OVERVIEW
The "Sporting Rifle Match" at the NRA Whittington Center is designed to test a rifleman's skills shooting small targets from approximately 175 to 700 yards in the natural terrain, with what he can carry throughout the course.
Typical equipment used includes: a rifle capable of 1 MOA accuracy; rifle optics allowing precise hold-over for small targets from 175 - 700 yards; binoculars to spot for other shooters; and a backpack to carry water, ammunition, and a couple power bars.
The typical format is 10 stages over a 2 mile distance. Each stage typically has 6 targets to be engaged with only one shot each. Score for the match is total number of hits.
The shooters' meeting is at 7:30AM. Do not be late.

This monthly match is an excellent opportunity to test your precision/sniper rig, or prepare for the ITRC.

Match cancellations will be announced on the web page ASAP before the match, ideally by Friday morning, but it could be as late as Saturday afternoon for a last-minute emergency. So...
CHECK THE WEB PAGE http://sportingriflematch.com/ FOR POSSIBLE CANCELLATION ANNOUNCEMENT BEFORE LEAVING.
I'm bummed I'll miss the first match, but I'll be in Canada Heliboarding. When I get back I'll have my new Rem 700VS left handed with the Gemtech TPRS ready to go. Have fun guys!

Sorry I missed the May match. This looks like a lot of fun. I was "ready" (as I'll ever be) to go, but I let the weather (http://www.weather.com/weather/print/87740) talk me out of it.

PURPOSE
The "Sporting Rifle Match" at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton NM is designed to test a rifleman's skills shooting small targets from approximately 175 to 700 yards in the natural terrain, with what he can carry throughout the course. (The "Sporting Rifle Match" has nothing to do with NRA High Power "Sporting Rifle" class.)
The match format is 10 stages spread over a 2 mile distance. Each stage has 6 targets at varying distances to be engaged with only one shot each. Target distances are known to the shooter. Shooters must complete each stage's target engagements within 3 minutes. No "sighter shots" allowed. Score is total number of hits out of 60 possible. No one has shot a perfect score, yet.
This match has been held monthly since mid-2004 (except Oct-Dec/Jan which is hunting season at the NRAWC).
It was cold..

Shot this match this past weekend, had a blast. There is a well produced video at the link below that gives an idea what it is like.

Nice. Get him to talk to my boss, would you? That guy is a jerk. Hoping to make this one as well.
I can vouch for that. I've worked with Tim K's boss; he is a jerk (and not very bright).
Great fun yesterday. Here are some pics of my squad. Hoser was the big winner shooting a 56.

Looking at the picture of Hoser on stage 7, it appears they are mixing it up a little. Perhaps a little more positional shooting?
Lots of fun yesterday shooting with Tim and Hoser. Hoser put on a clinic and Tim shot well for his first match. The bad thing about this sport is we all think we can do better so we will probably be back next month.
Do they still do this match? I didn't see it on their website schedule.
Read the very first post in the thread .
So are the ranges on the range card on the website up to date?
http://sportingriflematch.com/SRMTargetChart.pdf
Wont be after setup Sat
That's what I was wondering. Thanks.
Here's one way to deal with #7, he hit 4/6.

For this shoot, what is the range of target sizes? What is the distance range?
(in case I'm not asking correctly, the type of answer I'm looking for is something like "the smallest target is a 2"x4" and the largest is am ipsc steel, anywhere from 300-800 yds")
this is a question brought on by the course of fire changing. Admittedly, I've never been there to see the other one.
There is one plate about the size of an IPSC target with no head and the rest are either round or square hung by the points . There are 2 sizes of the normal targets , The exact dimensions escape me right now and I'd have to check with the MD, the small ones are 5 and 6 inch squares and rounds respectively and they go out to around 360ish and 12 and 14 inches on the big ones and they are out to 710 for now . I'll get with Mike and confirm the sizes tonight .
The big target is at ~900 yards. I'll bet it's 18"W X 24" Tall. The smallest look like 5" diamonds, and they are typically at ranges in the 200's. Since you've shot the PD match, I'll compare to that. The targets are huge. That doesn't mean easy due to the wind, but in many cases they appear pretty large in the scope.
If fact, it amazes me every time I miss a target that looks like it should be easy. Stupid wind.
The target sizes are 5" and 10" squares and 6" and 12 " rounds and the one large rectangle at 875 .
How'd it go down there today? Family commitments kept me way this month, but I'm looking forward to May. How'd all you local guys do? Anyone clean the stick stage?
45 shooters , the wind was weird and switchy again but not as bad as the 1st 2 matches . Moved some targets around on 8 and got a 730 yd shot now .
Don't know about stage 7 , there were 2 5's on our squad .
Chuck, you failed to mention you shot a 56 and won. Nice shooting!
That was on purpose not forgetfulness

Come on now, you all know how modest Chuck is.
Congrats on the Win Chuck. The winds were tricky
Set up is at 12 this month .
Who's going? I'll be down in the morning with a new shooter.
Round count for the Magnum match?
"Shoots in Socks" good one Hoser!!!
49 plus whatever for sight in . If you make 1st round hits its only 25 .

