Just wanted to share a couple pictures with you guys. My pitbull Brutus is the coolest dog ever. I've encountered FEW dogs that are as well behaved as him, regardless of breed. His behavior further improved when I saved his ass from drowning in a frozen lake. :D

What kind of dog to you all have? Any cool stories to share about them?

Have a boxer... BIG boxer.. about 2 inches taller and about 40lbs heavier than breed standard....wonderful, laid back dog... Wonderful growl/bark when I tell him... trained as an attack dog, but had the wrong temperment... still packs a mean aggressive streak if I let him. Believe it or not, wonderful with my family/friends/ and babies/kids.

Grrr.. can't seem to load pic for some reason...

Great looking dog man. My buddy had a pitbull that was one of the nicest dogs I've known.

My dog's name is Spencer. She (yes she . . my X named her) is a husky shepard mix and was the runt of the litter. She was also the only pup in the litter that didn't look like your traditional Husky. She's currently 14.5'ish years old and is doing pretty darn good for her age. It's amazing to think back what this dog has been through with me. She has been "my rock" during a few different challenging times in life.

Quick story . . . As you can see in the pic her nose has some lighter colored pigmentation going on. I lived with a couple of my friends at their dad's house. The dad, Alan, used to come over and take care of the pool and what not. One day he was dumping a bunch of chorine in the pool. Spence came up and started biting at the stream of chlorine just like she would do to the water stream from a hose. After getting a couple tastes of the checmical she retreated to under my bed. I guess he couldn't get her to come out. He called my buddy John and says "I think I killed Steve's dog.". John goes over and finally gets Spence to come out and drink some water. Alan was relieved but then got all worried because he though he bleached my dog's nose. He was all nervous to tell me. It probably doesn't sound like that great of a story but it was funny as hell. I still give that old man a hard time about it when I see him every few years.

I always thought greyhounds were a funny looking breed but he's a good looking dog. Mixed breeds are the best dogs I've ever owned; have/had family and friends with AKC's and the majority of them were either dumber than a box of rocks or had health issues.

Agreed, good looking dog Trouble.

I think a lot of that is because so many purebred's come from puppy mills where they are inbred or the mother's are just bred to death.

I've had people mistake him for a greyhound if they only see him from behind...that only lasts until he turns around. He looks like the top front of a pit leaned out and grafted on to the back of a greyhound. He's strong as a pit, and fast as a greyhound. I got to watch him several years ago go after someone in my backyard who shouldn't have been there; my shepherd mix (TJ) was first out the door and Bruno passed him mid-yard and was a length ahead by the time he reached the back fence, which the young man had just made it over ahead of Bruno. But if he knows that we've allowed you in, he's your best friend. My boy's new chocolate lab is a good dog, but about as much a guard dog as my slippers. My daughter's Bichon is actually a dang good guard dog, just not much in the way of backing up the bark (unless you're a rabbit...)

Stella was my best buddy for 10 years. We adopted her in Dec 2000. Old age and kidney failure finally claimed her on Dec 23. I was...and still am...heartbroken she's gone.

She was a fixture in my gun store in Bailey for 8 years so a few of you may have known her. Doggie heaven is a much better place now that she's there.

I miss you, Stella.

The photo was taken at home in Aug 2010 after an IV fluid treatment at the vet's office.

We actually have 4 dogs now that my fiance and I live together. She has 3. They are rat terrier/american eskimo mix (Larry), scottie/schnauzer mix (Puck), border terrier (Nives) and pitbull (Brutus). Brutus is SO gentle with the others. They bite on him all day long, pulling at his lips and face. If they bite too hard and he's had enough, he'll growl and pin em to the ground with one paw.

I've got an oversized red Dobermann. 4" above breed standard and 50 lbs heavier. He is the best dog I've ever owned. He was real easy to train and has remembered all of his training. Good with our grandaughter and friendly. My house insurance company canceled my policy because he's a Dobie. Took a bit of time but I found another insurance company that didn't care. Choc my Dobie is like a piece of velcro. Every where I go he goes. Inever have to worry about going to the bathroom alone![ROFL1]

My house insurance company canceled my policy because he's a Dobie.

Isn't that funny? I told my insurance (and the apartment manager) that my dog was more well behaved than half the ADULTS living here, lol. Needless to say, she spent about 10 minutes with them and fell in love. Now everytime I go to the front office, they all want em to bring Buddy with me. Ha.

I have a fantastic picture of Buddy asleep holding his stuffed bear and tucked under his blankets... but I can't seem to load it.

It's amazing how our animals can be such an integral part of the family, and how much personality they have. Brutus chased some geese out onto a frozen lake and fell through the ice last year. What could I do, sit and watch my dog drown or freeze to death? No way. I went out and got him, nearly fell through myself. I was halfway under water and Brutus was my full arm's length below the surface. I pulled him halfway up onto the ice, got myself back on "solid" ice and pulled him the rest of the way up. We both walked back together to the sand. It was a pretty big lake.

