Bushmaster closing Windham plant (http://www.pressherald.com/news/bushmaster-closing-windham-plant_2010-12-11.html)

The firearms maker, which is based in Windham and employs 73, will shut down next March.

Four years after being acquired by a private equity firm, Bushmaster Firearms International plans to close its manufacturing plant in Windham, effective March 31.

The firearms manufacturer, which was founded in 1973 and is based in Windham, employs 73 workers in Maine.

A media release from Madison, N.C.-based Freedom Group Inc., Bushmaster's parent company, said the Windham plant's staff will be given "comprehensive severance packages" and assistance in finding new jobs.
Freedom Group will retain the Bushmaster brand but move the manufacturing of products now made in Windham to other facilities. Freedom Group owns other firearms manufacturers, including Remington Arms Co., Dakota Arms Cos., Parker Gunmakers, H&R 1871 and Marlin Firearms.

Members of Maine's congressional delegation called the closure a blow to the Windham community.

"The workers of that company have earned an international reputation for the quality of their work ... It's very disappointing to see them cut out of the respected brand they have worked so hard to build," said Rep. Chellie Pingree in a prepared statement.

A statement from the offices of Sens. Olympia Snowe (http://www.pressherald.com/search?searchterm=%22Olympia+Snowe%22) and Susan Collins (http://www.pressherald.com/search?searchterm=%22Susan+Collins%22) said Bushmaster "has provided good jobs to workers in the Windham area, and the facility's closure will be a great economic loss to southern Maine."

Bushmaster makes short-barreled and long-barreled rifles, including the M16 military rifle and the related AR15. Those models are used by law enforcement agencies, private security firms and the militaries of 50 countries.

Bushmaster guns are made from aluminum and advanced carbon fiber and are used for hunting, recreational and competition shooting and home defense, according to the company's website.

Bushmaster made news in August, when R.J. Grondin & Sons proposed building an enclosed firing range at its quarry in Windham for weapons testing by Bushmaster. The proposal followed months of complaints by residents about noise from high-power weapons testing at the quarry.
Bushmaster was acquired in April 2006 by the New York City-based private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management, which also acquired Remington, DPMS and Marlin from 2006 to 2008.

All were placed under the ownership of Freedom Group, a company owned by Cerberus.

In a 2009 filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said the acquisitions were intended to create "the world's leading firearms and ammunition company."

Hmm. Interesting. Seems to me that Freedom Group (Bushmasters parent company) is closing down and pulling out of New England completely.

You may recall the announcement last March 26th of Freedom Group closing down North Haven, Connecticut Marlin plant as well.

Curious.

Not that I'm a huge Bushmaster fan, but I hate to see a successful manufacturer shuttered for any reason.

We all know that the Chinese version isn't better, but little kids in factories can produce them at alarming rates for a fraction of the cost

My guess is "Freedom Group" is owned by some liberal lefty organization and is going to shut down US manufacturing slowly. Cerebus Holdings will follow suite.

They were founded in 1816 and own Remington, DPMS and now Bushy. They also own the following companies:

Marlin
H & R Firearms
NEF
Dakota Arms
LC Smith
Parker
AAC
Barnes Bullets
EOTAC
INTC

I don't think they are a lefty organization, just sayin.

I wonder if they would have stayed if not for the complaints about the new firing range?

Im not sure why companies sell themselfs off to larger groups unless they are not able to make things work in the first place.
To bad for all those people that worked there, im sure that they will have no problem finding jobs elsewhere in town making AR's. (sarcasm if you could not tell)

It very well may be related to the PITA of doing business in that area (anti-gun). The anti-gunners don't give a hoot about how many jobs are lost, they just care about getting rid of the evil guns and dealing w/that attitude wears on a person.

We've had several, even a few fascist presidents. BO is just the next in line.

Guys, they've been making firearms for almost 200 years! They aren't some conspiracy organization trying to shut down gun manufacturing. This would be like Colt or S&W or Springfield all the sudden telling the world they are done making guns and are now the biggest financier of the Brady Campaign. Sure, stranger things have happened but let's be honest here, this isn't one of those times. Loosen up the tin-foil hats.

Of course if I could, I would try to monopolize the firearms market and make a huge profit. You would have to buy my guns. I am not sure what the actual strategy here is. I bet it is similar to Walmart and its ability to shut down small businesses by using huge economic clout. As Henry Ford used to say, "you can have a Model T any color you want, as long as it is black".
You can buy any gun you want as long as it was made by Cerberus. The list is:

Remington Arms (http://www.co-ar15.com/wiki/Remington_Arms)
Bushmaster Firearms International (http://www.co-ar15.com/wiki/Bushmaster_Firearms_International)
DPMS Panther Arms (http://www.co-ar15.com/wiki/DPMS_Panther_Arms)
Marlin (http://www.co-ar15.com/wiki/Marlin_Firearms)
H & R Firearms (http://www.co-ar15.com/wiki/H_%26_R_Firearms)
NEF
Dakota Arms
LC Smith
Parker
AAC
Barnes Bullets
EOTAC
INTC

Bushmaster isn't going away. They are just closing their Maine manufacturing facility. They still have their headquarters there as far as I know. Considering how anti-gun that part of the country is and the fact that Maine isn't exactly a business friendly environment, this isn't that surprising. Bushmaster still has a plant in AZ. They also have an R&D facility in GA. This is just business, nothing more.

Too bad we don't have a state gov/legislature that would be willing to lobby Bushmaster/Cerberus/Freedom Group to bring those manufacturing jobs to Colorado.

I wonder what the employee discount is?

Strictly business thinking, not anything else ;)

If Bushmaster thinks what is gonna happen in a few years instead of what happens tomorrow, they are definitely moving part of their operations out of the US.
Right now for example Colt, DPMS, Sabre and some others are making rifles and/or parts outside of US. By doing this, they can legally avoid US senseless, time consuming and expensive export regulations = sell their products to other markets outside of US competitively. Things were different years back.
