Arizona Congresswoman Shot at Public Event
Published January 08, 2011
| FoxNews.com
Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot along with three of her aides by a gunman Saturday morning outside a grocery store in Tucson while holding a public event, Fox News has confirmed.
Twelve others were shot as well at Giffords' "Your Corner" event held at Safeway. The gunman is in custody.
Giffords was taken to a hospital but the condition of those shot was not immediately known, a senior congressional aide told Fox News.
The three staffers who were shot worked out of Giffords' Arizona office.
Giffords has held multiple "Your Corner" events over the past four years, the aide told Fox News, adding that she had held three previous events that this venue before.
Giffords was re-elected to her third term as representative of Arizona's 8th Congressional District. She is married to astronaut Mark Kelly.
Fox News' Chad Pergram contributed to this report.

Rest in peace
Not good, never want to see this sort of thing.
I was just getting ready to post this as well.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theticket/20110108/ts_yblog_theticket/report-congresswoman-giffords-shot
that link says the sheriff is saying she is still alive though.
either way, not good at all. hopefully she is alive and recovers, if not rest in peace.
she was married to an astronaut -- Mike Kelly
some of the comments that caught my eye:
"One of the more outlandish was a statement she made during a radio interview last January in which she floated the idea that the public would bring down an out-of-control Congress with 'Second Amendment remedies."
"Get On Target for Victory in November. Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office. Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly—Conservative Republican for Congress. Saturday, June 12, 2010 at 10:00. Minimum Contribution of $50. Pima Pistol Club.
I'd say there is some explaining to do/liability...R.I.P"
"She was "targeted" on the sick www.sarahpac.com poster. Do the math."
looks to me like someone wanted to push a message. maybe it was a simple outlash among a troubled person, but it could be something deeper from a group telling elected officials people are tired of their bullshit.

Honestly..this whole thing sounds more and more like Mexican politic. Death threats to govt official... gun down public official and count on the backlash.
I hope the motivation is clearly investigated and the shooter is prosecuted to the full extend of the law. Prayers to the family.
The reports I see say she is still alive and in surgery at this point.
Suspect arrested. Im glad this dude was arrested an not killed so we can find out why.

Early twenties, or late teens? Automatic weapon? Sounds like a drug cartel hit.
But hold onto your guns folks, congress is going to defend themselves the only way they know how, by curtailing our rights.
All murder is tragedy, this is not more or less tragic than the young black street drug dealer gunned down by a rival, ALL murder is wrong - but this was a congresscritter - so you know it's going to get a lot more attention than the normal murder. Whenever an elite member of society dies, police departments soil themselves in getting the investigation done.
While I think it's appropriate for us gun owners to decry the crime and dwell on it, remember that she and other members of the crowd SHOULD have been able to stop this madman with their own firearms.
I can see several billion being allotted for congress to hire themselves a few thousand personal bodyguards.
It does seem like she violated a big rule of security, as, apparently, she had held this same type of meeting in that exact spot several times before.
Throughout the history of this land congress members have been murdered by someone who disagrees with them, but our country is in a unique situation at this moment with massive federal government programs to combat 'terrorism' - this will shift our paradigm greatly.
but speaking politically, while I may have despised her elitist stance on things, I'm an American and there are ways to protest someone's political record in the USA - this murderer clearly wasn't an American in any sense that I recognize.
A cartel drug hit would not surprise me one bit, as something like this was going to happen sooner or later due to our BULLSHIT stance on border control. One thing that was clearlry apparent while watching the news this morning, was how many times the term "Semi Automatic weapon" was used. Once again, the Frickin media trying to pour more fuel on the fire...This will be interesting...Thoughts and prayers go out to her family..
I'm not sure what to think yet.
The reports I see say she is still alive and in surgery at this point.

