For those of you who like to do some interesting fun thngs every now and then when you go out, I have to recommend explosive targets. I got the chance to shoot some of these today at 150 yards, I still have a smile on my face. It is a compound or mixture or whatever called tannerite. You can go to tannerite.com and check out the already made targets. It was a suprise that no law enforcement peeps came out to see what the hell was going on. Man, was it fun though! I wish I would have brought my camera but my friend didn't tell me that we were going to be doing anything out of the ordinary.

Stuart, if you read this thread, could you go to the website tannerite.com and post the first youtube video that is on the home page of the site for me? Please kind sir? I can't figure out how to do it. [Tooth] Or someone else, you know, either way. Just wanted the video to be easy to be seen.

BigBear (http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/member.php?u=2820) has been talking about exploding target stuff (I think it was the tannerite) for some time and has offered a few times to share a little with folks. So many times I've wanted to join him and check it out.

Sounds like fun stuff. One of these days....

I do, I have 1lb and .5lb targets.... When I head out to the range, I usually put up a little blurb on here. I'd love for people to come on out and blow my stuff up. I never use all of it. Take care.

Tannerite is addicting... going back to paper punching just isn't as much fun. I'd really like to go out into BLM land so I can use a 10lb or so at 500+ yards... that would be a HUGE boom...

Yet they won't let me shoot my BP pistol there because of "fire hazard". Hypocrites.[Rant2]

Lol, will do. Need to find an old 10gallon gas can somewhere. Should be big enough. Probably won't happen till April or so though.

Apparently there is no fire hazard with tannerite.

I'd pick up some if I had a rifle.

I've seen tannerite demo'd but never did it myself until today. I was out at the south site today. It is getting crapped out I have a truck full of carboard boxes and plastic bottles. This was from a place fairly far in.

I wasted too much time with handguns before going to the tannerite. I put the 1/2 pound jar about 150 yards out. I was using a Mosin Nagant 91/30 sniper. It had been zeroed years ago but wasn't anymore. At first the sun was in my eyes and I couldn't see the target then it went down and it got cold. Finally, I used the iron sights and got a fun boom. That is serious stuff.

I'm definitely doing more when it warms up. Group buy? Co-ar15 tannerite shoot?

Just got home from Wyoming (was there for the holidays). Buddy of mine has loads of this stuff. He showed me a video of himself shooting a TV that was stuffed with 2 pounds. It looked fun to say the least. Unfortunately with everyone being busy with their families, I didn't get the opportunity to go blow some up on my friend's land.

BigBear
12-29-2010, 09:28
It is a lot of fun!! Just please be careful of shrapnel and the such if you are packing it into other things (metal coffee cans, TVs as mentioned, etc)... And use some common sense: Don't try shooting a pound, 10 feet in front of you as I had a friend mention to "feel the boom"... cause you'll be feeling a lot more than a boom. There is no fire hazard from Tannerite itself as the chemicals create a water vapor explosion (hence the big white cloud and boom). HOWEVER, depending on what you are packing with, it could be possible to catch stuff on fire from materials/sparks/etc of the packing, so again: Be careful.

Not to be a kill joy, but you can have a lot of fun with standard plastic bottles and stuff. Less to clean up that way as well. Sorry for ranting, a friend was like, "I have an old fridge, and desk, and..." I am not hauling that crap out there, blowin' it up, and then picking up all those pieces. K.I.S.S.

If anyone would like to go out and try it, I'll try to get a date set in late Janurary depending on weather/work schedule/etc. I still have several pounds left over.

Neg, .22lr does not have enough velocity to set off the reaction needed for the Tannerite. Small caliber/rimfire or slow moving pistol calibers will not set it off. Better to stick with .223/5.56 and higher.

Me too, if I can make it....That was a joke, right?[ROFL1]

Yay, that's be fun Trouble. As far as Stu's comment... not sure. He can always use mine, not the best rifle, but it'll "git 'er dun".

