DISCLAIMER: Not sure how accurate the story behind this is, but it works for me...

The attached video was filmed by some Air Force Joint Tactical Air Controllers (JTAC) in Tal Afar, west of Mosul in Iraq .A marine unit got pinned down in the street. They set their videocamera on the bumper of their armored HUM-V, which they were usingfor cover.Keep an eye on the opposing van parked just down the street. On theaudio you can hear them shooting back and forth. The rounds you canhear are from the Marines, and the ones you hear pinging against theside of the vehicle with no accompanying pop are from the bad guys. When the Marine says they just fired the "rifle," it means an F-16aircraft just launched a Maverick missile. You can hear it come in andsee it strike the green/blue vehicle the bad guys were using for cover.Talk about pinpoint accuracy! End of story...for the bad guys.Listen for the word "rifle" and thenlisten for the pinging of incoming rounds hitting the armored vehicle.

Dear Penthouse,

You won't believe what happened. I never thought this could happen to me, but it did. There I was, shooting at the infidel invaders down the street. We had them outnumbered and pinned down; Akmed, Mustafa and I were joking about all of the shoes we had saved up to throw at them - when suddenly there was a bright flash of light and I found myself surrounded by 72 virgins!

This is about 5 years old.

Anything over 8 inches is considered a miss by the USAF with guided munitions. When I left the HQ Element in my first tour in 04, we were running between 98-99 percent accuracy.

As nice as the fast movers are, with the accuracy of their precision guided munitions, I MUCH prefer the "ugly" slow-moving A-10. To me, having a pair of them overhead is a beautiful sight.

I wish they could put some of the targeting pod footage I got to see from our deployments over there on youtube...positively inspirational.[Beer]

Each time I was there, about every 2-3 weeks they'd have a briefing for us and show us the highlights since the last brief. It consisted of watching about 20-30 minutes of footage from the targeting pods on the fighters as well as the material from the predators, and once in a while some footage from an AC-130.

Talk about motivational material. Nobody cared about the heat or bugs for a few days afterward.

Yeah, who needs viagra after watching those! [ROFL1]

+1. I grew up in southern AZ and got to watch them all the time fly overhead. And the sound of the cannon is one of the coolest (and scariest) sounds in the world.

I Love the comment.
I quoted yours because in NC we used to have AC-130s fly over allot.

Puff was the Nickname given the AC-130 during Viet-Nam

The AC-130 gunship has a combat history dating to Vietnam where it was humorously known as "Puff the Magic Dragon." Gunships destroyed more than 10,000 trucks and were credited with many crucial close air support missions. During Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada in 1983, AC-130s suppressed enemy air defense systems and attacked ground forces enabling the successful assault of the Point Salines Airfield via airdrop and air land of friendly forces. The AC130 aircrew earned the Lt. Gen. William H. Tunner Award for the mission. http://www.battle-fleet.com/pw/his/c130.htm

I must say I am going to miss the gun ships going off at night out here. There's nothing more comforting than hearing that howitzer turn someone into red ramadan jelly. And seeing the flash is pretty sweet from down here too!
