I am currently reading this book so I'll hold off on my final opinion until I've finished it. It seems to be overly detailed on the guns/ammo descriptions IMHO. I enjoy the story he's telling but just call a pistol a pistol.
Yeah, that's kind of how Unintended Consequences was. Overly descriptive about fire arms to the point that it would take away from the story for the non-gun appreciating reader.
He updates it occasionally, the copy I read was giving specs on how he'd upgraded from the old 486 to the brand new pentium with 256 total megs of ram...
A good read and some decent learning in there, but it's still alot of fantasy.

if things went really bad... it would take 3 days to go to complete crap...
all the grocery stores would be empty, medical care would be bad to none at all, gas would evaporate in a weeks time, city people would start to die by the hundreds of thousands in 3 weeks time across the country.... then the water and electricity would go in one way or the other most places...
basically 30 days from day 1 and 60% of the nation will have starved to death or died of thirst, lack of medical help or needed drugs, or crime.
if you think because you got ammo and knives your going to make it...your sadly illusioned.
how many of you today could just get up, walk into the woods, never come back and survive , much less thru winter...????????
yea..
not pickingon anyone just being realistic...
me.. ill just go to cancun and lay on the beach....

A Strategic Action Thriller set in the United States of America in the year 2023. After many years of economic depression, a terrorist act fractures the country. The stage is set for another Civil War as three factions battle for control of the pieces. The story takes place in many areas across the country, but centers on one extended family caught between the struggles of the rival factions. The reader will glimpse into the minds of the leaders of the factions, as well as common Americans, and travel along with them. "Operation SERF" is Book One of the trilogy.

Have you ever read Lights Out sagebrush?

So since you posted this in the Survival and preparedness forum you somehow think that we are unaware and that you are here to save us by telling us to read James book? In 2010? I bought my copy 10 years ago....... Please young man, do not be so hung up on just one book.

First off, im probably old enough to be your grandfather, im a 20 yr veteran of the UNITED STATES AIR FORCE, a specialist in Catastrophic Disaster Managment, and the last thing i am is enamoured or as you put it, hung up on one book, I SIMPLY MENTIONED IT HERE IN CASE SOMEONE WHO HAD NOT READ IT MIGHT ENJOY IT....
MY FIRST POST AND SECOND ONE HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER, IN THE FIRST ONE I MENTIONED A GOOD BOOK....
IN THE SECOND ONE I MADE A STATEMENT OF FACTS THAT STAND EVEN IF THE BOOK HAD NEVER BEEN PRINTED...
YOU MADE THAT ASS-UMPTION IN YOUR OWN MIND, THEN SPEWED IT HERE EXPECTING EVERYONE ELSE TO BUY INTO IT, somehow i dont think that happend
MOST PEOPLE HERE REALIZE THAT THE DAY THAT THE IRANIANS POP OFF A NUKE 150 MILES OVER THE EASTERN SEABOARD OR
THE MIDWESTERN USA, THE EMP BLAST WILL SET THIS COUNTRY BACK TO THE 1900's in about 10 seconds, the resulting societal breakdown and chaos WILL HAPPEN EXACTLY AS STATED. Perhaps you are not aware that the Iranians are less than 2 years from a working warhead, assuming they dont buy one first, AND SINCE THEY PUT A SATELLITE IN SPACE A COUPLE MONTHS AGO, THEIR DELIVERY SYSTEM IS NOW OPERATIONAL,
ALL THEY NEED IS ONE OF THOSE OCEAN SHIPPING CONTAINER MOBLE LAUNCH PLATFORMS THE RUSSIANS ARE NOW SELLING ON THE OPEN MARKET TO HIDE THEIR EMP NUKE IN..AND SAIL IT INTO A U.S. HARBOR..
IF YOU THINK THEY WOULDNT TRY IT... JUST REMEMBER 9-11
SO YOU READ THE BOOK 10 YEARS AGO, BIG DEAL SO WHAT...MABY..YOU NEED TO READ IT AGIAN...
FACTS ARE FACTS, AFTER AN EMP ATTACK IT WILL TAKE 3 TO 7 DAYS FOR SOCIETY TO COMPLETLY DEGENRATE BEYOND REPAIR, THE FEDERAL GOVT WILL DO NOTHING TO STOP IT, THEY WILL JUST DEAL WITH IT IN THEIR MANY WAYS, ALL PREPLANED,PRACTICED, PREPAIRED, I THINK WHAT YOU DONT GET IS THAT IF IT GOES DOWN... ITS EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF ...
AND IT WONT BE PRETTY....THOSE ARE REAL FACTS SONNY....AND LIKE I SAID THEY STAND EVEN IF THE BOOK WAS NEVER PRINTED.
YOU HAVE A NICE DAY
Thanks for rescuing us all.
What is the effective range of a nuke anyway? I've always wondered that. If one went off in Denver, would people in Colorado Springs be safe? Salt Lake City? Is the EMP effective range different than the radiation range? Doesn't the radiation range increase over time? How much time do you have if you are on the raged edge? What is the edge?

