Hey guys just got done a while ago refinishing a romy stock palm swell and upper hg and I decided to try to stain it russian red. Well I wasn't quite sure about what wood stain to use and didn't feel like trying to mix rit dye so I decided to try staining my set with iodine as I've read many places that that's just what the russians did. I already had them sanded down to 400 grit so they were nice and smooth and a perfect canvas for staining. I have to tell you they turned out so so so nice! I just put one coat of spray on shellac so more coats of that will only make them nicer but I have to tell you the grain just pops out as the light hits it in different ways looks exactly like a soviet furniture set. Sorry I didn't post any pictures as I'm a little technology challelenged when it comes to that kinda thing, when I get a chance I'll have my wife help me.

i use light wood stain mixed with some red food coloring. came out real nice on my MAK-90. the buyer even commented on how nice a gun it was. Next wood redo gets the flat black bomb cam treatment.
you get me a bbl yet to turn the GM blank down???

I've been tempted by the Apex sale... but have to stay focused on my .223 build!
Bed liner on a stock set? it would be durable, but ugly- but not more so than polymer sets on an AK, IMHO.

I saw that, it would be nice to use a saiga 5.56 bolt and an east german 74 bolt carrier and all the eg 74 parts that are availible at various places to make a 5.56 eg 74 (I'm not a fan of the true weiger handguards so eg bakelit for me) so dbeal, are you going to build that east german 74 clone like tou were thinking about? I've sourced all kinds of eg 74 parts or akm parts that would resemble eg parts ;) I'm currently working on a build that's somewhat based on an mpi-aks-74nk (shorty eg 74) what do I have to do to trade that german bolt from you? Or will I just need to buy one lol. Anyway if you are gonna do the clone then if needed I can tell you where to find some hard to find parts if needed ;)

Very cool my work is in the livestock nutrition industry so I got some manganese from our production plant ;) gonna try making my own park solution. But I've always loved working with wood so I love refinishing my stocks. Refinished my deer rifle (yugo m48 mauser) to a very very smooth finish and rubbed boiled linseed oil into the teak wood stock. So your work is refinishing wood or building ak's? Lol you have a good source for soviet stock sets?

There is nothing like Russian AK wood... it's the best (I've had a few different sets). Here's a AK-74 set that I found over on theakforum.net. I had it on a Saiga SGL-21.
Actually... it was pieced together from two different sets. The handguards were one matching set and they were so beautiful that I found a 74 buttstock (it was a honey-brown color) and had a forum-member over there re-finish it to match. If you want to contact him, his username on theakforum.net is Z_recto. He is the go-to guy in the AK world for re-finishing stock sets to get the Russian red finish.

will the saiga 5.56 bolt work with the 74 carrier? Luny has the E German gas block, etc now ( as well as other bulgarian 74 parts)..traded it to him for the romy g kit. I have one 74 kit that I would like to build as a 5.56..if the Saiga bolt would work I'd buy one..

I am just a Biomedical Engineer. Have built a few toys though. I also have a soft spot for restoring cars and Tube amplifiers.

I'm already working on luny to trade for that eg gas block ;) it would be perfect for my 7.62x39 mpi-akm-k (shorty) clone I'm collecting parts for.
Ah I have a soft spot for tube amplifiers as well, I've played bass guitar for 20 years now and I can play a little guitar as well currently using soviet military radio tubes in place of 12ax7's in my bass amp, has a nice sound ;) I also have a soft spot for classic cars too still have my first car, a 67 mustang that started like with a 200 inline 6 then I did a full v8 conversion to 289 now it has a rip snortin' roller cam 351 with all kinds of goodies, ironicly my car got me into gun building as guns (mainly aks) are cheaper to work on than my car lol

just saw this holiday special on virgin Weiger barrels:
http://www.apexgunparts.com/product_info.php/cPath/57/products_id/1760
I was starting to contemplating doing a 5.45 build instead- then this popped up- good price for a chrome-lined .223 AK barrel!

Didn't see this post till now but yeah 100 bucks is pretty good for that german .223 barrel or if you hadn't already ordered it you coulda gone with a galil .223 barrel and turned the threads down and done a polish beryl clone ;) galil barrel is 18 inches like the beryl.

If I do anything longer than 16" on an AK, it'll be a bull barrel experiment... use something like a Remington 700 barrel turned down to fit the trunnion, but with a custom gas block, no front sight (optics only)
maybe an RSB off a Yugo RPK- but with a rail welded to it rather than a sight leaf.

Why don't you get a 1 inch diameter 21 inch blank or so turn down the whole barrel to .950 with the rear sight journal .960 and ofcourse the chamber area to fit maybe a yugo trunnion with a 74 bullet guide (you'd need the yugo trunnion to fit the rear sight block) also an m70 rear trunnion with the recoild spring and top cover locking pin as well as the thick milled top cover and attach the rail to that ;) also maybe a cantilevered piece of steel under the barrel welded to the receiver for a bipod mount that when folded doubles as a handgaurd ;) heck might as well do a vz58 gas piston or even sks. Giving you ideas now? Might as well do that build in 6.5 ar turbo (call it 6.5 ak turbo though hehe)
