View Full Version : Tighten fit between Upper & Lower

Can anyone tell me if there is an after market part that you can drop into your AR that will tighten the fit between the upper and lower receivers?

My LMT has a little bit of play/wobble in it which I'd like to eliminate cost effectively.

I saw it somewhere, but I have no idea what its called or where to find it.

Thanks!

There's one called the Accu-wedge that's about $5, then there's an o-ring mod that is supposed to do the same thing. HTH.

Edit: Henpecked beat me to it. I was this close...

I think Bowers carries them.

I think Bowers carries them.

Yes he does. I bought a couple from him in December.

- Accuwedge

- Colt used to make a front receiver takedown pin that was threaded and accepted a screw from the end. I think there are still some made now by some aftermarket companies. Grind the pin portion that fits through the receiver shorter so that it does not extend past the lower when fully inserted. When you tighten the screw portion into the pin it will tighten up the upper/lower fit. Blue loc-tite on the screw holds it in place pretty well and keeps the tight fit between the upper/lower.

- JP pin in the rear hole, works extremely well in eliminating wobble. Only problem is that if you need to quickly open up your rifle then you better have a allen wrench handy and had better hope that you don't lose the pieces when you pull the JP pin out. Not field friendly if you need to open up your rifle.

The slight wobble weally doesn't effect anything, but I guess it's a peace of mind thing. I made my own wedge by cutting a "L" shaped chunk of rubber off an old hard recoil pad.

I have modded lowers by drilling and tapping for a nylon tipped setscrew that when adjusted just contacts the pin boss of the upper- it does help but the Accuwedge is a pure drop in that works ok. The only drawback to them is they can make it almost too tight of a fit and can be a bear to get the pin in when they are new. After a few mags have been run they will loosen up a touch.
Unless the play is excessive I would not be too worried about it.

Is it really necessary for it to be TIGHT vs. a decent fit?

No, but a great number of us here tend to lean heavily to the anal retentive side..... ;)

I had one of these in a rifle and it blew out a piece of the lower reciever. It does not evenly distribute the stress/pressure from tightening. As a result it broke out a small piece on the rear of the lower, esentially enlarging the take down hole on the lower. :( JP's answer was I overtightened it but I can assure you I did not. If anything I may have kept it too loose. In any event I'd caution you on the use of this. I've run into one other person that had the same problem that I did. It damaged the lower and I took a $200 loss on it.

Use caution!

Now that's a neat trick.

Alternatively: grease up your upper's rear lug, then apply a bit of RTV to your lower. Close the rifle, engage the pin, "pull" the halves apart.

Custom fit "accuwedge"

I think if the "sloppy" fit between an AR upper and lower bothered a guy, the precision fit of any AK would really make his OCD flare up.

Give them something other than their Ar to complain about.
OT: i see it when AR guys start working on an AK, looks like a Lewis Black monologue.

I use Accuwedge, I have had to cut them down a bit to fit, but it doesn't hurt the performance one bit!

WTF...are we trying to get Benchrest results from an AR...let alone AK...how about just getting enough rounds down range to do some damage. Isn't that what the original purpose of these rifles is?
