I'm pretty new to this forum, but have enjoyed being a member since day one. I've met numerous good people and have made several new friends. People have given me advice, helped me work out some problems, and sold me some nice guns.

Lately, I've noticed a handful of new and not so new members spewing off at the mouth, attacking other members, and basically just being internet bullies. I'm trying to sound like a puss, but that crap gets old and it brings the quality of the forum and discussion down.

A good example is an old thread that was pulled up by a single post newby in the accessories section of the trading post area.

Was it a bit irritating? Yeah. But did he seriously deserve the trash talk that ensued?

We have enough hate in our day-to-day. I come here to meet good people and get away from the rat race outside.

Just saying...

So IDFYF8, why does that 'non-issue' deserves a whole new thread? Probably the same reason why such non issue became an issue. Paradox....[Tooth]

Scammers suck. Agreed!

No man, not singling anybody out. I guess I'm just getting older and see it more and more. This is the best gun forum I've ever been a member of by far. I think sometimes we just let our emotions take control of our mouths/fingers. I'm guilty of it too.

I'm a teacher and I see my kids talking to each other like we do sometimes, using racial slurs, singling each other out for dominance and supremecy, etc...

It saddening.

I saw the particular post I referenced after getting home from a Co Springs to Denver drive. I guess it put in me in the "mood". I moved back to Colorado about 12 years ago and have watched as it has steadily moved away from being heaven to being more and more ganglike and thuggish. I find myself driving deeper and deeper into the bush to find a fishing hole that isn't over run with 100 people tossing their trash about, kids crapping in the streams, and yelling at each other in a language I don't speak.

I come here because you guys are my kind of people. I'm betting most of you still let people in in traffic, hold doors open for your ladies, know how to say "thank you", and would go out of your way to help a buddy and consider it an honor to do so.

still just saying... ( think the Jamison might be doing some "saying too" [Pepsi])

The bunch of us that went to Dragon Man's on Sunday has a merry old time. I think part of the problem is when you don't see someone's face, words come easier. My opinions of a lot of people have changed after meeting them. Weird, Ginsue isn't Herr Moderator! (Completely kidding :) )

But on the same vein, that kind of comraderie can really exclude new people. I see it on a car forum I frequent. A lot of the original members know eachother, hang out with eachother regularly, and if you're not part of the "crew" you might as well GTFO.

I don't know how to fix that second problem, but being more social might go a long way on the first one.

yeah we are those guys, but we are also the guys pissed about everything that is going on. here is a place to vent, to let off some steam, write a rant, piss on the illegals etc etc. If we were to say a lot of the stuff and the media gets hold of it all of a sudden we are racist, anti-immigration, right winged terrorists, gun toting rednecks, etc etc etc.

Well, I'll put it this way, when I first became associated with this endeavor, it was a small board with less than 10 users on it. Tucked away in the recesses of the MSM communities. Think I was the 7th or 8th member to sign up. Out of the "original 10" Roger and I (Sounds like a bad Mikey Moore movie.) may be the only ones left.. The COAR "monthly shoots" consisted of me and one other guy heading up to Pawnee every 2-3 weeks. That was like 2002 or so, dang, has it really been that long....

I have thought of this as an extension of the old HS locker room.. The new kids show up and try and fit in. Some try too hard, and some integrate easily. Never really thought of "clicks" here, although, I would guess, it may be a little like life, one may tend to gravitate towards the "old friends" until the new guy is accepted.

Just remember, for the most part, there are a bunch of guys here. So, insults and jabs are going to be par for the course. Just need a grain of salt with everything. And, like the old locker room, now and then a newbie will show up all full of himself, and it will be a piranha feeding frenzy.. It's the internets man, serious bidness, seriously... [Tooth]

I'll chime in with another "it's the internet". You have no idea for the most part who your dealing with age, race, gender, politics, etc. You need to be a little thick skinned on any forum otherwise you'll take stuff way to seriously.
I've been out of work since March and my daily forum visits sometimes are the only thing that keeps me sane. Lots of great people on here and a lot of folks that step forward all the time if they can help another member.

Even when things devolve into a flame war, the temperature of the flames is lower. Hardly ever do you see someone indicted as Hitler or Stalin. Except theGinsue... [LOL]

Even the n00bs are generally treated well, as long as they don't try to be gungho know-it-all types.

I wouldn't let it bother you as the internet bully types are only bullies online . Not one person who was tried to push me around or be rude towards me on line , has ever had the balls to try that crap in person . Hell i have found people in the internet shooting world run there mouth more than most but at the same time , with out that gun they don't have what it takes to stand up a take a punch to the face . Why they are such big men with there gun or on line ??? Who knows ?? I do know where i come from being a bully will get you hurt and fast !!! There is always a bigger dog in the junkyard ( know what i mean). All i know is that If you just do your best to be respectful then you should have no problems .
As far as ar-15 goes well ... as a new person here all I can say is its a great place for buying / trading / selling and yes in the chat topics there are some clickish folks but all in all this is pretty dam good site.

