Hi,

I'm new to the forum. Actually, new to firearms. I have shot a few times in my life but nothing consistent. However, I woke up about 3 weeks ago and had an intense desire to get into shooting. I don't currently own a gun but am actively looking for a handgun to start, then will progress to rifles. I have been going to gun shops around town just to handle as many pistols as possible. I have recently shot XD 9mm and .40sw, Sig P226 .40sw, M&P .40sw, and a couple 1911's. I feel like I want to try some IPSC or IDPA courses at the local clubs (after I put about 500 rounds through, getting used to whichever gun I get) and want to start with 9mm (economics and availability). Then, when I get totally wrapped up in it (which will happen, I know), I will go up in caliber with the next one.
That being said, I have narrowed it down to the XDm 9mm and the M&P 9mm Pro. I have not been able to shoot either of these yet, because the ranges normally don't have the upgraded versions for rent. However, as I stated earlier, I have fired the base models and enjoyed both. I like the feel of the XDm and M&P Pro better, since I have big hands the different back strips should help get the perfect fit.
So, sorry for the long intro but I thought it would open it up to any feedback for those that look at this post.
Cheers!

Welcome aboard.

Of the two you mentioned, I would go with the XDM. I'm not really a S&W guy.

Have you tried an H&K? They are too big for some people, might fit you well.

Welcome.

If you have big hands you might want to try a Glock.

Welcome.

If you have big hands you might want to try a Glock.

i've held the Glocks a couple times, but the grip angle is so different i would have been shooting randomly into the sky.

i appreciate the suggestions.

No need to be sorry, we like the long intro's better than the quick sort ones - let's us get to know you better.

Welcome to the site and the joy that is the firearms addiction (just wait until you start getting into AR's - abandon all hope at that point!).

We've got a ton of very knowledgable folks here on the site that are most usually quite ready to share their experiences and offer any advice that you might request.

The best way to get the most from this site is to jump on into the various forums and threads and be as active here as time allows.

Again, welcome.

Welcome! I've owned everything from XD's to M&P's to Glocks. They are all great pistols, and you are certainly doing the right thing in trying to handle as many as possible. I finally settled on Glocks as my fav, but would certainly love to get another XD45c, and LOVED my M&P40c. Basically what i'm saying, is of the pistols you mentioned, you really couldn't make a bad choice, as long as it works for YOU! Again, welcome aboard, there are many great folks here, and tons of info.
