Looking at getting into 7.62 x 39 target shooting and thinking about the AR format. Anybody shoot this style? what brand? any disadvantages over AK.
Thanks for your comments

Increased accuracy over an AK due to the AR's precision construction.
Cheaper ammo.
Mags?

Check out C Products LLC for mags. I dont have experience with them but I found a few good reviews on them.

I was leaning towards an Armalite only because I have a few others but, Armalite mags are never cheap. DPMS also makes one but I don't know much about them.

I would stay away from the DPMS. I'm just not a big fan. If you decide to go with the Armalite let me know I'll get you a big discount.

I got all my 6.5 Grendel mags from C products and they've been good. I just ordered right off their website, took about three weeks but was worth it.

Thanks for the comments, Armalite AR15 on the way, 16" crome lined barrel with 1:10 twist.
Now, where's the best place to get lots of ammo?

Check in the Buyer Intel threads in the Trading Post section, There is a link for XM193 5.56 NATO Federal Lake City 55gr from Palmetto State Armory 1000 rounds for $309 + shipping.
Also Gander Mountain ( locally ) has Federal American Eagle Tactical 55gr .223 on sale for $29.99 per 100 rounds. If they still have any left .

Have Fun. [AR15]

Something to look into might be a vz-58 (the only thing it shares with an ak is it's look and chambering) they have a short stroke gas system and a falling block type lock up so they are different animals, I've hears from people that have them that they are pretty decent. (They also say they make die hard ak guys stop shooting ak's)

As far as ammo is that ar15 you have on the way the 7.62x39? If looking for x39 for accuracy I wouldn't get russian steel case ammo, as far as surplus the best you're going to find right now is probably yugo brass case. I've heard its much more acurate though that was their goal when they redesigned it for their needs. Otherwise you might want to look into reloading even then bullet selection won't be the greatest with the .311 bore. Just my thoughts

Armalite 7.62 x 39 in an AR15, "yugo brass" is that the trade name?

Yep, I have heard bad things about the steel case with the acrlylic coatings, only shoot brass in my other AR15 and AR10's

What about the battle packs that I see in some of the gun shops around town?

Sorry, When you said Armalite AR-15, I thought you got it in 5.56 NATO.
A couple of months ago I picked up 1K of Brass cased 7.62x39 in 30 round boxes all in a ammo can for $199 + shipping online, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the place.

it's known as "M67"... I don't know of local sources, JG sales in AZ had it for $199 for a case of 1260 rounds a short while ago...

199 per 1000 in an ammo can sounds like classic arms as I think they do the ammo can thing. But I believe the best deal I can think of at the moment would be like charger said at j&g sales.

I'll hold you to it ;) let us know how it runs cause I have heard some people comment on yugo surplus ammo being a bit on the dirty side but it's never made my ak skip a beat ;)
