The Galil and the FNC are new and improved versions, will the Russians copy them or go to a completely new rifle design?

Whatever direction the Russians take they'll have to make a weapon that a drunk conscript can operate successfully.

I would think the existing design could be updated to be more accurate and not lose the ability to function as well as it has for years. But what do I know?

Maybe Russia should buy up all those Garands that Obama turned down from Korea? was it?

Yeah...caught that story yesterday, a bit interesting. Have to assume this plan to be a "kick in the gut" for a lot of the legacy Russian military folks though. Akin to our own transition to the M16 platform and even moreso, the furor around the 1911 sunsetting. I'd react negatively too I think, at least initially.

"...morally outdated..." Unique characterization...

Yeah, they really should replace their AKs with something cheaper to produce, simpler to maintain, and with greater reliability.....

Why no mention of the 74?

Why no mention of the 74?

I would assume that he means all Kalashnikov designs, -47, -74, and the 100 series.

I don't see it as very likely that the Russkies will buy a redesigned, rechambered AK from the Israelis. Why would they dump all their millions of AKs just to buy slightly different AKs in 5.56? Same goes for the French FAMAS (because who really does use them?[ROFL1]) or the SA80. National pride and all...

I actually think they are more likely to spend billions of rubles developing and testing a completely new rifle and completely new round, then make unsubstantiated claims that it will shoot 10k yards, have no noticeable drop, and will penetrate tank armor, all while being self-cleaning.[ROFL1]

Or, they can just blow their 2011 military budget and get a few hundred ACRs or SCARs[Tooth]

Side note, what the hell is the German G1 rifle...does the writer mean the G3 or what?

The Germans bought a bunch of FN-FALs in the mid '50s. They were designated G1.

I would think the writer was referring to the G3 though.

I would be furious if I was a Russian. The AK platform is a source of national pride, and they haven't made a bad series yet. I believe "morally outdated" refers to the use of AK's by every group of evil known to man, and maybe since Russia is trying to warm up to the EU they are trying to separate themselves from their weapon exporting past. I'm really doubting they will go with another nation's weapon, but I do suspect they will be converting over to 5.56.

all i know is that I love Aks. even the cheap rommy builds and awesome. I refinished the wood on one and it looks badass.

my yugo is downright tactically cool, and the drago pistols are sweet!