A few thoughts.
Already all the leftist trolls are all over the news articles commenting that it's the tea party's fault, Sarah Palin is to blame, GOP, etc. Mostly because they're too damn stupid to know history, and that almost every assassin/terrorist in American history to go after politicians has been either left wing or anarchist.
Rep Boehner is obviously a politician, in his speech after the fact he clearly says how horrible it is to attack elected officials, but never points out it doesn't matter who you are, it's horrible to be attacked like this.
Apparently someone with a CCW returned fire and distracted the assassin long enough for someone in the crowd to tackle him to the ground. At no point in any of the current news stories is any mention of police or security at the event doing anything or even being there. I admit this part may be subject to change as is the rest of it.

All killers of politicians get to use all three of their names, apparently he joins the ranks:
Jared LEE Laughner
I get why someone would seek to kill someone who has done something to anger them PERSONALLY, like rape their sister or kill their father, etc...
What I don't get is this kind of murder - what made him SNAP? If it was a pure political thing, he would have shot just politicians, but he didn't - he shot a little girl and anybody else that was near. None of us here understand this kind of thinking. What are the odds this murderer spent any amount of time as a teenager on antidepressants? Like the Columbine murderers and so many other young men who have done this kind of thing...

yeah where did you hear that?
I can't find it anywhere on MSN or CNN so it probably happened.
House Speaker John Boehner said he was "horrified" by the shooting.
"An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve," he said. "Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society."
I really don't like that bold part. And the second ammendment is a standing threat of violence against tyranny.

... What does that mean mr Elhuero?
The Greek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_language) phrase Molōn labe! (Μολὼν λαβέ; approximate Ancient Greek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Greek) pronunciation [molɔ̀ːn labé] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_Greek), Modern Greek (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modern_Greek) [moˈlon laˈve] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:IPA_for_Greek)), meaning "Come and take them" is a classical expression of defiance reportedly by King Leonidas I (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonidas_I) in response to the Persian army's demand that the Spartans surrender their weapons at the Battle of Thermopylae (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Thermopylae). It corresponds roughly to the modern equivalent English phrase "over my dead body (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Over_my_dead_body)", "bring it on" or, most closely, "come and get it". It is an exemplary use of a laconic phrase (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laconic_phrase).

Thanks for doing the research cstone!
I would be as worried if this was something other than a congresswoman.
guess we will see what they come up with.
we have won a lot of good battles over the right for individuals to bear arms, but now a magazine ban or cali type laws could come up quickly.
best thing to do is show sympathy toward the victims but maintain our stance that no matter what laws are enacted these types of events are always going to occur at some point.
the guy could just of easily stolen or owned a large truck and came rushing into the crowd with that.
I'm not saying that some politicians somewhere won't use this tragic incident to further their idiotic notion about stopping lunatics by limiting our rights to purchase and own firearms, however, the last time I checked, RG Industries RG-14 .22 revolvers and Carcano Modello 1895 6.5mm rifles are still available for sale in the United States.

Molon labe (http://thefiringline.com/HCI/molon_labe.htm)
(mo-lone lah-veh)
http://thefiringline.com/HCI/images/Leonidas.gif
Two little words. With these two words, two concepts were verbalized that have lived for nearly two and a half Millennia. They signify and characterize both the heart of the Warrior, and the indomitable spirit of mankind. From the ancient Greek, they are the reply of the Spartan General-King Leonidas to Xerxes, the Persian Emperor who came with 600,000 of the fiercest fighting troops in the world to conquer and invade little Greece, then the center and birthplace of civilization as we know it. When Xerxes offered to spare the lives of Leonidas, his 300 personal bodyguards and a handful of Thebans and others who volunteered to defend their country, if they would lay down their arms, Leonidas shouted these two words back.
Molon Labe! (mo-lone lah-veh)
They mean, “Come and get them!” They live on today as the most notable quote in military history. And so began the classic example of courage and valor in its dismissal of overwhelming superiority of numbers, wherein the heart and spirit of brave men overcame insuperable odds. Today, there lies a plaque dedicated to these heroes all at the site. It reads: “Go tell the Spartans, travelers passing by, that here, obedient to their laws we lie.”
We have adopted this defiant utterance as a battle cry in our war against oppression because it says so clearly and simply towards those who would take our arms.
It signifies our determination to not strike the first blow, but also to not stand mute and allow our loved ones, and all that we believe in and stand for, to be trampled by men who would deprive us of our God-given – or natural, if you will – rights to suit their own ends.

