View Full Version : Is there some sort of contest...

[WARNING: RANT AHEAD]
So I've been looking through the Trading Post forums at all of the different threads and it seems more and more like I'm seeing a particular trend forming. So, it got me wondering, are you folks having some sort of contest to see who can hide your asking prices and locations better than the next poster?
I mean, I continue to see lots of threads where people never use a dollar sign and the asking price is buried within a paragraph of text. Even then it's almost coded so it's hard to tell if the number is actually a price or just a random number thrown into the midst of the text.
And then, you sneakey entrepreneurs, you either slide your location in so a person has to read the post a few times to actually catch your location - or, better yet, you throw out a region ("NE CO" or "From XXX to YYY" versus your actual location (wouldn't want someone to actually narrow down your whereabouts to an actual municipal sub-section, now would we?). Uncle Sam and his Black Helicopters might find you if you narrow it down to a 10 square mile area.
And, lastly, what's with running everything you've got to say into one bulky paragraph? Is there some reason you can't separate your comments into separate paragraphs or do you not care if it's difficult to read your posts?
Okay, I'm done now.

Good rant and I agree.
To add, I really love it when people say they are not able to post pics but they can send them to you in an email. I'm sure there are some weird computers out there, maybe, that won't allow someone to post pics. I'd be willing to bet that 99% of the time it's people not taking the time to figure it out.

Ok, while I'm not guilty of this transgression, I do have to say that some folks don't have access to post their pictures on a web site so they can link their URL's in the ad. I'm lucky enough to have access to several, but most of these boards require a linked picture, this is one of the few that I've been on that allow actual attachments. That being said, they should look a little lower on their post so they can add attachments.

Is there a way to just make a profile location mandatory? That would completely solve the location problem and then the mod(s) wouldn't have to be responsible for baby sitting every new poster with a for sale ad. Well, for the location thing, anyway.
ginse i think the problem is with people asking 100 for their stuff and then they think they want 200 but the real problem is finding the number within the post and then they just keep on typing and you really have a hard time trying to find anything because it is just one big massive run on sentence but every once in a while there is a period. i really find it amusing when they type shit out like that because i really try to lay my for sale ads out in a very clear and concise manner and always try to post pictures so everyone can see what they are getting plus pictures make any item sell better no matter what it is. having the price down at the bottom away from the main body of the text is nice so that people can see if you are asking 100 dollars and even a money symbol is nice to have so that people can at least locate the price in their mass confusion of words. I really hope my explanation solved everything and you feel better now

I don't know if it's just coincidence or related in some fashion, but I have also noticed, many of the people that don't post a clear price/location/pics, are the same people that ONLY use this forum to sell their stuff. They aren't active members, and i'm willing to bet, you could match their post count with postings in the wanted/for sale section.
There is a huge difference in postings of "active members" and "classified trolls". Active members, actually put some thought and take care in ensuring everybody gets a clear understanding of what they are selling, where they can meet, and how much they want. Whereas classified trolls, probably have the same posting on half a dozen other sites, and are just seeking as many views as possible.
I've watched the regulars and mods, be VERY patient with these folks, but patience only goes so far.

SO The more posts one has on this site, the better person they are? Ive noticed an attitude that expresses that belief. I dont post a ton. There are a few guys in here who post 40 to 50 times a day not to say anything worthy, just to get the count high enough to become acceptable.
The amount of posts matter little to me. I tend to judge people on what they have to say and how they approach others.
I can't help but wonder what the count has to be before your "acceptable" in CO-AR-15? 500? 1000? Sad.
Yeah! It's time to bash anyone who might try to sell something but not post a lot. Good thing eveyone in here gets along, acts civil to each other and all that trash.

I will say not at all. I give reminders to all. I myself do not have a large post count considering that I have been here 6-7 years. I value quality over quantity.
I have noticed that we do seem to have many new members where there 1st post is in the classified section and out of only 3-4 simple rules they are unable or unwilling to follow them.
Just some thoughts. :)

(As much as I hate using this type of testing slang..) OMG!
You have no idea!
Most of it is petty and simple to address stuff, but some things get a bit out of hand and take time to address. I'e been trying to do the kinder-gentler mod thing and give people warnings where I can, but in some cases I should have been giving folks cooling off periods from the site.
But, I love this site a lot and am glad to have the chance to help out a bit here. I just wish folks would spend a few extras minutes and think about some of the things they post (especially, as per the OP, in the Trading Post section).

