Good shooting. I always wanted to shoot pigs. Did you take all of them with AR's in .223? what kind of ammo? how many shots? how far? Moar Details.

At the risk of sounding silly . . .
Are these pigs that you're hunting the pigs that are considered to have an "out of control" population? Wild pigs that are overrunning certain areas? And if so, are they safe for eating? I remember reading somewhere that you shouldn't eat the wild pigs due to disease or something like that.
Looks like a fun and potentially very tasty time. Nice pics. Thanks for sharing!!

Mmmm tasty! That little pig looks delicious

Okay I'll try to go in order:
1)All pigs shown here were taken with AR's in .223. I used 62gr HP's (PMC) the shots ranged between 70 yards and 10 yards ( I am an exceptionally sneaky bastard for a fat guy) All one shot right through the ear hole (get the job done right freaking now thanks) My buddy's who came with me used an AK and a MINI-30 respectively. Shots were made between 40 and 80 yards both used 122gr HP (WOLF). I will say this that 7.62x39 has a HELL of a whack. Where I shot mine in the head it was like laser surgery my friends head shot was more like a detonation. Both cool in their own ways
2)Bacon does rock
3) thanks the shirt is pretty kick ass (says I love Jesus and I love the suds... perfect)
4) These are part of the wild pig menace. We did our part to help control the population. Always thinking of my next trip down there. There is little or no issues on eating other than the usual pork things. The only thing I recommend is when you cook it add some fat to the mix because they are WAY lean. Also the meat is much darker than the pig you pick up at Soopers. More like a cross of venison and chicken (weird bu I think right).
http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs084.snc1/5031_115454808102_710328102_2878953_3128354_n.jpg
A little of the bounty..pulled pork with some Carolina mop sauce
5) That 6.8 would be AWESOME. We hunted on a ranch down there. most of the hunting in TX is done on hunt leases. What I would recommend is start looking for leases or people with land down there where you can go. The hunt ranch is a great option as well. For anyone who has not hunted on a ranch before and thinks it's kind of pussy hunting... WRONG! Two of the toughest days of hunting I can remember were on a ranch. One day was 100* plus with 95% humidity the other day was PISSING rain and about 85* felt like I was back at Ranger school. But the result was way worth wild. 2 trips 4 little piggies!!

GO!! It is freaking AWESOME. We spent a whole afternoon when we were there shooting turtles. Ever shoot a turtle with an AR? Holy smokes is that a riot. You shoot turtles because the wreck the bass fishing ponds. Even if you didn't have a ligit reason it's still fun. Like watery prairie dogs [Muaha]
Bacon, Ham, Sausage, chops, Snout, feet, skins (last three I dont eat but know people who do).....Think I know what type of animal I'm having for dinner.

Never hunted pigs or p. dogs, but when I was a kid in OK I used to go fishing a lot with a neighbor that leased some bass fishing ponds. Those ponds were overran with turtles, and they'd eat the fish right off your stringer. Man, that would piss me off!
So I rigged up my single shot .22 rifle with dad's old deer rifle scope, dialed it in, and did a few tours on the ponds as a "turtle sniper". Damn, that was fun! Had more fun doing that than fishing. I must have killed a couple hundred of them. When only the turtle's head is poking out of the water and you splatter it at 30-40 yds. with a .22, that's great sport!
I'd love to get me some p. dog action someday, wouldn't mind hogs either.

yeah it isn't a bad price.
there are also some guys on ar15.com that own ranches or are guys that work ranches and are the same prices. there are plenty of these out there. even look on craigslist and you will find the same thing.
of course it would be nice to go somewhere that another person you know or kinda know has been to give a thumbs up or down on if it was worth it to go again.
I have been dying to go on a hog hunt at some point but will only take my AR with the silencer.

My hunting buddy and I went down to a ranch a bit south of San Antone a couple years ago and hunted pigs. I'd heard how tough they can be to kill (and so had he) but it was still impressive. I took head shots, because I actually wanted to kill pigs. His first shot, with a .338-06, was in the shoulder (contrary to my advice) and that pig just squealed and ran off. Those are tough buggers! But man are they tasty. Go very nice with some Gates Bros. BBQ sauce and cold beer.