I am maintaining the stance that I am far more outraged at this tragedy, because it looks bad on 99% of gun owners, and prohibition does not work.

I hear shes a pro 2nd supporter, it would be pretty big if she pulls through and still has speach and can function. She would really be able hurt any new gun bans they might try if she is pro 2nd and stood up for it after this.

They played a sound clip of her saying how she owns guns, and how guns are part of the culture of her state, but that is not to say that assault weapons don't cause law enforcement a lot of problems.

According to Gun Owners of America, she's got a "D" grade for Pro 2nd amendment issues. I wish the woman a speedy recovery, but the bought and paid for press is trying to make her out as some kind of "born again" democrat who was championing immigration reform, and while she's made statements about the feds needing to do a better job, when it comes down to the vote's she cast - she was 100 percent lockstep with Pelosi on immigration reform.
So she's not pro-gun and she's not for ACTUAL immigration reform. Just another Pelosi-zombie, regardless of how much people LIKED her.
Anybody remember when Tommy Tancredo turned his back on gunowners? He courted us fiercely, until he got into office, then he refused all invitations for comment on the 2nd amendment. Another party tool.
I think I said this already, but this is no more tragic than any other murder - or how about the 14 decapitated corpses found hanging in a major Mexican resort town? This is only big news because of the bottom-feeding liberal press fawning over a fallen master.

If the buckles had failed or something, I am sure that her drones would have already had pictures of them all over the media and had the Manufacturer in court and Mandated a ban of that seat in Colorado with a report to the NTSB.

