View Full Version : Any Locksmiths on board?

So my safe's combination lock is starting to get sporadic in operation and opening. I pulled the inside door cover and the back of the lock off. No debris/broken parts inside and I did use a bit of graphite lock lube and it seems smoother and a bit more consistent.
Should I trust it or replace the lock?
Is the sporadic operation a harbringer of total failure in the future?
It is a Sargent and Greenleaf mechanical.

Thanks

I have a friend who is a locksmith, I can ask him if he'd be willing to answer your questions.

Please define more... what does your use of "sporadic" mean? Is it a "clicking" lock, meaning as you turn the dial you hear AND FEEL the numerica clicks? Are those clicks not always clicking? etc... just need a little more info.

You really cannot feel or hear any appreciable indicators other than opening when the lock bar lifts.
Sporadic- I can dial the combo numerous times and it won't unlock and then out of the blue it will unlock the next time I dial the combo.
Aggravating as hell- last night it took me half an hour to get in it.

hmm... it may be that teeth are not catching on a grease wheel since you mentioned you put a little graphite in it and it smoothed out for you...

If the lock is a mechanical then it may be possible to pull off the interior wall and dissasemble the lock to clean it. Or it could be simply a pin holding gears has come out of its sheath. If it's mechanical, you should be able to find a diagram online somewhere....

Anyways, I would call a locksmith and have it inspected. They'll know better after specifically looking at it. Could be a simply maintance repair or you may just need to throw a new lock on it.

How old and what model is it?

Like I said earlier, just put a trunk monkey in your safe armed with an AK and close the door, you won't need to ever lock it again.