Red Devil is right. I'm not making this about how long a person has been a member, or how many posts they have (while the newest members tend to be the first offenders).
Heck, while it's really nice to have, I'm not even making this about having pics in the posts. If something catches my interest as a potential buyer and there are no pics, I will ask for them. If I get a response like (you can look for these online, there are plenty of pics out there", the seller obviously doesn't want me to see what HE/SHE is selling and I'm done with the thread. If the person either doesn't know how or have the capability to post a pic of their item, I'm actually okay with that. But, without pics of their item, if we agree on a meet to buy, don't be angry if I do not like the condition of YOUR item and walk away from the trade.
I just think that its easy enough to clearly post your location.
It's easy enough to clearly post your price(s).
And it's easy enough to post in a format that is easy to read.
If you really want to sell your wares, why wouldnt you try to make it easy on those potential buyers to read through your post and get the relevant info?
Just sayin.
I have to say we should all thank the mods for how clean they keep it here. Sure no location/price/etc gets annoying but as far as spam and correcting our new members goes they keep co-ar15 in damn good shape.

I, for one, have no problem with people that never post anything outside of the classifieds because I happen to like a very full and active classifieds for when I want to buy or sell something (that and I happen to enjoy window shopping).
Running off people who just use the classifieds isn't going to make the forum in general (or the classified section) any better.
On several of the forums I frequent, posts in the classifieds section DO NOT go toward your post count, so that would be a good policy here to show who is only posting ads and who is actually contributing (then those that care about such things can use that information as they see fit).
Bigger postcounts don't mean you're a better person, just that you are more of a contributor to the community (that and you can search their posts to see if they're a schmuck).
As for some of the other complaints (poorly written ads, bad formatting, lack of price/location/photos/etc) these things mostly harm the seller so I fail to see why buyers would complain ... if you don't like the ad don't buy and the sellers that post crappy ads will either learn or give up and go away. See, the market solution wins again!
Oh and one side thing that annoys the crap out of me; "add" means to increase the quantity of something, "ad" means an advertisement (I work in publishing and it drives me nuts that even professionals mess that one up).
Reddevil, the difference between you and the classified trolls is that you actually read through the forum. Don't be offended at the fact that sellers with low post count are high offenders, that's just the way it usually works out.
The classified trolls don't care about anything but volume, and only read the classified subforums. You can tell because they piggy back onto other people's for sale threads, and immediately jump in on WTB ads with a list of what they have (that often isn't really what the person is asking for).
I've been a member of other boards where a specific template was made to sell vehicles, then, if you don't fill out the template, your thread is deleted. That's a decent idea, but it is on the line of causing a rift between the staff and the posters. Most people hop on board just fine, but you'll never, ever, capture the classified trolls because they only post to sell and will never read any instructions or rants or anything.
EDIT: I'm largely in agreement with Zund. Post bad ads and people won't read them. I also like to window shop and read a good amount of for sale ads. There are a few posters who I've seen around enough that I just don't bother with their ads for various reasons. The worst guy actually doesn't post up ads here anymore after he burned some bridges with his bad attitude and couldn't sell his wares.

i like the idea that posting in the classifides dosent count toward post count
the thing that bugs me on a lot of the forums are the noobs that just join and start asking where to buy stuff in non related threads

I guess folks are misunderstanding the meaning of my post. I never said anything about high post count, nor did I say anything negative about folks who only post in the classified section. I was merely pointing out the fact that, members who contribute to, and seem to have a greater appreciation for the forum as a whole, typically seem to follow the rules, and generate clear and thoughtful ads. That is all

One other thought ... is it possible to create a message template for new posts in a given subforum?
If that's possible with vBullitin maybe make it to where when you start a new thread in one of the classified subforums it already has formatting something like this:
Manufacturer:
Model:
Caliber:
Description:
Price and/or trade value and items wanted:

Do you know what I really like about this forum?
Freedom.
Other forums make people do this and that just to post in classifieds, and then only members can respond which does me no good if i'm surfing the River.
The rules are clear Price, Location. Pretty easy. I didn't know we were being graded on sentence structure or grammar.
For a bunch of guys that sure enjoy freedom, and talking about it, and getting mad when others infringe upon it we sure want to just make this place as uniformed as possible, don't we?
I hate AR-15.com, and jouster, and most others because of their gay ass rules. If you don't like someone's ad then don't read or buy. That would be the sellers loss, not mine or yours.
That's what I do.
A Template will just look like this