When I asked for this forum they warned me about this. I am going to ask that you calm down or your time may be short here. Ranting and raving about the sky falling does not make it so.

another good one is Out of the ashes
http://www.amazon.com/Out-Ashes-William-W-Johnstone/dp/0786002891
Its the first part of a VERY large (20 plus books I belive) series but can be read as a single novel. I highly reccomend it. I have personally read it 6 or 7 times. Its about post apocaliptic America and follows one man around as he rebuilds a very succesfull colony out of the ashes. It gets real preachy at times, but usually its just bashing liberals so its easy to deal with. Actually has alot of good ideas in it too, though its mostly fantasy. Oh yeah its got a SHIT-TON of guns and action, ya know what? Im gonna read it again this weekend!

Just finished Patriots- it's a little too fictional for me to take seriously. A feel good book for Patriotic gun/ammo hoarders.
Which one did you finish?
Sagebrush. I read that book earlier this year. I bought it from Fred Meyers and I was very surpised on how good it was.
Thanks for rescuing us all.

If you are talking about "Patriots" I will agree. Now I liked the book and depending on how you look at it... It has many "tips and tricks" that have been discussed on many forums over the years. In looking back it was almost like everything just fell into place.
I will say that there are a couple of moments that made me squirm while reading and for those that have read the book the events that happened just a couple of years ago brought a certain deja vu to myself.
We have talked about many subjects since this section came to be but one thing I have always believed in is this motto. "I pray for the best but I prepare for the worst".
Unless one has an unlimited bank account we try and do the best we can. One can glean insight and thoughts that provoke study from the fictional books that have been published.
And that is what this forum is about. I will never condone the "hunker down" mentality. To do so means that one has given up on the world and life.
We share, we inform, we support, but never will we just give in that it is "my way or the highway". And I have 9 grandchildren.;)
Just some thoughts ;)

I guess I have a hard time seeing why anyone would want to survive a full on TEOTWAWKI situation.
If society collapses and we end up living in some sort of uncivilized, broken down, Mad Max like world I fail to see the point of it.
I have a place to be in the next life that is going to make this place at its best look like shit so I really don't see the point in trying to stick around here after it all goes to hell.
And for you atheists ... if there is no existence beyond this life, then I really don't see any purpose for y'all fighting so hard to survive either ... seems to me the only folk with any real good reason to make sure they survive are you reincarnation folk who would be stuck coming back here again anyway if you died in the mess (wow that would suck).
This may shock some of you, but I don't know anything about nuclear bombs. Are they designed to be detonated at high altitude or dropped onto the ground like in Japan?
I assume that now that everyone knows about EMP effects, that any nuke from a country would try to be detonated in the air, while maybe some rogue terrorist would do it at ground level in some city or something.

Here's some stuff that I used in my under grade nuclear course:
http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/gmap/hydesim.html
if u saw the movie skyline that just came out, that's a "block buster nuke" deployed by the UAV...Designed to take out somewhere around 4/5 city blocks, yield weight around 1kt. However, hollywood thinks that a really small tactical nuke does the damage of an icbm mirv (475kt), which is considered a "city buster". Remember that the nuclear material is HEAVY!!! and airborne delivery is limited. The movie with will smith as a fighter pilot (4th of july???) had a nuke in the B2 that was delivered to the alien space ship.
Taken from wikipedia:
The B61 is a variable yield, kiloton (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiloton)-range weapon called "Full Fuzing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuze) Option"(FUFO) or "Dial-a-yield" by many service personnel. Tactical versions (Mods 3, 4, and 10) can be set to 0.3, 1.5, 5, 10, 60, 80, or 170 kiloton explosive yield (depending on version).
The strategic version (B61 Mod 7) has four yield options, with a maximum of 340 kilotons. Sources conflict on the yield of the earth-penetrating Mod 11; the physics package (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physics_package) or bomb core components of the Mod 11 are apparently unchanged from the earlier strategic Mod 7; however, the declassified 2001 Nuclear Posture Review [4] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B61_nuclear_bomb#cite_note-3) states that the B-61-11 has only a single yield; some sources indicate 10 kt, others suggest the 340 kiloton maximum yield as the Mod-7.
For reference the ww2 nukes were about 20kt. There's a lot that goes on in the pico seconds of a nuclear reaction. Air density, amount of structures on the ground all have impacts on what happens on the ground. Airbursts above around 1k feet are mainly for the emp/ground destruction, 60k feet is full emp effect, but no ground destruction. Fall out, well, wear lead underwear and have lead lungs.

I did not think it was bad. As a read "lights out" and "one second after" were better but all in all once it gets going.... I also think that many items in the book are a generational issue as well.
One of my younger solders read it but he had lots of questions about items described that were not known to him. ;)
Like compasses and tobacco pipes?
It's not bad. I give him about a D for realistic, entertaining writing and sort of hero-worshipping his own decisions, but an A for trying to make a fictional story serve as a limited sort of textbook. It was an interesting way to do it, though it's not comprehensive at that, but points you in the right direction on those subjects. C overall.

So, other then patriots I've only read Alas, Babylon and some other one set in england. I think it was called no blade of grass or something like that.
I'm gathering that One Second After and Lights Out are good reads.
Does anyone have any other suggestions?
