View Full Version : *Breaking News* North Korea fires artillery on S. Korean island!

This started about 11pm last night our time. North Korea fired "dozens" of artillery rounds at a South Korean island. So far, it's being reported that 2 ROK Marines were killed, and more than a dozen wounded. South Korea has responded by firing back with 155mm self propelled howitzers.

Just wait til the psychos in N Korea get their nukes working.
The constant belligerence by the north is another example of US appeasement policy (over the last 40 years) gone bad.
I just saw this bit of news.
Another Biden prophecy of crisis for 'the messiah'.
I don't know if this is a crisis but it sure is troubling.
I think we're swamped in Afghanistan and Iraq, what happens if the nut in Pyongyang decides to start some serious shit. The current resident is ill equipped to change diapers, much less deal with a maniac like Kim.
Updated this morning, approximately 50 rounds fired by the North, the South retaliated with upwards of 80 rounds. The island is burning in many places and civilians are in bunkers.
The island is a long running point of contention between the two Korea's and the South has been running both land and sea based military exercises in the West of the peninsula.
I'm bummed for the civilian deaths, but there is not a valid need for US forces in S. Korea. Personally it's a third world shit hole that wasn't worth the 15 months I spent there. That's 15 months of my life I'll never get back.

Obamas a fuckweasel who cant even settle a dispute between a Cop and the asswipe he arrested. Let alone some one like kim-dong!!!!!

+1. But there is too much politicalization on both sides for us to ever pull out.
I don't see why we can't just "kill 'em all", tell the world to get along, and then say "Thank you, NEXT?!?!?!" HAHAH. I'm kidding, relax, take your blood pressure meds.

Sometimes you have to make an example out of someone for everyone else to learn the lesson. I have said the same thing for years, if we "eliminate" NK others would be less likely to screw around. Then we could eliminate Afghanistan, somalia, Iran, Yemen, Syria, and Pakistan. By then everyone else should be getting the idea, but if not we could get rid of cuba also.

S. Korea is a third world country? Since when?

I COMPLETELY agreew with you there. Not a very popular stance but I believe it. However, in our world view and climate, it probably wouldn't go over very well... but, I'm open to trying it. HAHA.

RIP to the KIA. Unfortunately, more and more of these are to be expected and Kim's son is taking over the country. He has to prove to the upper echelon of the armed force that he is in control and capable to face the evil South and US.
The weasels in our govt. would just stand on the floor of the UN while these two did most of the fighting. My personal opinion is that the North is like a kid poking a dog with a stick. Kim doesn't want his citizens going South and seeing what it's like so he'll just keep prodding until the South decides it's had enough of that shit.
Honestly, the South Korean military is pretty impressive, and continues to become more advanced technologically as systems like the K2 Black Panther and K9 howitzer come online. Meanwhile, North Korea is still making copies of Chinese copies of T-55s and calling them the best tank ever. I'm not sure our presence is necessary for South Korea's defense anymore, although South Korea does need our help as far as missile and air defense goes.

We do have Abrahms over there, would be fun to see NK invade at night during some training activities. I thought we had more then 30k troops there though?
every time I hear about Kim, I just revert back to the movie 'Team America World Police"

on a more serious note, I say we nuke them first and end the dispute.

We're there in part of historic reasons, and in part because the DPRK claims to have a million man army, and 3-5m more in "reserve." In truth of course they have 6 or 8 million uniforms, and a fraction of that is a proper armed, fueled, and fed military force. Somewhere in the last decade their threat shifted from being due to their actual military and more to do with their nuclear capability, and the critical fact that Seoul is a city of ~25million people, in traditional artillery range of the DMZ.
While it might be a great place to "bring democracy", I'm not really willing to spend more American lives and treasure doing it. We could always fix Burma or Somalia for less money and risk, but you don't see us doing that, either. We didn't get sold on going to Iraq to bring democracy, we got sold that they were a clear and present danger.

I think it's a good thing that Truman prevented MacArthur from nuking the chinese.
but leaving the situation unresolved was a serious mistake.
however, lil kim is dying for a fight. he keeps trying to pick one and giving him what he wants is just stupid.
maybe the solution is to go to the chinese and tell them if they don't help us fix this mess we'll cut off all imports. a world war would help fix our economy. hehe

the US appears weak, BOs apologetic stance of american policy has emboldened our enemies. The only thing that has kept NK in check since the last war was our military presence and strong foreign policy.
Our PC attitude toward warfare since WW2 has cost thousands of US lives and has made our military look ineffective. Let our soldiers fight as they used to and we could once again be a military and political force. keep apologizing and requiring soldiers to fill out reports as to why the felt it necessary to fire their weapons and we will be defending our borders against more invaders than just illegal mexicans.

I feel more confident every day that the country to roll on North Korea will be China.
We don't have the willpower, South Korea won't risk the wholesale destruction of their capital, and China's interests in long term stability and trade practically compel them to move. Rush in, disassemble the ruling hierarchy, install a puppet government to keep everything running, and the American/South Korean military off their doorstep. They'll wait as long as they can, trying to help the North Koreans get everything together, before everything goes down.
China will bide its time until the right moment, then everything unravels practically overnight.

They dont wanna fight, they are the yapping chihuahua sitting on the porch. They know if they yap enough people will feed them. He wouldnt back down and lose face, but he wont bite off more then he can chew. And the south doesnt wanna fight either they have to much to lose. I agree that China will cool them off again for economic reasons like before. What would they do if we didnt buy all their lead paint glasses and cheap wal mart crap?