Well we have a couple options. We can drive about 8 hours, and that would be good for about 4 guys. I also have a chunk of land about 14 hours away in Texas and I say 6 would be ok out there. Plus at that location there is a couple tanks for fishing...(or turtle shooting). I suppose the best way to do this is to get ahold of who wants to go where, and try to work it out as fair as possible. Im pretty busy this week but maybe we can start trying to figure out a couple vague details. Its not for another 6 months so nothing is concrete yet.
Count me in either way, I'd gladly truck it down to TX. It'd probably be best if we all go hit the local watering hole (range, pool hall, etc.) and make a plan.

Lonestar,
just want to doublecheck you would be okay with us coming down?
when would be a good time for people to come down?
how much property would we be hunting on?
are there better times to hunt where we would see more hogs?
maybe let us know what some date options are so we can figure out who wants to go when and then decide who would drive, carpool etc.
also as far as lodging, should we bring campers, are there hotels nearby, could we tent it and camp out?
If it is only 8 hours it would be easy to leave super early in the morning, get there for a evening hunt, set up camp or hotel etc, have dinner, and have a couple full days of hunting and then leave the last morning, maybe after a morning hunt.

Ok ill try to answer everything I can.
Yes I am ok with people coming down. I specified how many would make it a decent hunt without getting over crowded. As far as lodging, the location 8 hours away has motels or bring campers/tents. The location further south has a full bed and breakfast house. Best times I have found to hunt are July thru September.
Yes you are correct about the trip it is a very easy drive.
As far as land, there is plenty, couple hundred acres, but when hunting hogs down there, you can tell where they are and there patter because they rip shit up like crazy. SO although there is plenty o' land it wont all be used.
I'd like to push to go farther south, a good friend of mine would likely come along and maybe another if need be all depends on who's serious. I know TX can be hotter than a mofo so I'd be just fine with waiting for Sept. haha.

I need to talk to my Brother in law and see if he can recommend a place. I am interested in going.
I lived in flagstaff for a few years and would have thought Winslow would be too dry for pigs, I guess they are pretty adaptive.
I'll share a bit of a humorous story from a couple of weeks ago. My parents have about 35 acres in TX and have been having increasing problems with pigs tearing things up (I've eaten a couple of the perps they trapped in the past). Anyhow, our last night my mom wakes me up at 2:00 am saying the pigs are back. I get the AR (open sights only) hearing protection and spot light. I tell my mom to stand behind me and shine over my shoulder. We sneak out onto the back porch and she hits them with the spot light. As soon as the light hits them they start running away (about 50 yds) and I start popping. Kind of comical as my mom was swinging towards one pig and I would be keyed in on another so I would loose it. Target acquisition was tough. Then the last one we saw was running along a fence line about 75+ yds away, she and I are on the same pig and I'm on him [AR15], he squeezes under the fence and is gone into the woods. I didn't know pigs could run that fast [LOL]. I went looking and didn't see or hear anything. If I had to guess I was shooting over them as most likely I may not have had the front sight in the peep hole. Hard in the dark, even with a light. I need to say I knew the area behind the pigs was safe, slightly downhill towards a creek. I got about 7 shots off and I woke up everybody in the house except my 12 year daughter. The shooting probably lasted all of 10 - 15 seconds but I still laugh about it.
It was funny hearing my sister recount the story, mainly city girl from the east coast. She wakes up to gun fire, disoriented since she is not in her own bed, trying to figure out where she is and what's gong on, realizes it's ok she is in TX. Oh and it's probably my brother [LOL]
One of the perps that was eaten.

Sweet Mother of God! How is this photo still up? I need to check in here more often!
Huntin' hogs at night is one of my favorite things to do. There's something great about being alone in the middle of nowhere making my way through the Texas brush at night that just makes me feel like home. :)
I saw texas pigs and thought of this in an instant...

OMG, she'd keep you warm in the winter and provide shade in the summer! My kind of girl! :)
Pig hunting is a hoot. I've made three trips to TX and killed four pigs. Been using two AR's, a 450 Bushmaster and a 6.5 Grendel.
As soon as the back gets completely healed, I'll be off again.

Ok I know this thread has drifted but..
I grew up on a hog farm to I've killed a bunch of pigs but slightly different environment and methods.
Through the ear was always good even with a 22lr.
If I recall the heart is really low in the chest cavity. Is this true? So basically you don't want a normal shoulder shot if I remember how the things are built their stomachs are up higher? If you were shooting one straight on you'd want to aim lower third of chest?
