View Full Version : What Is The Attraction of the AR15???
I have own guns at different times of my life and I first fired a M16 in 1966 and really liked it for many reasons. The last time I had fired one was in 1971. A lot of years went by and I got my LMT AR15 in Dec.2010. I have always wanted one but I was to busy but I always wanted one. What is your reason to own a AR15, what is the mystic? For me it was like when I got a Corvette.[Pepsi]

The versatile platform is what got me into owning mine. There's just soooo much you can do with them to make them fit your needs and customize to your liking.[Beer]

I thought it was because the chicks dig it....
I thought it was because the chicks dig it....
It's a rifle that reasonably powerful and light enough for her to be able to shoot it.
bang,bang,bang,bang,bang,bang......hit,hit,hit,hit ,hit,hit.............[AR15]Today's Ar-15's are very accurate, great for varmint hunting.
Once you go black,............. you know the rest.[Tooth]
Because I wanted to "fit in" on this forum. [ROFL1]
I would have to say Platform and ease of use (no M1 thumb with an ar TG!).

No, it's because mother-in-laws hate it.[ROFL2]
I got one just because. Still not my favorite rifle.

100 pounds of cool in a 6 pound package. Classically American...like owning a Harley only a LOT cheaper.
already had an AK, had to get an AR for balance
The amazing speed at which you can throw lead down range w/o a machine gun.

Light, accurate, semi-auto, fun to shoot, nice balance between a powerful round and cheap, flat trajectory, did I mention fun?, almost no recoil, can pop off rounds quick and get mostly hits on a piece of steel.
Playing America's Army
no, seriously...
I got one cause it said 'assault rifle' on the news.. I thought for sure it would assault people.. I'm rather disappointed in the guns inability to kill people.. I left it out on the porch for days... and not one single assault. [Mad]
I think it's defective... [Stooge]

I needed to get a gun larger than .22LR, and was looking at Mini-14's and researching AR15's. A friend persuaded me to get the AR15. So I did, and glad I did. Another friend has a Mini-14, it works good, but to find cool parts and pieces for it just isn't cheap or easy. AR15, as the say, Barbie for men. Glad I made the choice.

For me, its all about adaptability. I'm all about customizing my crap... never owned a vehicle that I left stock, my laptop is all hot rodded, even my watch is one-off.
The AR platform can do so many things its difficult to wrap your head around... there are a handful of different lowers and uppers in various calibers available to build off of, and countless parts to add on em. You can build a badass 5.56 SBR with an EOTech holo sight, and then build another with a precision stock and a 20" barrel chambered for .308 topped off with a 3x9 optic. One platform, so many options... you can do whatever you want to it.

An FYI the mini 14 is a good reliable rifle! But it does'nt have near the accuracy as the AR-15 and not even close to the accessories available for the AR!! [UZI]
AR's are so popular, I almost don't even want one. Almost.

I used to have one, it was lost in a tragic tree chipper incident however.[Muaha]
I shot my first AR about 25 years ago. Hooked ever since. I used to be into blackpowder rifles big time, built my first one at 14. I was up at the range that used to be off of Hwy 7 one day and a guy was next to me with an AR. He must of noticed me watching him(maybe he noticed me drooling or something) and asked me if I wanted to run a mag through it. I did and a couple of weeks later bought my first one along with an AK from the Gun Room when it was at 10th and Broadway. Spent a whopping 650.00 bucks.
I think some of the attributes that make it so popular are:
It's America's rifle.
Mild recoil
Inexpensive (used to be anyways)
Accurate
Lightweight (unless you crap it up with every TactiFool thing you can hang on it)
Versatile
Easily personalized by most anybody that does not breath through their mouth and can annunciate multi syllable words.
Pisses off the FUDDS when your 14 yo outshoots them with their 3K Weatherby's
Pisses off the namby pamby granola eating crowd
Makes the Politcos nervous
You never get bored with them, want a different configuration? Push two pins and Viola', you have your "new" rifle.
The largest upshot to the AR-15 is that it's not just an individual gun, but a standardized platform that can be used to build a wide variety of guns, from tactical to long range, in calibers from .22 all the way up to .500.
I wanted one because I thought it was a good gun. I think there are a lot better designs available now. The ergonomics are what kills it for me. Too many of the controls are in the wrong place. It was leading edge in the 60's when Eugene Stoner designed it, but today we have things like the FN-SCAR, the Bushmaster ACR, and the FN FS2000 that have much better ergonomics.
My two cents! Your mileage may vary. Objects in rear view mirror are closer than they appear. I am not a lawyer.

Actually discussed this with my Son GeoSweaper yesterday.
Parts...
Fun Rifle with a HUGE interchangeability of parts from a few dozen different manufacturers.
I Don't have to worry that this particular rifle requires special parts made only by this manufacturer.
Allot like the 1911
Reliable standardized platform for the win
I'm so ashamed I don't have one yet.
But I have to agree it's pretty much the "coolest"(everytime I hear that word it reminds me of the chubby kid in Billy madison..lol) rifle to own.
That and an AK/varient.
But that is like Ford vs Chevy lol.
I will definitely look here first when it's time to buy or have all you gents help me build one.
[Beer]
So much fun to shoot when they are dialed in correctly.
all I can say is the AR-15 has the BOING!!!!!! factor going, so awesome to shoot and wicked customizable
