View Full Version : Another Ruger Countdown

Does anyone know what the new gun is that Ruger is releasing tomorrow? I've heard speculation about either a 1911 or some sort of tactical shotgun.
Clues? Guesses?
Disclaimer: I searched the forum for this topic but didn't find anything. Sorry if I missed it.

My guess is 1911 with Caspian frame.

I found someone else saying it was "for sure" going to be a polymer-framed single action (with a built-in laser in the ejector rod...I'm hoping that's a joke).
How about a SR-308? That'd be cool.
1911-2011???
My bet is on a 1911.
On a related Ruger note I see they are now offering SR-556 uppers for sale. That's cool.

Kinda reminds me of a bolt action Mini-30. It looks like it has the same front sight/flash suppresor on it that my Mini-14 has.
I would suspect that their new release will be a 1911 as well.

They've been out for about a year. Really nice gun for the money. I've shot one...quite accurate and reliable with pretty much any type of ammo.

I'm not usually big on Ruger bolt guns (simply personal preference) but if they're not inordinately proud of this one, I may have to look into one simply because of the magazine. I have a nice built by me scout gun in .308 but the magazine is nice. How hard are they to get, Bailey? And how much?

I picked one of these up years ago from Dave's. I like it, but I don't want to cart it around as a scout gun unless I can find a second one.
My bet is on a 1911 as well. Most of the other big players have a 1911 in their pistol lineup, it just makes sense for Ruger to have one; like the AR...

I'd probably sell them for around $699.00 + 3.9% tax. I've checked several distributors but no one seems to have them readily available just yet. They're probably allocated right now while they get into the supply stream.
List on the gun is $995. It's a model M77-GS (GunSite) and Ruger's item # is 6803.

Ruger Introduces New Platform in Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle
(http://www.ruger.com/news/2010-12-29a.html)December 29, 2010
Sturm, Ruger & Company, Inc. (NYSE: RGR) is proud to announce the Ruger® Gunsite Scout Rifle, the ideal "fighting carbine" in .308 Winchester that is a credible rendition of Col. Jeff Cooper's Scout Rifle concept. Cooper called for a relatively lightweight, hard hitting, do-all rifle that in the hands of an accomplished shooter was able to place accurate, sustained fire out to long ranges, yet was quick-handling and light enough for all-day carry.
Developed in conjunction with Gunsite instructor Ed Head, the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle is a new platform in the Ruger M77® family. While the Scout Rifle has M77 features such as controlled round feed and integral scope mounts (scope rings included), the 10-round detachable box magazine is the first clue this isn't your grandfather's Ruger rifle.
"Ruger has taken an in depth look at the intended purpose of a Scout Rifle and developed a full-featured rifle designed to meet the Scout Rifle criteria of hunt, fight, defend," says Head. "This firearm offers outstanding features in an affordable, versatile and reliable rifle designed to deliver .308 Winchester performance in a variety of situations. It is compact, lightweight, offers 10-round box magazines, can be fit to the individual shooter, and accommodates a host of optics. It is a serious rifle for those serious about rifles."
The Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle has a 16.5" medium contour, cold hammer-forged, alloy steel barrel with a Mini-14® protected non-glare post front sight and receiver mounted, adjustable ghost ring rear sight for out-of-the-box usability. A forward mounted Picatinny rail offers options in mounting an assortment of optics - including Scout Scopes available from Burris® and Leupold®, for "both eyes open" sighting and super-fast target acquisition.
A Mini-14/SR-556® flash suppressor is effective on reducing the muzzle flash that may be present on some .308 Winchester loads when fired out of the short (16.5") barrel. The 5/8-24 muzzle threads allow most standard .30 caliber muzzle accessories - flash suppressors, muzzle brakes, and sound suppressors - to be installed.
The Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle features a matte black oxide alloy steel barrel and receiver on a black laminate stock with sling swivel studs and checkered grip and forearm. A soft rubber recoil pad, with three 1/2" spacers allows the length of pull to be adjusted and allow the rifle to be properly sized for different shooters, or to give the shooter the proper fit with outerwear or defensive gear of varying thickness. With its compact size and weighing in at just under seven pounds, the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle combines ease of carry and shooting for the serious Scout Rifle enthusiast.
The rifle's trigger guard and magazine well are formed with glass-reinforced nylon. The magazine release is a push-forward Mini-14 paddle just ahead of the trigger guard. "Gunsite Scout Rifle" is engraved on the grip cap of the laminated, weather resistant stock, and the receiver is roll-marked "Ruger Gunsite Scout", commemorating the collaboration of Ruger with Gunsite Academy, America's oldest private firearms training facility.
As they say, beware the man with one gun, for he probably knows how to use it. Never has this been more true than with the Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle, the one rifle to have if you could only have one. It is the perfect lightweight, hard-hitting, do-it-all bolt-action rifle - where rugged, reliable Ruger meets the practical, tactical.