I second what Marlin said. There's a great group of folks here. Mostly guys. You're gonna get some (OK, maybe more than some) locker room humor. Yes, we Bawlmer guys know all about english as a second language.

The only item that just sends me over the top is the lack of distinction on a "clip" vs a magazine. I don't comment when they are used incorrectly, but it does make me wonder about the person using the terms.

Colloqiaulism used to be a means of verbal conveyance between people of whom origins were shared. Now it's a universal theme such as the "texting language".

I even use the texting language myself, but I still try to stress that knowing how to use our language is a needed skill. Communicating can be very stressful if someone doesn't speak the same "language". That being said, most folks don't want to do business with some who seems illiterate.

Most common mistakes as we are aware:

Know and No
There, They're, and Their
Sense, Cents, and Scents
Pole, poll, pool
Clip versus Magazine
Double negatives in the positive
Droppin' "g's" and usin' "'s"
Lack of capitalization and/or punctuation

...et al, ad nasuem.

However, I don't mind being funny sometimes and showing my "ghetto-ness" and using slang, colloquialism, curse words, etc. But a newbie showing up and typing like a pre-pubesent gangsta' to where things just really don't make sense grates on me sometimes.... I know not why.

But I get over it. Sometimes I'll say something... sometimes I'll just say, "Yo homey, u's da fool!"

I've always wanted to get a "double g" (ghetto gangsta) and a business man to a negotiating table... I think it'd be a riot.

Someone brought up the shift-key usage as well...

You HAVE to use it.

if you don't, it seems like you're a tiny, meek voice in the wilderness just not wanting to use the shift key to capitalize proper nouns and other such verbage functions....

BUT IF YOU USE IT ALL THE TIME THEN IT SEEMS LIKE YOU ARE CONSTANTLY YELLING!!!!

1. I will continually attempt to use correct grammar and spelling, lest I be chastised for it. (And that doesn't bother me in the least. I think proper writing is headed down the tubes very quickly)

I've been here for a while now, and for the most part, it is the most civil of the forums I am on (maybe because we're all armed? [LOL]).

Not just armed but living close enough that being polite is a little more urgent than on the global gun forums.

I agree with you, OP.

Seems like some members are getting strung out over all these non-issues, and take it out on people who literally do not know any better, as they joined and are being verbally assaulted over their first post...

Everybody needs to stand back, take a breathe and pop a chill pill...

Coming into this thread late and have only read the first page of 4 pages of posts so far (@ 20 posts/page).

I strongly agree with the OP and Ridge.

There is the one thread in particular where I wasn't impressed by the reactions of some of our members here; even members I have a great deal of respect for. While the OP in that thread could have easily been a "scammer"/spammer, he could just as easily have been someone VERY new to participating in/viewing online forums (as his second post stated). Because of this, I (personally) chose to err on the side of caution and treat that OP with dignity and respect - the same way *I* was treated when I joined this site.

One of the greatest things I love about this site is something that it took me MONTHS to figure out, and that is that the members of this site don't (usually) go bashing folks for stupid questions or commetns --- at least not until the stupid poster is an established member here and the bashing is all good natured ribbing.

Sure, look at my post count and the length of time I've been a member and you'd be hard pressed to realize that I waited MONTHS before posting because I was afraid (yeah, me - afraid) of showing my ignorance about AR's and the proper etiquette used in online forums. I've been active on several other forums, but the rules of etiquette on each site are different.

I've been bashed on ARFCOM for asking a legitimate question to reduce my ignorance. I've been belittled and made to feel absolutely unwelcome at many sites, but this site is supposed to be different. We have a "New Member Sign In" forum where we welcome new members with open arms, but if someone fails to post there first and they post something in another forum that seems a bit "off" to some of us we attack that person instead of offering gentle corrective advice? That's not the site I thought this place was.

I'm seeing the use of more and more profane language here too. Really? Why is that necessary? This used to be something of a family friendly site. Some of the stuff I'm seeing here would make me want to keep my wife from every viewing these pages out of sheer embarassment. Would all of you be proud to let your grandmother read what you've posted? Probably not.

Don't get me wrong, I can cuss with the best of 'em. I really tried to watch my mouth on Sunday @ the Dragonmans shoot like I watch it (mostly) here out of respect for all of you. After 20 years active duty and playing USAF cop part of that time, working with Marines, etc. I've picked up some really foul speech. I know that I'll even get a bit riske' in my posts. The real me could spew vulgarities out of my mouth enough to walk into a bar and have sailors come running out minutes later. But there is a time and a place for everything. I don't think it belongs here. Just sayin'.

So, whatdoya say? Can we try to keep from running off new and existing members and get this site back to the friendly and decent site it has always been?

Just my $0.02. Think about it a bit.

As a newbie I was guilty of dragging up an old for sale ad and asking if it was still for sale. I got razed, but in my defense, the ad was never posted as sold withdrawn or otherwise identified as no longer available.
But in the mentioned post from a newbie the offender that jumped down his throat and recommended a 50 post minimum before being allowed into the for sale threads only had 75 posts himself.
So maybe we should make a minimum of 100+ posts. How do you feel about that ?

