrenaline dump.

Can we get a couple links to some dealers that carry some of these knives? I know the Army Surplus near me has a bunch of knives, and the guy behind the counter has always seemed pretty knowledgeable/helpful to me, but some of their stuff is way over priced. For instance, they have the Lansky sharpening kit for sale at $49.99, and the link on here it was only $37.99.
Sadly, I don't know of anyplace local that has any kind of a selection of knives. These should get you started though.

When I carry a knife it's a Cold Steel Recon 1 Tanto half serrated. I've been looking for a smaller 'pocket' knife with an easy open mechanism and a lock. Something I can carry every day would be nice.

I carry the CRKT M16-13SF as my EDC. I like the handguard, plus it makes it possible to open as I pull it from my pocket/waistband, if the need should arise. It also has a manual locking device that turns pretty much to a fixed blade. I like the sturdiness of this knife.
I used to carry the CRKT M16-10KZ as my EDC but I opted for SF model with the additional ridge to open as you pull it out, with the clip reversed for blade-up carry. I keep this smaller one in my backpack for use when I don't have my SF13 on me.

Trey is the guy I take everything to get sharpened up. I loaned my camp axe out and it came back with chips in the blade, he fixed it up for me. My girlfriend's hair cutting shears are sharpened by him. He can show you how to take care of most blades, because he probably owns one just like it. I've no clue how many blades he owns, and can shave with.

Gerber slim aluminum with a partial serrated blade. Nice cause it folds so skinny it can easily share a pocket with other stuff and it doesn't have any sharp edges to catch your hand (when folded :)

I do a modified Martial Blade Concepts "Janich Carry" now that I'm training with them. Surprised no one else has mentioned them.
Blackhawk Be-Wharned for primary people cutter only, tip up front right pocket carry. Secondary/utility is a CRKT Point Guard that will be soon replaced with a Spyderco Endura when I can find one with G10 scales. Tertiary/utility rear pocket or pack carry is a CRKT Mt. Ranier. Soon to be replaced by a Spyderco Delica, again as soon as I can fond one with G10 scales.
There was a post about "if I'm fighting with a folder I'm already in trouble." I used to think that way too. Until I read "Contemporary Knife Targeting" and started the MBC training. Knives can be very effective against gross motor skill "shankalicious" type attackers.
This is a good thread, interesting to see what people carry.
About assisted opening-
I used to carry a Kershaw Blur on my ambulance everyday, it was really handy to have the blade pop open in gloves, either turn out or nitrile. We used some heavy gloves and it helped to be sure, no finger nails. Also, my other hand was often busy before I would cut a seat belt, and I liked how it was a sure thing one handed open. Keep it sharp enough and I had no use for serrations. In fact I like straight blades more as they don't get hung up on shit and I could take care of it better. That knife had some serious texture as well, also handy wet or in gloves. Finally, it had an open body, i.e. easy to clean out, I was fully opposed to knives that were hard to clean the crud out of, as we weren't talking pocket lint.
As of now I tend to carry a Spiderco Delica. Same reasons as above, but it weighs less and its thinner, and I haven't had to cut a seat belt in some time so I figure I can get a little more comfortable with a lot less speed.
That's great input BigMat, thanks.

Just picked up a Swiss Army "camper" this evening. I grew up carrying a Swiss Army knife, but haven't owned one for probably 13 years or so. I will pair this with my Columbia River (hopefully soon to be Izula), with the Swiss handling a majority of the general cutting needs, and a nice sharp edge being kept on the Columbia for defensive purposes and heavier tasks. The Swiss Army is small enough to fit in my pocket and I don't know its there, but the tools inside could prove to be a lifesaver at times, and with two blades, what's not to love.

Try one, you'll see.
I carry a Kershaw Blur everyday, drop point, half serrated. I keep it in my left pocket and practice using it that way. I figure since my handgun is on my right, if for some reason my right hand is tied up or otherwise unable to get my gun then at least I have another weapon available with my left hand. But that's all just in theory, my knife has never seen anything more scary than a taped up box.
Ever since I've been working in a warehouse, I've been wearing a knife on my belt every day. For the first day I tried using a cheap shit, Maxim Chinese knife, but since it was half serrated, it wouldn't open boxes well. Probably because it won't hold an edge and the smooth part would be defeated by tape. So lately I've just been carrying a cheapo boot knife on my belt. I managed to get a decent edge on it with one of those cheap, one-handed sharpeners.

Best bet on a knife in a warehouse is a box cutter with extra blades. Lowes and Home Depot carry some that are quick blade change. I always carry one clipped to my pocket when working. Cutting open boxes all day is extremely hard on knives due to glues and even clay in the composition. Got that info off Blade Forums. [Beer]
Anyone here have the Kershaw Blur S30V? I'm wanting to buy this one but what others would compare. I'm trying to stay under $100! How about the ZT 0350...knife-connection has them for about $105 shipped right now. I like AO knifes so please point me in the right direction[Beer]

I have a ZT 0200, in good condition, that I might part with for that price. PM me if your interested.
Not familiar with the Blur but the Shallot Composite is a really nice knife. My only complaint is that there are no thumb studs.

I am still a Benchmade Griptilian 551 fan.

That explains why I had to sharpen that cheap knife every day after work.

I'm surprised there has been no mention of SOG knives. The Trident has served me well for years.

I've wanted a Trident for quite sometime now, just haven't forked out the dough for one. I really like my Seal Pup Elite, and that Trident is similar in many ways.
I got a free SOG in the mail once, but the TSA stole it from me. True story.
Yea I got a free SOG Micron Tanto in the mail also, great little key chain knife!!
Ah Pook thanks for the offer of the ZT 0200 but I'll pass. The 0350 might be to big for the pocket and the 0200 is bigger.