From previous comments it doesn't sound like many would have been complaining had they done a 1911, yet they certainly wouldn't have been first to that party.

I'm disappointed. Not terribly surprised, but disappointed. I suppose there's a decent market for something like this, but I would really think that there would be more of a market for a 1911 based on their popularity. I don't really need or want more than one small frame autoloader for carry, but I have 3 1911's. They have been doing well (as far as I know) with their SR-556, it seems a 1911 would a logical step in their product line. I think that scout rifle is a great thing, although I think their retail list price is rather steep for what it is. Of course, for around what Bailey said he could sell one for I'm thinking hard about one. This little 9, not so much.
to be honest I think it is a great idea. I had an lcp , and was pretty damn impressed with the little pocket pistol, yet still worried about the smaller caliber. I think there is a huge market for a small 9mm that can be concieled so easily, yet still pack a punch.. Its on my list to buy, and as majority of ruger's firearms, it will be affordable as well. I have always felt ruger to be one of the best bang for the buck manufactures of firearms out there. I have several of their m77 rifles, and out of the box accuracy is second to none, when you factor in price and overalll build quality
I was mildly interested until I saw that it was 6" long. Can't fit that in my back pocket.

Hadn't even considered this. I was way off. I really like my Kel-Tec PF-9 so I was thinking this might be one to look at...until I read this:
A single-sided manual safety and a magazine disconnect are additional features of the Ruger LC9.

I am a bit of a Ruger fan myself. I was hoping that they were going to release the SR40C. I absolutely LOVE my SR9C and am anxiously awaiting the .40.
Have read that they may release it at the 2011 shot show. Just rumors of course.

0.7" longer than the PM9 and 0.5" taller. Definitely not a pocket 9mm. What's the point? Hell, its just as big as a CW9 which is two sizes larger than Kahr's smallest 9mm. I guess they targeted a niche pistol and wanted to go after it...
Hadn't even considered this. I was way off. I really like my Kel-Tec PF-9 so I was thinking this might be one to look at...until I read this:
The PM9 is slightly smaller than the PF9, so this thing is much bigger. Not even on the radar. And how is a magazine disconnect a "safety feature"? Do people carry with one in the chamber and the mag out of it? [ROFL1]

Which Keltec? It's bigger than any Keltec 9mm handgun by a good margin, even the P11. Not even in the same class IMHO. I bet it's not much smaller than an SR9c but I don't feel like looking up the dimensions right now.
Edit: alright I did anyway. It's 0.1" shorter height and 0.85" shorter length than the SR9c. What a winner.
I think I'll just hang on to my KelTec P11 and spend the extra $200 on something nice....
Maybe when they smell the stink they will fix it.

So, either it was incorrect in the first place or they have already "fixed" the magazine disconnect 'safety' feature.
Or they are politely not mentioning it on their website.
Also, why a manual safety on a DAO pocket gun? What a waste. Unless it has some super amazing DA trigger.