Can a guy come down and walk the course and watch and learn?
I've never shot a match before (outside of Trap and Sporting Clays) and have gotten really interested in this. So much so that I'm planning a precision rifle build over the winter to hopefully shoot this match and others like it. (And I just REALLY want one hahaha) Even though I have a rifle I could probably shoot it with now (not very effectively though), my still healing collar bone won't allow me to shoot anything more substantial than an AR for a while yet anyway. So if Possible , I'd really like to come down and watch and walk the course with one of the squads shooting the match.

Great, I'll be heading down for the next match.
Having never shot this match, what kind of gear do I need to bring? Like what height bipod, do I need shooting sticks for the stage with the trees or is there something there to use?
All the info is on the match website . The grass was fairly high last month and its never a good idea to bring a stubby BR /BRM length bipod . New guy's are always put on squads with experienced guy's and if you need to borrow sticks it's not an issue .
What kind of sling are the guys using? I have a pretty basic sling and don't know how well it'll work with a backpack.
You won't be carrying it far. About anything will work.
Longest walk is about 3/4s of a mile , most of the stages are about 3-400ish yards apart . As long as it carries the rifle your good .

So here a newbie question:
For those that don't have 10 mags to put 6 rounds in'em...
where and how do you store your ammo on the go?
Zip lock?
Ammo box?
Ammo bag?
Do you guys just use 1 mag stuffed with only six rounds and while moving to the next stage reload the same mag?
Or do you have an ammo box and feed a round one at a time?
This is gonna be fun.... as you can see, I'm kinda over thinking this [Coffee]
I have one 10 round mag and use it exclusively. I'll keep a fiver close for a spare. I usually just keep my ammo in a zip lock in a side pocket on my back pack.

The 2015 season starts next Sunday. See you there. Unless you are afraid of getting beat by a girl or two...
I won't be there. My rifle is still at the smith :(.
I've accepted I will be beated by both of them . Won't make this one , gf having surgery. March will be the first match at raton I'll make this year but plan to be at each one after that.
Fun times yesterday. Thanks to Chuck/Mike and everyone that make this match happen.

Is stage 7 still sticks, or can we use a tripod now?
Delfuego
02-14-2015, 17:01
No tripod, but 3 legged sticks are OK [Wink]
All kidding aside, Mike explained in the morning that you can bring whatever you want to use. The caveat is, it has to be carried for the entirety of the match. You also need to setup "ON" the clock. Meaning not setup you gear, get comfy, then start your clock. Mike said you could carry a folding shooting bench if you want, but those rules apply.
Chuck or Mike may be able clarify further. But bring what you got!
The updated rules are on the match website , condensed version is you can use anything you want but you have to carry it for the whole match in a consistent manner and it is stowed and collapsed on the start signal and all set up is done on the clock . So basically use what you want but hump it all day and set it up on the clock .
Wonderful. Thanks gents! Sticks and I don't get along very well.

Had a blast this weekend... winds were unusually mild, but still tricky. 58 was the high score - holy smokes.
This time I also went down to Raton a little earlier on Sat to help with the set up. Very interesting to stand next to the targets and look back at the firing lines. Completely different perspective, and it gives one much insight as to why the winds are so squirrely there. Many of those targets are in protected little gullies, shielded from the wind, while others are completely exposed and out in the open, hence subject to relatively more wind. One would never appreciate this if all you've seen is the narrow field of view through your 20X scope.
Thanks, as always to Mike, Chuck and the gang for such a fun match.

The magnum rifle match on Whittington proper is this Sun .
Guys this is a great fun match, and it's been way under-attended IMO. So load up! See you there!
Sunday is one of those days .
Changes coming for the magnum match . New spot and more distance , stay tuned
SRM team match is this weekend , we shoot both Sat and Sun with the normal set up and sight in on Fri starting at noon .
The last Magnum Rifle Match is going to be in two weeks , 20 Sept . We will be at the new spot for the first time .
The target count is going to increase from 8 per string and 1 bonus to 10 per and 1 bonus , this will make the max round count for the match 81 rounds .
The new spot the tree line is at 2060 yards and the terrain is going to allow at least 1950 for the furthest shot now .
At this time any rifle that is legal for SRM can be shot here as well , with the disclaimer at the further distances spotting hits and misses can be difficult .
The target placement and distances will be finalized Sat before the match .
I'll post up directions later in the week to the new spot .
To get to the new spot enter the front gate at the NRAWC and go down the main road until the first left turn just before the shotgun house and the trap and skeet ranges . Go down this road past the RV storage yard and the turn toward the maintenance buildings and competitor housing . Go through the gate and there will be a left turn going up on top of a small ridge , go up the road and the firing point is up on top .