Off Topic-
I for one nominate "SideShowBob" be declared "Retired" and "TrunkMonkey" used instead.

On topic-
I know I dont have good table manners. I have long been known for candor and lack of tact. I have a harsh and sarcastic sense of humor. I have worked in too many industries too long where colorful adjectives and such are the same as breathing. I have always been one of the "If you dont like it, GTFO" folks.
But here online it is easy to forget that those we communicate with don't live in the same off-line world as we do, come from the same backgrounds or have the same experiences we do.
If I may be a bit less than PC and if it offends you I offer two things:
1- Sorry if it offends you.
2- Get over it, this is a firearms forum and not "Mom's Like Me" or such. Most firearms afficianados are not the warmest and fuzziest people, rather they are no BS and to the point.
I think we can all agree if a new member comes in, pays attention and ask's honest questions they will get honest answers and treated well.
But if somebody comes in here peeing on post's, being a knucklehead in the Trading Post etc you reap what you sow.......

My current supervisor had a good way of putting it after noticing a bit too much candor in the entire crew. He reminded us of when you are training a horse that sometimes spurs are used as a gentle "reminder" for the horse to behave as he wanted. He held up a spur. He said he didnt want to resort to using Texas rowells with us.

Well put and when somebody is a bit too candid he just says: Spurs....
A good reminder.

I have a spur sitting on my speaker at work..................

One particular thing I do agree with Ginsue on - language. I'm no stranger to some of the most creative uses of English I know of, but it doesn't mean I necessarily want to be seeing it constantly on here. I don't buy the "If you don't like it, GTFO" routine, or the "Gun folks talk like that" either. Military folks have always been famous for it, but that's getting calmed down these days too. I am guilty of occasionally using words of that sort to emphasize when I'm really hot about something, but I do try to limit it. I can't always keep my boy from seeing what I'm reading on here, and just because someone doesn't want to bother not using really nasty language to me isn't acceptable. Seriously, is there any particular reason, other than you want to, for constant use of profanity? Nobody has to agree, this is just my opinion, and you know about those....[ROFL1]

My prior post was perhaps hard to follow because I had 10000 different things going on while I was trying to type it and it came out convoluted.

I am probably one of the worst as far as being "Politically Correct" and I am generally one of the "you don't like it GTFO" people. I tend to say what I feel and don't mince too many words. But if I do get a bit randy 99% it is in good humor and tongue in cheek.
But I also understand that not all feel this way and don't share the same views or come from the same backgrounds or have the same sense of humor as I. I do try to keep that in mind hence the "spurs" reference.
I try to stay as PC as I can but do slip a bit. But in the same breath I feel that some are thin skinned. One comes on to a firearms forum and get offended by a bit of blue humor.
I don't want to see this forum turn into ARFCOM as the Ginsue mentioned, it is a total turn off any more and I only go over there to find some technical info for the most part.
But as well it doesn't need to turn into"Namby Pamby" land either.

I wasn't specifically referencing you, BP, although looking at it I can see why you could think so. I don't think you're bad about this sort of thing. For that matter, most here aren't. I'm not particularly thin skinned; 24 years in the military took care of that! I just thought those were good examples you had used.
And Tricavscout, if you read my post I'm not saying that I think everyone should keep this a 100% profanity free site, either. I'm saying, is there any reason anyone has to cuss constantly in their posts? F*** this and what the F*** is up with that S***, that stupid a**hat - type posts may be what someone would say ordinarily, but I don't really like hearing that all the time; real life or otherwise. Some people talk that way constantly, it doesn't make it right. Now if I was saying that nobody should ever post vulgar words, yeah, I think that would be way out in left field, and unreasonable. I don't think that saying I don't really like to see that stuff used as punctuation, is unreasonable. And as I said, nobody has to agree. Just my opinion. If you don't like it, that's your right.

Yes! Our culture glorifies the personality of "unique badness". For example, just look at the entertainment industry. It is against known moral standing to constantly curse, so people push the envelope thinking they are being independant of the norm and bringing their own personality to bear. However, when everyone does it... it is no longer unique or personal....

Anyways, did you know back in the Dark ages and before the F word was an acronym? F.U.C.K was a command sent by the King for his troops to replenish their losses. Fornication Under Charge of the King. Basically, it would give his troops free reign to fornicate with whomever so that they could rebuild troop strength for future battles. Interesting huh? Gives a whole new meaning to "F*** You" doesn't it?

I personally find myself cussing and try hard to curb it. In situations where cuss words aren't even needed, I take a step back and think of how stupid I sound. "I couldn't come up with a better word than that? Come on." I tell myself stuff like that. Honestly I think everyone would benefit from cussing less, being more positive and not being so quick to find faults in others. I'm reminded of a quote:

When you lose patience with a person, it is not his mistake for failing to live up to your expectation, but rather your need for further insight into yourself.
