Black powder

I have been wanting to put together a black powder rifle for some time now.

Any special kits I should look at.

I was at SW at Christmas time and they had one there that I like I cant remember who made it but it looked to be a decent kit.

I just think it would be fun to put together. And I always like shooting my dads black powder rifle.

I got one years ago a Cabella's. A Hawkens with double set triggers. Hardest part was waiting for the finish to dry on the stock, before putting it together. I still haven't shot it yet, other things came up and I just haven't got any BP for it. :oops:

I am a BP nut have several of them if any of you wan't to shoot BP let me know I will bring some to the next shoot.

Marlin if your BP is .50 cal you could bring it to the next shoot and I have everything we need for you to shoot it. If it's not .50 cal all you need to bring is bullets I have everything else.

Edit to add: KC don't buy one of the cheap kits make sure you buy a quality kit from Thompson or somebody comparable.

What are the brands to stay away from?

I think it was a Thompson or Hawkens that they had there but I cant remember. I think I will swing in there tomorrow afternoon and take another look.

Thompson is the best by far as old school black powder. The gun Marlin has and I too have one are ok not real bad but not great either. Most of the cheap guns are made in Itally I have a few, the Cabela's hawken that me and Marlin have are made in Itally.

If you are trying for the old school hawken I personally would just buy a T/C hawken. Most brand names like Knights, Omega are modern day I don't know for sure if they ever made old school rifles. CVA is another great brand check with them.

The cheapest I would go is with the Cabelas hawkin they are not bad, it's just if I brought my Cabela's hawken and my T/C hawken to a shoot and let you check them both out you would understand how much superior the T/C is.

I still hunt every year with my Cabela's hawkin because out to 100 yrds I can hit anything. (plus I have been too damn lazy to play with the T/C and find a good acurate load.)

The problem with BP KC is there is no regulations buying one is like buying a loaf of bread. No 4473 no back ground check, hell you can mail order them all day long. There are so many companies that make them and a lot of them are junk. Stay with a name brand like T/C, CVA ect. let me know what brand the one your looking at is.

one thing to mention!!! I have been into blk pwder shooting since the early eighties. in the old days cva was a joke. hell you would get tarred and feathered for taking one into rendevouz?even the t/c hawken, lyman trade rifle and all the other "hawken" rifles look as much like a true hawken as a ar15 looks like a ak47!!. the italian copies are probably as good as the t/c. the lyman great plains rifle is probably the closest to resembling a hawken as you can get with out having one of the custom builders make you one for $1500. and up. but it really doesn't matter. buy what you like . and remember: powder,patch,ball!!! have fun they will amaze you with their accuracy :)