The new MRM COF is going to be awesome - I had the chance to scout it with Chuck and Mike at the last MRM. FFP is on a hilltop, with target array W and slightly downhill, instead of shooting uphill N at the Barrett range as we have been doing. Now all Mike needs to do is put out some bigger targets, LOL! See everyone on the 19th.
There will be some new bigger targets for the longer distances , closer won't change .
Right now the bonus target is planned to be a 1 MOA target at 1 mile .
Planning on being there. Not sure if I will shoot my 300 WM or my 338.
The MRM is this Sun , we will be meeting at the front gate at noon on Sat to get all the targets moved to the new spot .
Wont be there Saturday, but will be there bright and almost early Sunday.
Your never early , known you too long now to get away with that one

GREAT Match!!!!!!!!!! Thanks again to Mike and Chuck.
Need to find a 40 MOA base [facepalm]
Heck of a good time Sunday. The new location is awesome. Shooting up against that mountain is really cool.
Close target is almost 900 yards and the far target is 2023 years. C Ward absolutely center punched it. It was really cool to watch. Bullet time of flight, 3.066 seconds and still retaining over 1,300 ft lbs of energy at impact.
I was never able to hit the close target or the far target. I blame society and the prick that reloads my ammo. All the other targets, I was able to connect with.
Mostly 338s on the line. stevenc23 shot his 6.5 Creed using factory ammo and did really well. One 300 Win Mag gas gun showed up, but it took a dump and he was not able to finish.
Dino also connected on the 2023 target for the tie and then kicked my ass in the shoot-off. He put a first round hit on a stop sign sized target at 1606 yards. Very very cool.
We had two groups. One quiet group and one noisy group.
The first picture shows the targets in the meadow going into the tree line. There are eleven targets total. Ten main match targets and a single bonus target. The bonus target to the left of the main targets (find target 7 & 8, spilt the diff and go right) is a 1 MOA target at one mile. Nobody hit it...
The third pic shows the firing line. One group shot while the other spotted.

Way cool match. The new location is............well holy shit is this the best fun you ever had with your clothes on and.............well you get the rest! Thanks to Mike and Chuck for securing a place where we can stretch our legs out on our .338 Lapua's. We had a great group Sunday for the new place. Having 3 spotters calling out what was seen really helped. Great match that no matter what help is given it still boils down to fundamentals to make a hit. It is awesome to touch off a round and have to wait to see impact. Way too much fun!
This is the spot and setup we were looking for when we started this . We're real happy with how it turned out . There may be some small changes depending on how the weeds and sunflowers grow up but the distances won't change much . At 2023 depending on MV and bullets it's right at the trans sonic range depending on conditions .
The format of the match itself may change depending on attendance but not much from what it is now .
One thought now is to get started earlier to dodge some of the mirage . Any idea and suggestions let Mike or I know and we can talk about it , anything to make a better match is worth talking about .
Glad people enjoyed the new set up , now keep coming down to shoot .

+1 on the fundamentals in this game. Recoil mangagement with the .338 and shot release have to be perfect at these distances - without that it doesn't matter how one calls the wind, which is another matter altogether....
And +1 on too much fun!

Maybe others who couldn't make the match would also be interested. Or, maybe I'm the only one who wasn't there? LOL.

I believe Kevin U won with a 56
Wind wasn't a factor
Cold in the morning
Snow on the ground in some places
Muddy as all get out.
Yes you were the only one not there (besides the others who didn't show)
I think around 40 shooters

Great match yesterday. Lots & lots of people shooting long range now! Good to see some familiar faces. Thank you Chuck and Mike.
Good times for sure.
This was my first time shooting a gas gun at this match.
Forgive me but I did not read all 14 pages...
What is a "sporting rifle"? As in what are the rules/regs for what is allowed? IGNORE THIS, just clicked the link onthe first page. Second question still stands though!
Also, Hoser said gas gun... what other type is there? The DI? I don't know.

Jack got the road fixed this last week. The water washed out around the concrete low water crossing. The hole was about 8-10 foot deep around it. Having that much water coming down, be on the lookout for washouts in the trail. Good luck.