Put it under your pillow, maybe the rifle fairy will trade it out for a bigger one! Just make sure to tell your wife about the rifle fairy you know, since everyone knows the mothers are always the tooth fairy's. Play her like my kids play my wife "but mommy, why does the tooth fairy only give me quaters, I wish one day she would give me a dollar or something, these things hurt when you pull them out..." low and behold, the next morning, a dollar! Just try it for shits and giggles. [ROFL1]

I'll get one when I can. I already don't get out to shoot my other guns enough as it is. No sense in breaking the bank for a rifle that I'll also never shoot.

Spyder, I did once have someone tell me almost the same thing on an NFA board when everyone found out that I still don't have a suppressor either.

Heck, I enjoy just shooting iron plates. Just hearing the "clang" is good, especially since you don't have to go put up new ones when you get tired of counting holes. But exploding stuff is better. I once had the opportunity to shoot some reactive targets AND demil some old fire extinguishers at the same time...fun and saved us taxpayers some money.

Stu, if you're not working AND I can make it whatever day Bear decides to do this you're welcome to ride down with me. I'll even throw an extra rifle in the truck for you to shoot.

I've done extensive research into it (years ago).

Tannerite claims it is legal in all fifty states if you mix it on location. It is not. In colorado, Binary explosives are illegal. I really poured through statues to verify their claims, so I'm not parroting. I've read it myself, I don't really want to try to find it again right now. Our statues were written with liquid explosives in mind, but as they are written, they would apply to tannerite. Now, it being technically illegal in CO doesn't mean you will get arrested or prosecuted for it. With as widespread as it is you are probably ok.

Tannerite is basically an ammonium nitrate + aluminum blend, with small amounts of (I forget what it is, zinc based I think) to encourage more flash although it isn't a critical component. The energy of the projectile hitting it does not matter quite as much as the shape. You need something similar to a boat-tail to drive the particles together the right way to get it to detonate. There are some custom mixes for rimfire and what not that are a little easier to set off. It is possible to make it yourself, no, I will not tell you how. Properly mixed it should have a detonation velocity of around 7,000 FPS if memory serves. That is a lot less than things like C4, but it still classes it as a high explosive. If you're an idiot, it can hurt you, but I'm sure you know that already.

Oh lastly, it's not an exp. that works well "en mass". If you put say twenty pounds of it together you're going to be disappointed, because its not going to be even close to 4x as large of an explosion compared to a single pound. Not sure what the optimal weight is, probably depends on what exact round you are throwing at it. It isn't much though.

Better safe than sorry
I am going to have to cancel

Takin' all the fun out of this man. I've never had a problem with anyone including local PD here, in TX, or in TN when firing this stuff off and that HAS been with PD and other alphabets present. I do disagree with your last paragraph though. A 5lb mix IS a lot bigger/louder than 1lb mixed. Maybe not mathematically 5 times bigger or whatever, but it definitely is a bigger boom and more cloud.

Found it:

Source: Explosive Regulations from the Colorado Division of Oil and Public Safety

And here is your problem: http://www.tannerite.com/binary-exploding-target-patent/...

Still a party pooper! I'll keep playing with it. [Beer]

...
Short version is that at the Federal level that are restrictions on the civilian detonation of materials in excess of 4oz. This means that those 1/2 pounders that you're popping off could be construed as violations of current BATFE regulations. I can't quote chapter and verse, but I'll see if I can contact the EOD gents that were discussing this to get further details.

Anyother partypoopers out there?! BOOOO.

I recently contacted CDLE OPS Explosive Division and I was told Tannerite and the like did not require a permit for personal use. Maybe that has changed.

Tannerite does not, other explosives yes.

Someone did mention it (Foxtrot I think) but it is possible to make it yourself at home... however, doing that is dangerous if you don't know what you're doing and it can be illegal depending on the way you procur and mix your chemicals... Anyways, y'all have fun - I'm still gonna use 'em and have some fun. Peace!
