Hello, my name is Colin and I'm new here (obviously). I've lurked around here for awhile because I don't have an AR yet, but I hope to pick one up soon. That's why I finally joined.
So here's by bio for anyone interested. I'm in college at the Colorado School of Mines, and I love shooting. I've been shooting competitively since elementary school, although I haven't had much to do with highpower shooting. I shoot primarily smallbore and trap, but I also shoot air rifle and I'm getting more into 3-gun shooting, mainly because it's so fun!
I may be only 19, but I've started my gun collecting early :D Here's what I own already:
a custom built Anschutz .22
Izshmash 7-4 .22 biathlon rifle (although I'm looking to sell it)
Avanti air rifle
Baikal air pistol
Mini-14 (given to me for christmas, I'd rather have an AR but beggars can't be choosers)
Remington STS o/u shotgun
Saiga-12 shotgun (wicked fun to shoot)
and finally, a Glock 27 that I was given for becoming an Eagle scout.
Like I said earlier, I'm hoping to buy an AR sometime in the next few months, primarily for 3-gun, but also for target shooting, and possibly a bit of varmint killing. I currently shoot a mini-14, but I don't like its sights, its magazines, or its accuracy, but other than that it's a great little gun
Anyways, here's a video of me shooting some 3-gun since it's what I'll primarily be doing with the AR once I get one.

Any suggestions on make, model, barrel length, etc for what I'll be using it for would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome.
Don't discount hte Mini-14 too much. While I agree that the stock sights aren't conducive for the most accurate shooting, they're actually very robust and reliable guns. I've had mine for 27 years (since a week before my 18th birthdfay - you do the math) and love it so long as I use Ruger magazines (never had much luck with after-market mags).
Anyway, welcome once again and if we can answer any of your questions regarding AR's, just ask away. One way or another we'll get you into an AR!

Welcome, Poof...
Looks like you were having lots of fun in the video. I agree with Ginsue on the Mini...I love 'em. I've always had really good luck with every one I've owned...and that's been a few.
I have one of the new Mini-30s now...I like it enough to say that if I could have only one long gun, that one would definitely be on the short list.

Just watched the video, looked like fun. I've never done any competition shooting but I would like to in the future.

Yeah, we're trying to get the whole shooting program off the ground right now. The last few years there wasn't much interest so we're trying to pick up the pieces now.
As for my comments on my Mini-14, I didn't mean to say I hate the Mini, far from it, I just dislike the non-compatibility of the sights and magazines. It's more of a rugged one-size-fits-all gun whereas I'm looking to have a customizable rifle.
Does anyone have a recommendation on a good "starter" AR that's not too expensive?
Welcome..

Easy enough.. And, more than enough guys to lend a hand, if you need..

Hope you guys get it up and running!
AR rifle it really depends what your willing to spend you could probably build a decent rifle for around a little under 800 give or take if you look around hard enough you might be able to find a good deal used or new for even less! you might want to re-post that question in a different section to get more members to give there input.
to answer your question we need more info! also try the search function on the board to see if others have asked similar questions which might answer what your seeking!
info needed would be like
barrel length? 16 -20 inches??
rifle length gas system? mid-length? or carbine?
fixed stock or adjustable?
A2 iron sights or a flat top?
some good companies i would start with are:
LMT
Noveske
spikes Tactical
armalite
Rock River Arms
stag arms
Del-ton- isn't bad pretty affordable to be honest from what i have seen and herd of.
DPMS, REMINGTION AND BUSHMASTER- all are the same company but would be ok for starting out I'm just not a fan!
there are many others you could chose from i currently have an armalite and Rock river arms