A few Chinese divisions of tanks, some air support, and a million Chinese infantry would easily take North Korea. North Korea setting off a nuclear weapon in a war, with prevailing winds would leave the fallout over Beijing, sickening many.
Don't be surprised if China takes Pyongyang, US would not object. Gives China additional valuable real estate and access to direct trade with Republic of Korea.
If I was Premier of China, I would invade DPRK and keep it. If was POTUS I'd help them take it.
It is a win, win, situation for PRC & USA because North Korea is a problem for both nations.

Amen to that. I would be willing to be that there would be little partisan resistance as well.
China's never invaded another country in it's history. I will admit, modern China is nothing like itself even two decades earlier, so it's a different ballgame, but just a side note.
Some will argue that they invaded Tibet. Not me though, I've never studied it.

This is a joke, right? Tibet, Vietnam, India, Korea, and (kinda)Xinjiang come to mind just offhand, and those are in the last (half)century by the PRC.
If anything, modern China is remarkably dove-ish. Most of the above have been hit at least 2-3 times by China, historically. China's just now starting to shake off the damage from the Manchu invasion, western attempts at colonialism, a crippling civil war, and the retarding effects of communism.
The majority of what we call "China" today is subjugated and subsumed land and people. The "provinces" you see today are the remnants of full countries that were taken over in the past. China views countries like Vietnam, the Koreas, Mongolia, Laos, Thailand, Nepal, and Burma in the exact same way: future provinces. I don't have much doubt that's those countries' eventual fate. What you see in Tibet today has been going on for millennia.
PS: Little exercise... compare the size of Chinese provinces with the size of neighboring countries, especially to the south. Designed for easy digestion.

No, it is very common to be taught in history classes that China has never invaded another country.

China is a western term since the 16th century. Chung Kuo, the term the Chinese uses for itself means 'Central Power' or 'Central Country.' The term itself is a very accurate two word description of what China all about the past 4000 years - "To conquer the neighboring kingdoms/states within the Central power."
Many minorities within China do not consider themselves Chinese as they were annexed by the Han. Tibetan, Minor Mongolians, Dihua, etc etc.
Tibet, Vietnam, India, South Korea, and few others were invaded by the modern China within the past 60 years. In fact, there are a lot of noises about China invading Detroit in 2011...

Yeah.... Since when was S.Korea 3rd word country?
I don't know where in S.Korea you were stationed at, but S.Korea has top 15 biggest economy in the world.
"South Korea is a presidential republic consisting of sixteen administrative divisions and is a developed country with a very high standard of living. It is Asia's fourth largest economy and the world's 15th (nominal) or 12th (purchasing power parity) largest economy. The economy is export-driven, with production focusing on electronics, automobiles, ships, machinery, petrochemicals and robotics. South Korea is a member of the United Nations, WTO, OECD and G-20 major economies. It is also a founding member of APEC and the East Asia Summit."

Once again, the UN is going to "get tough" with N Korea. I'll bet they're really sorry for what they did after reading this:
http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/11/24/secretary-general-eyes-new-aid-north-korea/
Even as the world struggles to find workable ways to constrain North Korea (http://www.foxnews.com/topics/politics/north-korea.htm#r_src=ramp)’s expanding nuclear weapons program and unpredictable belligerence, United Nations (http://www.foxnews.com/topics/politics/united-nations.htm#r_src=ramp) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is planning how to channel new streams of aid and development money to the dangerous regime.
Ban, the former foreign minister of South Korea (http://www.foxnews.com/topics/politics/south-korea.htm#r_src=ramp), wants to engage more deeply in confidence-building measures to reassure a skeptical world of the positive impact of engaging North Korea peacefully. The UN continues to prove how irrelevant it is as an organization.
Haven't seen any reports on the news but one of our boys that is in the military now stationed in Texas called to say looks like we are going to send aircraft carriers and top guns into the Korea area for observation.
Will continue to see if his intel is correct.
The USS George Washington is scheduled for training in the waters near Korea, even before the Assault.
They've been reporting all day that they are sending a carrier over there to engage in a joint military exercise to show strength.
" A senior American offical said that an early Amarican assessment indictated that a total of about 175 artillery shells were fired by the North and by the South in response on Tuesday.
But an American offical who had looked at satellite images said there was no visible evidence of preparations for a general war. Historically, the North's attacks have been lightning raids, after which the North Koreans have backed off to watch the world's reaction. This one came just hours after the South Koreans had completed a long-planed set of military exercises, suggesting that the North Korean attack was "premeditated," a senior American offical said"
lil kim and his yapping are nothing new, but they're working on a nuke and the ROKers are getting sick of him.

This is really disturbing. When KJI's father (kim il-sung) was in power, KJI (kim, jong-il) was kidnapping South Korean nationals from Japan. I remember when he kidnapped a S.Korean movie director during 80s. He bombed Korean Air 747 during 80s. He did tons of crazy stuff.
He recently sunk a ROK naval ship, but this incident is just exponentially worse. Probably one of the worst I've seen so far that DPRK did to ROK.

Scary part is Soko is so centralized in Seoul - 25million in the metro area out of 50 million total population. I can't imagine the damage in an event of wmd attack.
"South Korean defenses on five coastal islands in the Yellow Sea had been set up primarily to guard against possible amphibious landings by North Korean troops. Critics said on Thursday that the military had not anticipated the possibility of an attack by North Korean artillery batteries, which are reportedly in caves along the North's coastline.
Previously, South Korean forces were allowed to respond only in kind-if the North fired artillery, the South could answer only with artillery-to contain any dispute. Now, officals said, the military would be allowed to respond with greater force."
I don't know, part of me hopes that the lee myung-bak can keep him heard together and not take the bait the commies are throwing out.
another part hopes that we pound lil kim into dust.
