Dugway Army base on lockdown

DUGWAY -- The U.S. Army's Dugway Proving Ground was on lockdown Wednesday evening as part of "an ongoing security operation," according to spokeswoman Paula Thomas.

Reports of nearly 1,000 employees stranded at the base, some in their cars, went unconfirmed but Dugway Proving Ground Commander Col. William E. King, IV, said food and beverages were being brought in.

"As you know measures like these (lockdown of our gates) are not taken lightly," he said. "No one is in immediate danger but these steps are required." King said he would open the gates "as soon as I can."

The gates to the facility were closed prior to the 5:30 p.m. shift ending. Workers normally scheduled to go home were not allowed to leave, while those coming into the area were also not let in.

Dugway encompasses more than 800,000 acres of Utah's west desert, where more than 2,000 people call home. It is a government-owned facility used by the U.S. Army Reserves and the U.S. National Guard for maneuver training. It is also a U.S. Army Test and Evaluation Command center where tests are occasionally run on defenses against biological and chemical weaponry.

This is where they store the VX gas cannisters along with other chemical weapons. One rumor among the base personel's family members on FB is that they are recounting the inventory of chemical weapon. Does that mean at least one is missing???

no, you're thinking of area 51, where they keep and exploit the extra terrestrial horrors.

The military said in a statement Thursday the amount missing was less than one fourth of a teaspoon of VX nerve agent, which affects the body’s ability to carry messages through the nerves.

The missing vial prompted a lockdown late Wednesday afternoon that lasted until the agent was found early Thursday.

Had some action on Schriever AFB on Wednesday - just part of which was a Security Forces officer accidentally shot himself in the foot with his M9.

I'll edit this post with details after I get some sleep.

ETA:

After getting some sleep) okay, lots of sleep...
So, this Security Forces Airman accidentally shoots himself in the foot with his M9. The official story is that he tripped and the firearm (which by USAF policy has a loaded chamber and the safety is off), discharged a round into his foot. I've tried to semi-re-enact this with my gear and could not get my foot to sit in directly line with the muzzle of the gun while still in the holster. Hmmm.

Now, on to the next event. As I was coming into the base Thursday to I heard on the radio how on Wednesday there had been a threat made via "electronic medium" to 2 families living in base housing @ Schriever. These families have kids in the Ellicot schools, so the schools got locked down. All SF members are recalled and every inch of the base is searched with SF members and dogs, etc. into the wee hours of the morning. By the next morning they find that the whole deal with the threats was actually a hoax perpetrated by a female Airman ~ somrthing about an extramarital affair or something. This whole hoax cost lots of money and inconveinenced hundreds (lets also consider that every contractor on base remained "on the clock" for the 2 hours they weren't allowed off of the base). Last I heard, this female airman was taking a vacation in the El Paso County Detention Facility. Once they're done with her she'll get to face the military judicial system.

Never a dull moment.
