View Full Version : Pueblo Competitions
2nd Sunday is IPSC pistol. 6 stages, one of them a USPSA Classifier. Bring 200 rounds and you should take some ammo home. Well known for the best stages in the state. If you can see it, you can shoot it. No boxes.
3rd Saturday is the Sniper Match. 10 small targets from 200 yards all the way out to 600 yards. You can shoot prone or from a bench. No caliber restrictions other than there is a 40 gn minimum bullet weight and no 338 Laupuas.
4th Sunday is 3-Gun. Well, actually Tactical Rifle. We figure that it is easy to get in pistol shooting any weekend of the month. But "real rifle" shooting, not CQB stuff, is not as easy to find. For rifle, most shots start at 100 yards with most being between 150 and 300. Know your zeros out to 400-450 yards. We sometimes have a handfull of required shots out to 450-ish. Time and daylight permitting, we also break out the 50’s and play. If you haven’t shot a 50 and would like to, I can always be talked out of a round or two.
Every Wednesday afternoon, April thru Oct is Steel Challenge. Bring a minimum of 100 rounds and get ready to do some shooting. No targets to tape, no props to reset, ect. Just shooting.
3rd Saturday is IHMSA pistol. I am not the Match Director, but I try to make as many of the matches as I can. The match director puts on a great Silhouette match. He also lets 22 rifles shoot his match even though it is a pistol match. You just use his smallbore targets. Good times.
I bet some of you read Tom's post above and thought to yourself "sounds fun, but I'm not sure I'd fit in for some reason".
Let me tell you I started shooting IPSC a year and half ago and Tom and everyone else were as friendly as can be, even to a newbie with a boring Glock and no skill. What I'm saying is don't be worried, just email Tom for the details, show up and have fun blasting away, no matter how much you suck, or how much your equipment sucks nobody cares as long as your safe and don't have a lot of attitude.
Starting in 2008 the bolt gun and Shotgun matches (4th Sundays) in Pueblo are going away. They are being replaced by rifle only matches.
End result...
2nd Sunday, IPSC.
3rd Saturdays, Sniper/Prairie Dog matches.
3rd Saturdays, IHMSA (Pistol Silhouette)
4th Sunday, March thru Oct, Tactical Rifle.
Wednesday afternoons May thru Oct, steel challenge. Pistol, shotgun, rimfire and pistol caliber carbines welcome.
There are lots of other matches going on there. Check www.pwsa.us for more info or contact me.
Dont forget to see the changes to Pueblo Rifle matches and the addition of the Sniper matches.

Check out Zak Smith's outstanding article "Fighting Optics for the AR15" in the Feb 4th edition of the Shotgun News (on news stands now) and you will see several pictures from this match (tactical rifle) and local shooters may also recognize several members from this board shooting in the match.
Come out and shoot, maybe Zak will make you famous.
Matches start up again in March.

Is sling use allowed/encouraged during a shooting match?
I have a Savage 10FCM, which is a boltgun in .308. What matches could I / should I attend? I consider myself a fairly mediocre shot but I want to put in the effort to get better.

With a bolt gun I would shoot the Steel Prairie Dog/Sniper match. You will want a bi-pod or front rest and a rear bag for that match.
Also know your zero and come ups from 200-425 yards and wind drift.

I just moved to pueblo...are you guys still doing this? I'm interested in the rifle and maybe some of the pistol stuff. It will be a little while until my rifle is ready. Oh yeah....I'll be shooting a 16" barrel AR with stock trigger and a collapsible stock though iron sights (for now), is it okay to use that setup?

We run several different rifle and pistol matches in Pueblo. Exactly which ones are you interested in?

I just want to get involved in something where I can get used to shooting at targets a different and unknown ranges. But I'm kindof up for anything, and I can bring a friend...that didn't sound right.
FYI, I tried going out to this site www.pwsa.info (http://www.pwsa.info) last night and got a web server error: access denied. My family is interested in sniper/p-dawg events in Pueblo. Thanks.

Are the pistol and tactical rifle events still happening? I've read about the sniper match but haven't seen any posts about the pistol and tactical rifle events.

I spoke with Hoser last month at the prairie dog match, and know the tactical rifle is still going, I believe the next one is March 20th but don't have my calendar handy. Don't think I asked him about pistol shoots...