By JUSTIN PRITCHARD, Associated Press Justin Pritchard, Associated Press – 2 hrs 40 mins ago
TUCSON, Ariz. – At an event roughly three years ago, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords took a question from Jared Loughner, the man accused of trying to assassinate her and killing six other people. According to two of his high school friends the question was essentially this: "What is government if words have no meaning?"
Loughner was angry about her response — she read the question and had nothing to say.
"He did not like government officials, how they spoke. Like they were just trying to cover up some conspiracy," one friend told The Associated Press on Sunday.
Both friends spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they wanted to avoid the publicity surrounding the case. To them, the question was classic Jared: confrontational, nonlinear and obsessed with how words create reality.
The friends' comments paint a picture bolstered by other former classmates and Loughner's own Internet postings: That of a social outcast with nihilistic, almost indecipherable beliefs steeped in mistrust and paranoia.
"If you call me a terrorist then the argument to call me a terrorist is Ad hominem," the 22-year-old wrote Dec. 15, part of a wide-ranging screed that was posted in video form and ended with this: "What's government if words don't have meaning?"
On Sunday, Loughner was charged with the shootings a day earlier at a political event outside a Tucson supermarket. Aside from the six killed, 14 people were wounded. Doctors were optimistic about Giffords' chances for survival.
Loughner had at least one other contact with Giffords. Investigators said they carried out a search warrant at Loughner's home and seized a letter addressed to him from Giffords' congressional stationery in which she thanked him for attending a "Congress on your Corner" event at a mall in Tucson in 2007 — the same kind of event where officials say Loughner opened fire Saturday.
Other evidence seized from his home included an envelope from a safe with messages such as "I planned ahead," "My assassination" and the name "Giffords" next to what appears to be Loughner's signature.
His high school friends said they fell out of touch with Loughner and last spoke to him around March, when one of them was going to set up some bottles in the desert for target practice and Loughner suggested he might come along. It was unusual — Loughner hadn't expressed an interest in guns before — and his increasingly confrontational behavior was pushing them apart. He would send nonsensical text messages, but also break off contact for weeks on end.
"We just started getting sketched out about him," the friend said. It was the first time he'd felt that way.
Around the same time, Loughner's behavior also began to worry officials at Pima Community College, where Loughner began attending classes in 2005, the school said in a release.
Between February and September, Loughner "had five contacts with PCC police for classroom and library disruptions," the statement said. He was suspended in September 2010 after college police discovered a YouTube video in which Loughner claimed the college was illegal according to the U.S. Constitution. He withdrew voluntarily the following month, and was told he could return only if he met certain conditions, including getting a mental health professional to agree that his presence on campus did not present a danger, the school said.
To his friends, it had been a gradual alienation.
The Loughner they met when he was a freshman at Mountain View High School may have been socially awkward, but he was generally happy and fun to be around. The crew smoked marijuana everyday, and when they weren't going to concerts or watching movies they talked about the meaning of life and dabbled in conspiracy theories.
Mistrust of government was his defining conviction, the friends said. He believed the government was behind 9/11, and worried that governments were maneuvering to create a unified monetary system ("a New World Order currency" one friend said) so that social elites and bureaucrats could control the rest of the world.
On his YouTube page, he listed among his favorite books "Animal Farm" and "Brave New World" — two novels about how authorities control the masses. Other books he listed in the wide-ranging list included "Mein Kampf," "The Communist Manifesto," "Peter Pan" and Aesop's Fables.
Over time, Loughner became increasingly engrossed in his own thoughts — what one of the friends described as a "nihilistic rut."
Loughner, an ardent atheist, began to characterize people as sheep whose free will was being sapped by the monotony of modern life.
"He didn't want people to wake up and do the same thing every day. He wanted more chaos, he wanted less regularity," one friend said.
The friend added that Loughner believed government was trying to get people to accept their meaningless lives so that they would stop dreaming — literally.
He told anyone who would listen that the world we see does not exist, that words have no meaning — and that the only way to derive meaning was during sleep.
Loughner began obsessing about a practice called lucid dreaming, in which people try to actively control their dreams. He kept a detailed journal about what he saw while asleep, and tried to get the friends involved.
Several people who knew Loughner at community college said he did not seem especially political, but was socially awkward. He laughed at the wrong things, made inappropriate comments. Most students sat away from him in class.
"He made a lot of the people really uncomfortable, especially the girls in the class," said Steven Cates, who attended an advanced poetry writing class with Loughner at Pima Community College last spring. Though he struck up a superficial friendship with Loughner, he said a group of other students went to the teacher to complain about Loughner at one point.
Another poetry student, Don Coorough, said Loughner read a "kind of a bland" poem about going to the gym in wild "poetry slam" style — "grabbing his crotch and jumping around the room."
When other students read their poems, meanwhile, Coorough said Loughner "would laugh at things that you wouldn't laugh at." After one woman read a poem about abortion, "he was turning all shades of red and laughing," and said, "Wow, she's just like a terrorist, she killed a baby," Coorough said.
"He appeared to be to me an emotional cripple or an emotional child," Coorough said. "He lacked compassion, he lacked understanding and he lacked an ability to connect."
Cates said Loughner "didn't have the social intelligence, but he definitely had the academic intelligence."
"He was very into the knowledge aspect of school. He was really into his philosophy classes and he was really into logic and English. And he would get frustrated by the dumbed-down words people used in class," Cates said.
Loughner expressed his interest in grammar and logic on the Internet as he made bizarre claims — such as that the Mars rover and the space shuttle missions were faked.
He frequently used "if-then" constructions in making nonsensical arguments. For instance: "If the living space is able to maintain the crews life at a temperature of -454F then the human body is alive in the NASA Space Shuttle. The human body isn't alive in the NASA Space Shuttle. Thus, the living space isn't able to maintain the crews life at a temperature of -454F."
Loughner also said in one video that government is "implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar." He said described America's laws as "treasonous," said the "every human who's mentally capable is always able to be treasurer of their new currency," and that "if the property owners and government officials are no longer in ownership of their land and laws from a revolution then the revolutionary's from the revolution are in control of the land and laws."
Loughner described himself as a U.S. military recruit in the video, but the Army released a statement indicating Loughner was not accepted.
"He attempted to enlist in the Army but was rejected for service. In accordance with the Privacy Act, we will not discuss why he was rejected," it said.
Loughner tried to enlist because it was one way of getting out of the "T-Loc" life — kicking around as a Tucson local — one of the friends said.
In October 2007, Loughner was cited in Pima County for possession of drug paraphernalia, which was dismissed after he completed a diversion program, according to online records.
A year later he was charged with an unknown "local charge" in Marana near Tucson. That charge was also dismissed following the completion of a diversion program in March 2009, the Daily Star reported.
"He has kind of a troubled past, I can tell you that," Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said.
drug addict, loner, atheist, kicked out of school, mentally unstable, conspiracy theorist.

