What do you expect from a ccw class?

I'm new to the pistol scene and just took a ccw class. While I got my cert for my application, I don't feel the class really taught much with respect to the law and ccw situations. The particular class I took was basically purchasing a training cert, not much more.

I'd like to take another class, I expect detailed and knowledgeable instruction of ccw laws, scenarios, Penalties, printing, techniques, etc. I expected hands on carrying training with holster demos, etc. I want my wife to apply for a permit too and the class I took would be a waste of time for her except to get the piece of paper.

I've read the forums here and at rmgo and seen the recommendations, but if anyone wants to let me know what classes to avoid (pm is ok if you don't want to "out" a shop) I'd appreciate it so I don't waste anymore time and money.

Maybe I'm expecting a Leo caliber education from a ccw class... :D

the only thing i would say is forget the penalties portion. If the situation was justifiable use of deadly force as outlined in CRS 18-1-704 through 18-1-706 you should be GTG. you will however face a civil lawsuit and the "mark of Cain" from friends and family, including those who have no clue why you used deadly force to stop that poor multiple felony rapist from finishing the deed you came upon.

thanks - I want to get some education from a professional regarding what to do if you somehow find yourself carrrying where you shouldn't (school owned real estate) - seems to be "leave immediately" based on the forums here. And what kind of penalties could I face for an accidental indiscretion like that. That might affect my decision to carry.

Felony 6. Just don't carry on school grounds. It is a pain in the ass, but you can just lock the gun in your glove box and you are cool; even in the school parking lot.

With me every situation is a possible tactical situation.
I follow the common sense approach to Schools, Banks, Post Offices usually leaving it in the truck.
Never walk around "Making Sure People Know I have Heat".
Winter is here so the big jackets help.
Always be aware of situations where someone might call out the fact you have a firearm if the should see it by accident. Mostly kids who might blurt out "Do you have a gun?" How would you handle that situation?
Constantly think of scenarios of handling situations like that and mostly the "What if I had to pull it out now" situations.
Constant Situational Awareness is key.

My wife was uncomfortable with me carrying the first few weeks but she see the way I conduct myself and the reasons for it.
Hey like I tell her, 10 out of 10 victims wished they had a way to defend themselves as they were being shot, raped, robbed etc.
Constant planning in the back of your mind is biggest advice I can give.

Banks? Why is it common sense to leave a gun in the truck at a bank? Chances are pretty good that's where you're gonna need it if you do.

I expect (and got, but this was a few years ago)
a reasonable discussion of and the manual of arms for a DA revolver, a SA revolver (I know, how likely is this, but still) and a few different types of semi-auto pistols. Preferably with demonstrations.

a reasonable discussion of where you can carry and can not, what the law says, what it doesn't say, and what situations are ok and what situations you should remove yourself from. And most importantly, links/handouts on where to find more. (here are the laws, here are the fed laws, here are some advanced discussions/books/classes)

a discussion and visual demonstration of where to carry, how to carry and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Different styles of holsters, how to draw, not just on your belt, but pulling up your shirt/jacket with the other hand. Concealed means concealed and how little guns are easy to conceal but harder to shoot, etc. handouts.

Practice. Straight shooting, strong hand, weak hand, two hands, I don't expect to be superman at the end of a few hour range hand, I do expect to be able to be shown how to do it so I can practice the drills later. handouts.

I think that should cover the basics of CCW for anyone and give them the confidence and the TOOLS to learn more.
