The time has come and uncle sam is giving me some tax money back.
My problem is my current rig is pretty old and I am out of the current info loop on whats best. I play FPS and the wife surfs the net on the computer. I plan to buy parts from new egg unless someone else can tell me a better place. SO the great debate of Intel vs AMD and what mobo and video card(s) are best. Also, do I need cross fire if im not doing multiple monitors? will it help me frames per sec. etc. while gaming? Please, help me out here! Thanks,Dan[Bang]
Go buy the cheapest puter out there and spend the rest on ps3. You'll never pay puter games again.[Beer]

IMO . . If you're going to build your own rig you should join a forum like Guru3D.com before making your final decision. You're going to get 100 different opinions from 100 different people. Do your research and form your own opinion based on what you want.
I've always been an Intel guy but my buddy swears by AMD. I've got the i7 920 at stock settings and it's been great for any game I've thrown at it. Sounds like maybe you're leaning towards Radeon graphics cards since you mentioned crossfire. I made the switch to Nvidia with this build and do not have 2 cards in SLI. I run 2 monitors and it does fine. To make it simple just make sure your graphics card has 2 outputs that can accomodate 2 monitors. That being said, I only run my games on 1 monitor as opposed to split screen so maybe you do need 2 cards for split.
The places I cross checked the cost of components were NewEgg, Tiger Direct, and that Micro Center store here in Denver. I ended up getting most of everything from NewEgg but a few things were much much cheaper at the other places.

Uhhhh. I have to completely disagree. I guess that's the great thing about opinions. The computer is king when it comes to FPS games.

Ohh which car is better Ford Chevy or Dodge
Buddy of mine said Imports are the way to go, Maybe Mitsubishi, BMW or Lexus...
anymore its a crapshoot of opinions and variables.
Do I Need 4 HD5750s in crossfire, do I need 2 quadcores, Should I Get 4 terabyte SSDs in raid 1 + 0, when I buy 40GB Memory do I have to get the aluminum fins? is 4x2GB better than 8x1GB?
... all so confusing.
fer chrissakes do NOT call some "Builder" and order one.
you will wind up buying more than you need unless of course you need a bleeding edge machine so far ahead of technology that they wont have software for it until well after the apocalypse.
and of course they will be more than happy to separate you from $10Gs
Do lots of research, read allot, get what you need for what you do and what you can pay for.
You aren't going to find a more honest, unbiased answer.
have byte stryke build you one. you will not be disappointed, the price will be excellent and it can be fit to do whatever you want it to do.
once this old beast I am typing on now drops dead (byte has brought it back twice now), he will be building my next one whether he likes it or not![ROFL1]
before you do anything, talk to him and tell him what you want it to do and get the price. it will do what you need and you won't have to talk to some idiot overseas who says their name is "bob", you can't understand, and the customer service is questionable at least.

I Offered advice. he has my number.
He needs to make decisions.
I went the same route a lot of people are going with firearms these days. I found someone who built a $2K machine off of newegg and needed money so they sold it for $1K a month later. Even pricing out the parts now it would run me about $1500 to build the same thing.
If you have the knowledge to build your own it’s pretty easy to check out a used system and make sure everything is working the way it should. If you need an OS and plan to go the Windows route use the Systems builder pack. Works great and you can swap just about everything but the motherboard if needed.
