View Full Version : Please critique...
I got a chance to mess around with my camera today so I took pics of my Steyr M40-A1. Also got some shots of my ammo as well, please let me know what you all think. Photography is one of my many interests so it's something I like to perfect as I progress. I will probably post more later. I'll also be sure to post on the "Evil black guns" thread as well.

nice detail
i cant seem to figure out how to get clear close ups without making the picture look streatched out
digital cameras are a totaly new thing for me-i still use an old nikon f body
but its a pia to upload anything!!(and you allways loose something when you scan the photos anyway)
They all look really well shot. The first one looks like a "guns and ammo" cover.
For about a week we owned a camera that I thought was capable of a decent macro shot. I took this picture. Look familiar?

Mazin, thank you for the compliment! Will definitely be posting as my firearm family grows over time.
Stuart, what caliber is that TAP FPD round in your pic? Mine is .40 S&W. Ever since they switched to a brighter casing, I've been a little hesitant about shooting the older rounds. (Some weird thought that they will go up in value just like the Black Talons are because the don't make them anymore.)
zteknik, I know there are certain formats that don't lose quality when uploading or editing on the computer. RAW is the best because it shoots the highest quality possible. However RAW also takes up an insane amount of space. PNG format compresses your images WITHOUT losing quality like JPEG does.
tiff format is uncompressed and is huge.
Nice pics. I have a sony 4 mp and it takes better close ups then some 8 mp + cameras that I have seen. Its about the size of a 35mm camera but I just can't seem to find a decent upgrade for it yet.

Your Pistol Sucks, Send it to me for disposal LOL. your pics look good keep it up just like shooting the more you do it the better you will get
Daniel 187, do we have an abusive love/hate relationship with Steyr? Or do you want to buy one? I know CDNN (a shop in Texas, also has an online catalog.) sells it for a good price. Back when I bought mine it was about $500. I'm glad I got it when I did because after that Steyr stopped importing for a while and then when they started to import again, they raised the price. I do wish I had bought it in .357 Sig, as from what I understand they don't make them in that caliber anymore, and their value has gone up. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20 and I wanted a round that was more proven.

If you want to use Linux, gimp may be your best bet if you are looking for Photoshop-type stuff ( http://www.gimp.org/ )
I use Lightroom on Windows, and don't need anything else. I have Photoshop as well, but I've never used it for photos *shrugs*

(i might be able to touch up them pics of the mother-in-law[LOL])
My wife (the photographer) liked your photos. She especially liked the rifled slugs, although she didn't know or care what they were. It was nice for her and me to have a common interest in something for different reasons.
Have you tried Picasa? It is free and has some nice features.

+1 for Gimp
and as I understood it, years ago it also ran on Windows.
Something to think about
he GIMP team doesn't officially provide any Windows binaries. You can, however, install GIMP easily using the Windows installers by Jernej Simončič (http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/).
Download GIMP 2.6.11 (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-win/gimp-2.6.11-i686-setup-1.exe) – Installer for Windows XP SP2 or later

realy?i did not know that
i tought to use it on windows you needed an emulator or something
definitly worth checking out
thanks!
Nope Gimp works just fine in Win7 at least. So between the power house features (and associated learning curve) I use PhotoFiltre for most small resizing, resolution mods and what not. Pretty straight forward app and it's free too.
OP, the pictures are coming together man.. could just be me but some of the focal points didn't really seem to help the rest of the composition. Again, may just be me :)