Boker Auto in Tan/serrated.
I carry a Kershaw Tanto blur on my days off at work it is a quick change folding box cutter.
Also I am looking for a Ka-bar TDI locally and I have not been able to find it I saw one once at sportsman's in Thornton but never again anyone have any ideas on where to find it?
Well shit I just ordered the ZT 0350 from MidwayUSA. Knife-connection was out of stock so midway was my next option. After a $10 off coupon and the NRA round-up $.05 donation:D, my grand total was $107 to my door. Not to bad and I'll report on what I think once I receive it. Now hurry up and wait...I hate this part.

I have and carry a lot of folders. MOSTLY I carry a Kershaw Blue or Shallot. When I was LE I carried a spyderco police and would carry it now, except it's an illegal length.
Carrying a lot of pocket folders, I have to say the Kershaw gives you the best bang for the buck. Smooth and slender the shallot is my favorite. The ones with thicker scales are too bulky and get in the way and catch on stuff all the time. When I must go someone more discretely, The little kershaw chive is a good choice.
I tried a lot of the cheap knives on the net, like the S&W series knives, good design, HORRIBLE materials and they dont hold up to daily carry.
The steel on the Kershaw and Spyderco tends to be a bit harder than the typical stainless steels you see in MOST folders, they hold their edge forever.

Everyday I carry a Kershaw 1560T. I like the assisted opening and the half serrated blade is very handy. I actually bought 3 of the 1560T and 3 of the 1550ST. the ST is a black coated blade version . I bought 3 so 1 goes in B.O.B, 1 in pocket, and 1 is in line to replace when I need to sharpen the 1st.

I EDC a Spyderco Manix 2. Here is a rather long review video.

It's built right here in Golden, CO as well.
Not knocking Spyerco's quality but I never could get used to the hole thing. It just doesn't work for me. [Dunno]

So, I drank the SOG koolaid and ordered up a Trident. Not usually liking Digi cam or serrated blades, I broke out of my comfort zone.
I like the knife but it will not take the place of the Benchmade Griptillian 551.
I won't bore anyone with a thesis on every minute detail. It is assisted opening but takes two hands (or a leg) to close, all the time reloading the spring. The BM will open and close with a flick of the wrist once the Axis lock button is pulled back.
The blade is sharp but feels lighter than the BM. Also, the Trident has a 3.75" blade. This may be a legal issue for some.
I liked the ideal of the pocket clip allowing for the knife to sit flush with the pocket. I have yet to find a pair of pants that will allow this. If I push real hard, I can get the clip almost all the way down on a pair of jeans. Good luck getting it back out of the pocket.
Both handles are Zytel. Not much difference there. The BM has a little more of a curve.
The silly safety has locked up, on it's own, several times. That will probably come out at the first stripping and cleaning. The cord cutter, on the handle, seems to work pretty well. It kinda makes the handle look like a tiki head.
I'm thinking the Trident will be residing in the outer pocket of a Carhart jacket. This is my garage/yard coat that always has a knife in the pocket anyway.

Opinels when i'm messing around in the boat or Summer time cheese and crackers type blade work. I have a weakness for Balisongs because there more fun to play with then any mumbleypeg blade. There also easy to clean after gutting fish and coins don't jam them up in my pocket.
CRKC 21 is ok. Kershaw Trout is ok.
I really like the feel of my Opinel.

I carry a Gerber half serrated knife and a Smith and Wesson: Boarder Gaurd. The Smith and Wesson's blade is roughly 4" but it is my Emergeny First Responder knife with the window breaker and wire cutter which works just as well as a seatbelt cutter, and i was told by the cops i do undercover work for that its okay for me to have since you can see the clip on my pocket you wont catch me arguing with that kind of knowlegde.
Sorry for no pics gotta figure out how to make them fit better first.

The CRKT's always in my right pocket... never too far away from my hand. I moved the clip to the bottom end of the handle so the blade sits pointing upward, the nub thing on the top of the blade catches the edge of my pocket and opens the knife as I pull it out. After carrying both the drop point version of this knife and the tanto blade I have now, I gotta say I prefer the drop point. This one's on its last legs so I'll probably be replacing it soon with another drop point one. REALLY like the Veff serrations though.
The SOG Seal Pup (old version, before the Elites came out) is always somewhere close by... belt, backpack shoulder strap, etc. for the heavy lifting I don't trust a folding knife for. Concave top edge near the front of the blade is sharpened. Also my dive knife, although I haven't touched my scuba gear in over a year. Blade's missing about a 1/2" cause I broke and then reground the tip.
The Ka-Bar is usually around unless I have a reason NOT to bring it... on the MOLLE webbing on the side of my pack, sitting between the seat and center console next to the .44, whatever. Top of this one's been sharpened too. This is the one I mainly use on hunting/camping trips. Its missing about 1" off the blade for the same reason as the SOG, and I broke the butt off it too. Yeah, I abuse my knives [Tooth]. I thought this one would last longer being the D2 steel version, but it didn't help much.

I really dig that CRKT! I'll have to look into that model when mine craps out, or when I get money to burn and decide I have to have it. Those serrations look really nice.

Its a grate knife, and the serrations are awesome... they don't cut very well if you're using a back-and-forth sawing type motion cause they catch going back, but when you figure out how to use em right they're great. For rope and whatnot, you cut forward and it cuts through like butter. For something like leather, light plastic, etc. let it sit in one of the serrations and draw in back toward you, it works like a v-shape seatbelt cutter.
But like I said, when this one finally dies on me it'll be replaced with another one of the drop point versions (CRKT M21-14SF)...

I was issued this Benchmade Auto 5000SBK Presidio about eight years ago. It has held up well and it is my only daily carry knife.
