[nsr] rest in peace - major richard "dick" winters - hero of d-day

I regret to report that Richard "Dick" Winters has made his final jump - he has passed away after a long illness. A quiet and humble man, Winters received a level of fame he wasn't used to after HBO turned the Stephen Ambrose book Band of Brothers into an acclaimed mini-series in 2001.

Winters served as an officer in the 101st Airborne Division's 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, Easy Company.

"Grandpa, were you a hero in the war?"

"No, but I served in the company of heroes"

RIP Major.

God Speed Major.

Our WWII heroes are dying off at an incredibly fast rate. Find one and thank them today. If you're in Denver check out Honor Flight and see about volunteering to help send them off or welcome them home. One of the most incredible nights of my life was welcoming a flight home from DC.

His book 'Biggest Brother' covers his story during WWII in more detail - and his life after the Korean war. It's really humbling.

I'm bummed.

In the commentary of one of the episodes a member of E company, I think it was John Martin said that Winters was always out front.

"I don't know how he survived... but he did."

A humble, great man.

"That night, I took time to thank God for seeing me through that day of days and prayed I would make it through D plus 1. And if, somehow, I managed to get home again, I promised God and myself that I would find a quiet piece of land someplace and spend the rest of my life in peace."

Mission accomplished.
