So I went and tried this IPSC/USPSA thing out in Weld County yesterday. I had viewed a match last month, but this was the first time I got to play too. WHat a fantasic time!!! Being a complete newbie, there were a number of guys that really looked after me. ABS & Hooter had nothing but encouragement and easy tips. They kept improvent info simple enough to digest as there was a lot to learn.

If you "think" you might like it, go a head and watch a match then enter. Seeing it on YouTube doesn't do it justice. I had a lot of questions answered just by hanging out the first time. I can't wait to do it again.

Shitake, I'll have to buy a reloader now....

It will gonna be even lot more fun when you get really "in" to our sport and figure out what all things you can really do :)

I think WCFW match was very nice - easy enough for beginning shooters with decent basic pistol skills, but at the same time some stages were pretty hard if you wanted to go fast.

@ Hannu - I believe I saw you on top of the results. WOW. I can not wait for the next time. I will not be able to make matches every weekend, but will try to do 2 a month.

I will look for you at the next match to introduce myself.

@ CHA-LEE - Thanks! I could not belive the level of marksmanship. I have soooo much to learn, but I had a huge amount of fun. My goal was to not get DQ'd and have a good time. I did both. Next time it will be not to get 2 non-engagements... OUCH! those freaking hurt scores.... I am trainable.

Would anyone care to share some drills and/or books for a beginner level? Is there a good instructor that is with the USPSA locally? (Ft. Collins area)

Thanks again guys, I am still grinning from yesterday. I just got my Blade-Tech holster and brass bag in the mail today, so I won't be using the coffee can much.... lol

Two Shoes> If you are looking for some good USPSA style shooting from a guy based up north in the Ft. Collins area then you should contact Jerry Westcott. He was the match director for Sunday's match and is a really good trainer as well. I will PM you his contact info. He will be able to provide you some practice drills, book recommendations, and what not as well.

Great to have new shooters -- welcome to a great pistol sport.

We should also mention that there is all sorts of IPSC/USPSA info on the definitive website, Brian Enos's forum. There's a section of threads for new shooters. And, many drills, tips, etc. In fact there's so much there, maybe it would be overwhelming to someone getting started. Still, take a look.
Of course, if you get linked up with Jerry he'll be able to cut to the chase on where to focus.
My tip: dry fire.

@ - Hannu, It was a pleasure meeting you yesterday.
@ - CHA-LEE Congrats as well!

I had a great time. I had some difficulties on stages 3 & 5... I ran out of ammo on 5 with the steel from the left side port :o [Bang] 1.5 mags was not enough left for me to drop them. Someone (maybe the RO) let me know most of my shots were left of target... Made sense as I aimed for one on the right and hit the one on the left with the steel in front of me. [Tooth] I'll look at the Brian Eno site for some training drills...

My best stage was 1. I was on top of the world after that stage. I didn't get through it fast or score lights out, but I did make each of my mag chages and shot it the way I had planned in my head. Before I shot the stage, one of the guys gave me some encouragement, it made a HUGE diference in my head.

I even shot my own reloads and it dropped the steel (when I hit the steel) without a problem! So the match from my perspective was awesome. A little sad my squad didn't get to shoot stage 2, but shitake happens. Admittedly we/squad were a little slow as we had a number of us "newbies" in the mix but all-in-all a great time.

OK, we'll forget for a minute that I screwed up and locked my keys in my truck,[Bang] but beyond that, the wind was REALLY beating everybody up. Even us over sized people were getting pushed around. Still enjoyed the time with other shooters, just NOT THE WIND!!!! Sasha, thanks for the loan of your cellphone (yep, mine was locked up in the truck along with the keys). After John and Co. gave me a lift home (HUGE thanks there!), I finally got back up to the WCFW and unlocked the truck about 730PM. Made for a long day.

If I wanted to deal with sandstorms I would have stayed in the middle-east.
Damned Ruger Sand-Jammed in stage 4 and I had 4 FTE! [Mad]

I have heard this from a few people that shot both matches. I can't imagine how much worse the CRC match could have been because the Weld sandstorm was a doozie!!

Next time you get up north here, let me know, I'll introduce myself. What squad were you on? I was on 5.

Stage 4 would not stand up to the brutal wind, I don't think we got anyone through it. Cut some speed holes in the hard cover targets, buteven with them staked and a cinder block, would not stay up. I am still pulling sand/dirt out of my ears... amongst other places.

I trade you that for a Stage zero because of a broken firing pin[ROFL2]

You guys make my busted classifier look like I had no problems [ROFL2]
First time I felt that I could not keep the gun pointed to A-zone just because of wind - waaay too many points down on Classifier stage :(

Need to take ski goggles to next match :)

I was in squad 4.

I think Byte Stryke was the only one that had the foresight to bring his goggles to yesterday's match.
He could have sold those for $1,000 and many of us would have gladly payed his price! [ROFL2]

This was only my 3rd event. In a short time I have gone from a "pretty good shot" with the guys I hang around to "dayum I suck" next to last. I felt pretty good, ok really good, when the results came out. Almost middle of the Production class.

I got called to lead off Stage 1, I was so nervous, but had a plan and stuck to it. My best stage of the day!

I can see where this type of competition could bruise an ego. I am ready to start to learn how to shoot, not plink.

Humbling, isn't it? Many of us have had the same feeling.

It is a long trip to the cusp but it is fun ride too. Welcome to the addiction!! [Muaha]

If it was easy, girls could do it...

Actually, you touched on exactly why a lot more people dont shoot these types of matches. The ego is a delicate thing. The other reason is that to train to get better is expensive.

For sure!
Admittedly my ego was a little hurt, but not to a point where I wouldn't come back, it is more motivating than anything else.

As far as expense, ya! But I figure dry firing is free, and I just started to reload so costs can be managed some.
I just need to resolve my ignorance now, I need to know what I don't know. This isn't management double speak, I need to find out what training to start with, a path to follow, a route. Not necessarily to a destination or classification, but a journey of improvement.

So far I am learning to use the front sight. I know that sounds pretty basic, but I am starting from nothing. I would line things up in the sights and then focus on the target. The only way I cleared the Texas star this event was with the front sight. Last time out I had emptied 2 mags on some steel targets and still didn't knock 'em down as I ran out of ammo. :o

There are a number of books out there that I am looking to get one to start with. I hear Brian Enzo's is great, but not written with the beginner in mind, sort of a next step.

I can't say enough about the people I have met. Very helpful and fun to be around. I just need to get out more than once a month.

Only once?

So what is a good goal for this year?

Solid C class performance on a limited budget and time to put in?
Strategies? Points vs. clock? (Accuracy over time)...
For now it is hit the cardboard colored targets, not the white ones... [Flower]
I didn't have any FTEs, but a lot of wounded no-shoots, 5 I think... Doh!

You have to see your front sight and hit your desired targets before you start worrying about movement. Accuracy at a subconsious level, not thinking abouit trigger press and sight picture and shooting form, then you can start working on your movement to shave time.

]For all of you that are not able to attend the MHS this weekend, I want to test the waters and see if there would be enough interest to warrant throwing together a match. It would go something like this: Set up 2-3 stages plus a classifier and shoot the two stages 2or 3 times. It would be regular scoring and entry fee would be just enough to cover cost of targets and tape and classifier fee. This would be a great place to play in a division you normally don't compete in.

Hit me with "yes" if you think this might be a good time. I will make the call on whether or not it's a go on Thurs nite.

Send Abs an email if you want to go up to Weld and catch a match.
