View Full Version : What caliber are you shooting?

I'm shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor. Trued Remington action with a Kreiger 1-8 twist barrel.
.308. Will switch to something more interesting if this barrel ever wears out, which it seems to have no inclination to do.
22BR, 243, 308 and 338 Lapua.

300 Win Mag... Remmy Sendero
243 .. Built Savage
6.5x284 ... Built Savage
The Win Mag is close to 1000 rounds. Might have to get another barrel soon, but the accuracy hasn't decreased yet. Still hitting 1' steel gongs at 1200 meters.

roll my own .308 win
.308 Win. No plans on changing calibers soon for medium range purposes. I would like to try 7.82 Lazzeroni Warbird sometime though.
223 Rem , 260AI , 308 Win , 338 Lapua
The Lazzeroni cartridges have famously short barrel life , usually under 1K rounds when pushed to the velocities that make it worth not going to another carteidge .
Ruger flat bolt .220 Swift
Ruger M77 MKII 22.250
Rem 660 .243
Rem 600 Mohawk .222 Rem
Rem 600 Mohawk .308
Ruger M77 MKII .300 Win Mag
Custom Mauser actioned 25.06 with a Titus barrel (going up for sale today, check classifieds)
The Remington 600's and the 660 my dad bought new years ago and just gave them to me. None of them have more than 200 rounds through them....I love those Rifles. The Ruger flat bolt he bought new and just handed that one down as well. Gotta love the old man![WooHoo]

coloradoEMT,
I agree with you on the 7 RUM. All the power of the 300 RUM with the far superior ballistics of a .284 pill!

All the big magnums look great on paper - to a certain type of person - but they are not used to win matches very often. Here's the data from the 2010 Steel Safari
http://demigodllc.com/articles/steel-safari-2010/?p=3
The 6.5mm caliber totally dominated with 39% of all rifles; 6mm was next with 28%, then .30 (22%), and then 7 mm (11%). Specific cartridges: .260 Remington (25%), .308 Winchester (17%), 6.5x47 Lapua (11%), 6% for each of 6XC, 7m WSM, 7mm RSAUM, .260AI, and then 3% each for .300 WM, 6mm-250, .30-06, 6.5-284, 6 Dasher, .243 Winchester, and 6CM/243
That's a pretty strong endorsement for the mid-size 6.5's. RayDog did win the 2009 match shooting his 7 WSM. We have had matches that allowed any cartridge less than .50 BMG-- one guy shot a .338LM and everyone else shot the normal cartridges such as those above.
I most often compete with my AW in .260Rem, second after that is split between my .308 (if I have cheap ammo to burn) or my AWSM in 7mm RM, which I will be shooting this weekend at the SRM.

I was shooting 7wsm and now 7rm. .284 pills rock! I also shoot a ton of .308.
.308, .260, 6 BR, 6.5 Grendel and .338 Edge. Yeah I know, I'm a sick sick man. Can't stick with one caliber.

How's the 6BR working out for you? My brother is looking at chambering his shot out 243 in 6BR. Seems like a great round, low recoil, long barrel life, lots of good bullets to choose from. What bullets are you shooting, twist? Someone local chamber it for you?
Thanks, Kevin

.300 WM in multiple rifles. But my favorite is my 700PSS that was lightly customized.
Kevin
I've recently become a big fan of the 6BR. I took a perfectly good .308 and rebarreled it in 6BR and do not regret it at all. I own 3 now. If you want long range performance you need a fast twist barrel to handle the long bullets. I went with a 1 - 8" Kreiger and run Sierra and Nosler 107gr. match bullets. Bruce Artus did all the barrel work on my last one and I did the one before that.....with a whole lot of help from Phil Lebow.

.308 bro. It doesnt have a supercharged name or create pressures and speeds that impress anyone. just a very efficient design. Aim small, hit small.

308 here.
I like to keep everything pretty much standardized and seeing how I don't reload no point in getting extravagant.

The .260 has been my go-to long-range cartridge since 2006 because of its great ballistics, relatively long barrel life, low recoil, and relatively low cost. I've also been shooting a 7mm RM for a couple years, and it's a laser. I'm going to add a .243 to the stable shooting the DTACs pretty soon.
