View Full Version : local sheriff/CLEO of NFA question
i live off of havana and iliff and im looking to contact the right people to ask if they will sign off on sbr's. the address is really confusing, it says denver, but for driver's licenses i have to go to arapahoe. im like right on the border. anyone know who i need to contact in this area? arapahoe county? denver county? someone else?
if anyone knows the specific agency i need to speak with it would be much appreciated.

You're in Arapahoe. And as far as I've heard, Arapahoe's sheriff will not sign off. You'll need to do a trust.
You are where your PO is typically. Im kind of in Thornton/Brighton limbo myself but either way that makes me Adams.

Who do pay taxes/car registration fees to? That's usually the best way to tell.

I have heard many people say a trust is a much better way to go anyway. You can more people than yourself on the trust and in the event something bad happens to you it's not a paperwork nightmare for your family, if they are also on the trust.
Out of curiosity, does the Adams Sheriff sign off on SBR's?

He does not.
I don't think anyone does, which pisses me off. Who are they to choose that for you when the crappy ATF says you can?
Get a trust just to tell them to F Off!

I heard the Jeffco sheriff does. But I'm not sure.

Another member I know in Larimer said he got the cleo to sign but I'm not sure that's where he lived at the time of the purchase. He also said he should have done a trust to begin with.
doesn't a trust typically cost between $400 and $600 by the time you get the lawyer paid?
He does not.
I bet he does for his deputies and friends.

I'd be willing to bet John Cooke with Weld would sign off, but that doesn't help me out considering i'm in Douglas, would be interesting to find out for sure tho. I wonder how Weaver feels about it, I may have to call and find out, I know he's pro 2A.

correct if you can find one that will do it that cheap from looking around it its more like 600-1000. i have heard of 400 dollar trust, but haven't seen a lawyer charge that low of an amount. if you find one do tell!
You can set up your own trust using Quicken Will Maker for the price of the program.

FYI - There are similar posts in the NFA sub-forum on this site. You may find more info there.
Good luck with the Arapahoe Sheriff, he seems hit or miss; not consistent to say the least. When I asked him about signing off on a suppressor, he wanted to make sure it wasn't for a handgun.

i was under the impression this is a huge pain in the ass and can lead to you getting in real trouble if a mistake is made.
as far as there being threads in the sub forum, thats true, but i was just looking for information on the LEO to contact and figured id get a faster response here. i wasn't expecting it to derail into other ideas on the topic. it can be locked if need be from here on out, i just needed to know who to contact.
im guessing its grayson robinson then? arapahoe county sheriff?

You know he's a cop right?

Yep. Doesn't change the statement.
I was just messing with him though, he's right. The law is the law, no need to stand in front of it.

I bet he does not, I know two different cops that wanted SBR's and the sheriff would not sign off on them.

Weaver for sure says no, the two LEO's I just referred to are in Douglas

Just want to point out that I know you were joking Stuart.
Oneguy, I have to agree that the majority of the time LEO bashing is commonplace on this site. But Stuart is a teaser.
I just hope that I can be a help for all those that are not LEO's to help understand what is going on in the LE world and understand that there may be some bad LEO's out there but the majority are actually good people.
Now that this thing is way off line....

im not sure why you are laughing, lots of people do it. look around. but like i said, i heard you can get in big time trouble fairly easily, even if the atf accepts it at first, which is why i won't go that route. basically if my CLEO says no, im SOL

That's a defeatist sort of attitude.
Yeah, what is $600 in attorney fees when you have $5,000 in guns and who knows how much more in ammo? Plus, a Revocable Living Trust is, well, revocable. Couldn't you set up for the cheap and have an attorney go through it later?

I am not exactly sure what PD or SO has to do to have use of SBR's or automatics, I imagine some sort of trust or LLC through the county or and notification to the ATF, however I do know that the officers that are assigned those weapons from the PD don't have to have anything. They are issued those guns and can legally have them while assigned to the pd they are working for.
When it comes to the government operations I know even less about what is required of them, sorry.

can you pm me info on that? what ive read online made it look like more a pain in the ass than anything.

just the truth. i don't have much money being a grad student, i can afford an sbr upper with money collected from christmas, but can't afford $600 or more for a lawyer. there really aren't many other options

As a govt. entity, a PD or SO can legally "own" SBR's and auto's and can be assigned to individual officers for use while they are employed. It must remain in the ownership of the government entity, however.
I currently have assigned to me a federal-recycle-to-the-state Colt M16A1 with the pencil barrel. Full atuo. In really good shape and condition for its age, so I figure it was in storage somewhere for a long period of time until the feds wanted to get rid of it. I know there are a number of municipal and county agencies who have gotten these types of rifles from the fed lend-lease program.

the cops that the sheriff denied are were probably not his deputies or friends~
I have a harsh viewpoint on constitutional rights.
any uniformed or elected member of the government that refuses a law abiding citizen gun ownership "just because" or "on principle" should die in a fire.

Well I do see your point about not being "Friends" however Douglas County is a much smaller agency than say DPD so knowing everyone is a real posibility.
I am a lot less severe I have to say, fire is just mean. I am usually a "Well-wisher" though.

All you have to do is go to the state website under Business and register a new LLC. Mine took less than 10 minutes.
Has anyone considered the Legal Zoom Option for a trust?
http://www.legalzoom.com/living-trusts/living-trusts-pricing.html
Weld and Larimer counties will sign off on an SBR. Sheriff Cooke is a good guy when it comes to 2nd Amendment rights. Larimer may be a little harder, what with all the liberals in gov't and such. It's like a second Boulder.

What kind of business is it you are setting up so you can get an SBR? Sorry I'm new haven't heard of this.

The National Firearms Act Defies "Person" as "A partnership, company, association, trust, estate, or corporation, as well as a natural person." 27 CFR 479.11
That means any of those entities can own a NFA item. The NFA item doesn't have to be a necessary part of a business. Sam's' Pizza LLC can own a NFA item.
It's been discussed on other threads on this forum.

thanks for the definition. really appreciate it. So basically you can set up an LLC and have SBR transferred to the LLC and eliminate a pile of BS with the sign offs and other stuff. Just get the form 1 from BATF and your in business (pun intended)

Yes, that's it. As I said there are a bunch of other threads on this board that discuss the advantages of various entities and how to do it.
Now for my Standard Advice if your interested in NFA stuff. Down load the ATF's "National Firearms Act Handbook" (ATF P 5320.8 (http://www.atf.gov/publications/firearms/nfa-handbook/)) at -
http://www.atf.gov/publications/firearms/nfa-handbook/
You can also get other ATF publications including the forms needed for NFA stuff at- http://www.atf.gov/publications/firearms/
Have Fun.