Good news. The Whittington Center Board of Directors has intervened in the closure of Coal Canyon to competitive shooting. Apparently there were a number of meetings and discussions between the BOD and the WC and the result is that we have been asked to reestablish the matches in Coal Canyon. Several of us will be meeting with Josh Adams in the near future to work out some of the details and to work on getting back to a good relationship with the WC. Mike Kolar will be returning in his role as Match Director. We anticipate that the first SRM Match of 2019 will be in February and it will take a serious effort to get all the steel back to the WC and the course reset. We will be trying to duplicate the prior course per the last range card and expect that we should be able to get pretty close. In cooperation with the WC, we do expect to be implementing some new rules, procedures and physical assets to help mitigate the wildfire risk in Coal Canyon.
The phone calls, emails, letters, web posts and other activities by our supporters here and elsewhere in the competitive shooting community have been extremely effective and have made this return of the Coal Canyon matches a reality. Thank you all.
I anticipate that JJ will be able to fill you in soon regarding how all this affects the natural terrain matches that he runs on the front side of the Whittington Center. I’m really only up to speed on the Coal Canyon matches and particularly SRM.

FYI-As you can see on the schedule the 3 Magnum Matches will be on the same weekend as the SRM.
We hope/expect to get bigger turnouts for the Magnum Match. But due to the nature of the Magnum match we will need to limit the number of shooters to approx 15.
Therefore, shooters for the Magnum Match will need to preregister on Practiscore.
The first match of the 2019 season is coming up on February 3 and we are going to need some help hauling our targets to the Whittington Center and resetting the course. More info at the match website - www.sportingriflematch.com (http://www.sportingriflematch.com/) .

Awesome news. Thanks for all the hard work to get it going again.
So far, conditions are looking good for next weekend. Only a little snow on the ground at both TWC and the target storage site. Based on the response we've received, it looks like we have enough vehicles to haul the targets. We also have about a dozen people for setup on Saturday which should be adequate, but if you are inclined to help, a few more people would be welcome. Check back here before you leave in case a weather issue arises.
Edit: I forgot to mention that setup on Saturday will start at 7:00 AM. Hopefully we will finish in time to open the practice range at 3:00 PM.

Just got word from the boss that the APRIL 6 MAGNUM Rifle match is a go once again.
BIG thanks to Kevin and gang (sorry don't have all the names of those who helped) who set up targets on their own time to help make this happen.
Signup is open and REQUIRED for the Magnum Match:
https://practiscore.com/clubs/sporting_rifle_match
Adding to Steve's post above:
Good news. The April 6 Magnum Rifle and April 7 Sporting Rifle Matches are a go assuming we don't get weathered out.
Kevin, Andy and a couple of other guys took advantage of the fact that JJ and Denise were setting up some of our targets at Coal Canyon for their 2-rifle match and got most of the rest of the course set up as well. The Magnum Rifle targets are not yet set up, but we expect to be able to get that done on Friday, April 5.
The Magnum Rifle Match now requires preregistration on Practiscore, so if you are interested, be sure to sign up. The Practiscore Link for any Sporting Rifle Match Events that require registration is https://practiscore.com/clubs/sporting_rifle_match. If you are interested in helping set up the Magnum Rifle targets, we are meeting at Coal Canyon (the SRM site) at noon Friday to pick up the targets and will then proceed to the S. Flats where we will do the setup.
The SRM course is not completely set up, but we expect that we can finish it up after the Magnum Rifle Match on Saturday and hopefully have the practice range open by 3:00 PM per our usual schedule. Setup is planned to start at 12:00 noon on Saturday and we could use a few volunteers to help out.
Please note:
- As of 2018, the match has a 3000 fps maximum muzzle velocity requirement for precision rifles.
- New for 2019, smoking will be prohibited entirely at the Coal Canyon venue for any Sporting Rifle Match events. South Flats (Magnum Rifle) will continue with smoking only allowed in your vehicle.
- The SRM course has been renumbered from 1 on the right through 10 on the left. Otherwise, the course will be the same as it was last year with only a couple of changes. The latest target chart on the SRM website reflects this.

Crap, the July SRM was won with a 59!
This is both good (for the winner, Austin B.) and bad (for me...it's about me) because the targets may get smaller and further for the August match!
Impressive that this match was just won with only one missed shot - many of the targets are small and far already...

I suspect cheating was involved. I can't be defeated without someone cheating, or gun issues, or getting wind bit, or a missed call, or a scope issue, or a feeding issue. Did i mention I was shooting factory ammo? That's the only reason I didn't shoot a 60. Plus I think there might have been cheating.
The annual SRM Team Match is coming up on August 19-20 at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, NM.
This is is a 2-day, 2-person team-match for AR15 and precision rifle using the basic monthly Sporting Rifle Match format. Expect the same targets and shooting positions as the regular Sporting Rifle Match. On Saturday, one team member is designated the “AR15 shooter” and the other team member is designated the “precision rifle shooter”. On Sunday, the roles are reversed. At each stage, the AR shooter chooses 4 of the 6 targets and gets unlimited rounds to make a hit on each. Then the precision rifle shooter gets one round at each of the 6 targets. The total time for both is limited to 4 minutes.
At this time we only have 10 teams registered, so there is plenty of room.