@Bailey: I know exactly how you feel, and I'll be miserable when Brutus goes. My fiance is going to feel the same way when our oldest dog, Puck, dies. I love him too, but he's only been a part of my family for 7 months.

Here's our latest addition (I already posted our other guys in a previous thread). My wife rescued him - he had been abandoned and was almost starved to death along the bike path near the river. Folks had seen him for wandering for around a month. He stayed at the vet for a week to get back on his feet. We tried, but could not locate his owner. He's even micro-chipped (so we know his name is Shadow, and he's 13), but his owner has vanished.

Any ideas what he is? The vets think he's a wolf hybrid. He doesn't shed (it's like hair - not fur). He's awfully sweet, especially considering what he's been through. He'll be comfortable for as long as he's with us.

Here he is with some of his coat grown back:

I had two Boxer/Staffordshire Terrier mix pups. They were sisters from the same litter and some of the biggest gobbers around. Scared the pants off most people when they perked up their ears though yet the only things they chased were rabbits and birds.
Aurora banned my babies and it was also the time I went to Iraq, thankfully a friend took them in and they are still doing great. 85 pounds of pure loving, slobbering tongue!!!

Thanks Troublco - I was wondering about Chow. He's pretty tall and has an awfully long snout though. Maybe Chow/Collie or something? I ordered a DNA test (about $60, but worth it if it can satisfy my curiosity). I'll post the results when I get them...

His tongue is all pink... Maybe we should have a pool, and see what the DNA test says. I'll give an old metal AR mag to whoever wins (what can I say - I'm already out $60 for the test).

My wife called me when I was in Longmont in August of 07 and said she had a surprise. She had gone to Thornton Dog Days. I asked her what it was but she wouldnt tell me. I asked her if it involved a lawyer and she said no so I figured what the heck-I'll play along.
He is a Bull Mastiff/Shar-Pei mix and is an awesome dog. He is now 3+ and tips the scales at 100#. I am glad my wife manages a pet store!

You have to give them food and water or they whine. You have to tell them to settle down, or go to bed when they are annoying you. Each chews shit up, well maybe not the dog. They climb up on things they are not supposed to. When they know they have been bad, they try to sneek around you, when they can't get around you they try their best to look pathetic so you don't punnish them. They bury shit in the back yard or hide it in the house. They eat grass and then puke it up later. They actually eat almost anything on the ground... There are other things I am missing...

On the positive side, they like to cuddle with you which is cute. They like to play and rough house a little. Playing fetch with them is fun. They will chase a laser light around the floor and make you laugh. You can play keep away with their favorite toy, that is always entertaining. They will usually eat the food your wife prepares for you that you don't want to eat. They can take the blame for your farts. If you make a mess or whatever, you can just say the dog/baby did it. When you take them to the park, you get all of the attention from the MILF's. My favorite, if you train them right, you can teach them to open the fridge and get you your beer! I know there is more I am missing here also, but, you get the idea.

Then, they get older and out grow most of it...

Finally got in the DNA results for Shadow. Anybody else want in on this? (I'll ship a free AR mag to the closest guess of his ancestry).

So far:
Graves has guessed Chow/Retriever;
Troublco guessed Chow;
Steveopia guessed Chow/Border Collie (after throwing Chow/Shepherd out there), and;
BPTactical guessed Chupacabra.

The DNA test showed 5 breeds; 1 makes up 37-74% of his DNA, and each of the other 4 breeds make up 10-19%.

Here's a hint: the DNA did not show Chupacabra - (sorry Bert).
I'll post the results later this evening...

OK - Here's the certificate with the DNA results. Only 3 folks wanted to make a guess, and all three had Chow in their answer, but Steveopia got the closest. Shadow has mostly German Shepherd, then Shar-Pei, Chow, Collie, and Schnauzer. Steveopia initially said Chow/Shepherd (great guess), then chose Chow/Border Collie, so I've got to give it to him.

Steveopia - PM me your address, and I'll send your mag tomorrow. [Beer]
(I sure didn't expect "Schnauzer")

Wow, that's a heck of a mix. (I didn't think he was pure chow, but I wasn't sure as to what else.) Looking at his face, I can see the Shar-pei and looking at him walking I see the Shepherd. I wouldn't have guessed Collie and I'm with you, I'd have never gotten Schnauzer in a million years. I suppose if he ever starts schnauzing, you'll know why....[ROFL1]

Way to go, Steveopia!

Lord have mercy - I'm still laughing out loud when I read "Chupacabra"! [ROFL2] My wife has even started calling him that sometimes.

I ordered another DNA test for our yellow dog (she's in one of the pics with Chupacabra). I'll post more pics and run another "contest" when it arrives. I think she'll be easier to sort out, but this was fun, so let's do it again.

Chupacabra.... still pissing myself.[LOL]

HA, nice! Our rat terrier/american eskimo mix does that too. Even on a plain grassy hill. He'll roll onto his back and kick his rear legs to propel himself all the way down the hill.