The Media & The Shooter
Posted by Erick Erickson Sunday, January 9th
This morning we pray for Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, her family, and the other victims of the heinous violence in Arizona.
It should not be, but the media, under the guise of “a full exposition” of the evil in Arizona, is back to subtly and not so subtly pinning the blame for the attempted assassination of the Congresswoman and the related shootings on the tea party movement, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, me, you, and everyone right of center.
Let’s be crystal clear: this is the supposedly objective news media doing this, not the openly, partisan left, though it is fueling the media witch hunt. And from what we now know, it is not just media malpractice, but a lie.
Ironically, by perpetuating the lie — by even treating it as a legitimate topic of consideration to revisit the accusations of violence and hate the media tried to run with prior to the November election — that the right and the tea party incited this evil act, the left and media may very well incite violence against the right.
Today, the Sunday Shows will all be from Arizona. There will, I have no doubt, be many of them wanting to know if “rhetoric” and “tea parties” and “opposition to Barack Obama” did this.
They will also bring up, as they did yesterday, Sarah Palin putting Gabrielle Giffords on her target list for defeat with a rifle scope symbol over her district.
Here is what will either not be brought up, or if brought up, will only be mentioned in passing.
Markos Moulitsas of the Daily Kos, the largest left-wing community online, put Gabrielle Giffords on a target list with a bullseye. Just as Sarah Palin removed her post, Markos has removed his.
Another Daily Kos writer, just the other day, penned a post saying Congresswoman Giffords was dead to him.
But then there is the real culprit — the shooter himself.
A friend of the shooter’s described the shooter as decidedly “left-wing” as recently as 2007.
On YouTube, he flagged as a favorite video one of a person dressed as a terrorist burning the American flag. Only a lunatic or a leftist would do that.
His favorite work was not a Glenn Beck book, but a staple of every left-wing bookshelf, the Communist Manifesto.
In the Communist Manifesto, there are numerous, frequent calls for violence against the bourgeoisies.
Left-wing cartoonist Ted Rall’s most recent book calls for a violent response from the left against the right.
Barack Obama himself told left-wing activists, “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun.”
The point of all of this is not to blame Ted Rall, Mr. Obama, Media Matters, MSNBC, any other particular person or group on the left, or the left in general. It is also not to say in any way, shape, or form that the guy is of the left. If, however, we take the evidence as presented and not as the media and left would have it presented, the shooter very clearly is not of the right.
More precisely, the shooter is neither left-wing nor right-wing. He is crazy and evil — a word not used enough. The guy is very clearly not of the tea party movement, not a Dittohead, not led by Sarah Palin, me, or anyone else on the right.
But the media, at least as of this morning and its accumulated coverage so far on this matter, could not care less. The media is intent on yet again exploring right-wing rhetoric and tea party hate. Left-wingers yesterday were falling all over themselves to blame everyone on the right for the horrific shooting.
The media today, as it begins more expansive reporting, will not let the facts get in the way of making the right, yet again, responsible for violence it neither incited nor enabled. In the process, the media’s credibility will continue to shrink.
By the way, as an exit thought, the tea party movement won in November. Winners don’t go on shooting sprees.
