View Full Version : Screw the recession, I'm going to college!

As the title says, screw this shit going on right now, I'm going to enroll in college. Not just any college though. A college for gunsmiths. It requires me moving to Trinidad for it, it will suck living in a town of less than 10,000 people. At least they have a Walmart! Between the grants and student loans, we will have more than enough for school plus extra to get by. Their school is the oldest and biggest in the nation and most reguarded. You have a job when you get out, period. You get offers from Remington and all the other big companies. Remington hires from that school and no others and there are usually more spots offered for hire by companies than there are students.

HHMMMM... deal with the recession just to get another "man I hate this job" kind of job. I was an HVAC Foreman and I still hated the job. I have ran my own car lot, hated that too. Now, learning how to build guns from blocks of metal, and how to put the rest of them together including the old ones... Sounds good to me! Devoting two years of my life to do this doesn't seem bad considering all the other things I have wasted two years on. [Coffee]

Good for you. It takes balls to bust that move. Kudos.

Congratulations on the decision.

Any major life change takes courage to actually step into, but it sounds like you have a plan and know that you want 'something better' for yourself. Tremendous idea.

Good luck!

Thanks for your support guys. The entire course is 72 credit hours. They charge $158.25 per credit hour, $11,394 for the two years. Between the two years that is of course $5,697 a year and $2,848.50 a semister. The tools supplies and books you need to complete the course is more than half of what it costs for tuition at $5,794. The grand total for everything is $17,188. Now as far as covering all the fees and tuition the Pell grant alone is $4,310 a year, $8,620 for the two year course. The colorado student grant is $1,000 a year also, both of which are as easy to get as just filling out the paperwork. So that alone is $10,620 for just doing the paperwork. I don't know details yet, but my wife knows of plenty of other grants that are easy to get. If you have a family the door is open even more. If I can get all the same ones my wife got going through school, everything will be covered with grants alone! That is great because you don't pay grants back like loans. For extra money if we need the help, I will just get student loans. I will be calling Monday to see when the next enrollment is. By the way it looks, I think it starts in the fall which sucks. That and moving are the only bad things that I can come up with.

Good for you man!! Absolutely awesome. I'm not ashamed to say that I'm feeling a bit of envy right now.

I was going to go to CST but upon further research found out that the school has gone downhill and you don't get what you pay for. Trinidad gets great reviews and seems to have a great course. My current situation doesn't allow me to relocate so I'm sticking with what I'm doing for now.

Sincerely Spyder, congratulations!!

Become a member down at the NRA center. All the ranges ya could want for like $50 per year. Only 20 min south of Trinidad.

Congrats on the decision! I have seriously considered that myself. Trinidad seems the better of the two Colorado options. 20k and two year wait for Colorado School of Trades kinda dissuaded me. You'll be close to the Whittington Center![Luck]

Congratulations on your decision, and good luck! My Uncle took the Trinidad Gunsmithing course many many years ago, and he can literally fix anything firearm related. Trinidad is also a beautiful part of the State, I hope you enjoy it, and I wish you and your family well.

That is going to be one of the biggest drags about moving from here. I can walk out of my house, drive 15 minutes to any areas of the BLM land around and go shooting. I will miss that.
