So, the "No Tolerance" weapons policies we so often hear about in public schools do not apply to some religions. Why am I not surprised?

Apparently, if you're part of a minority religion, it's OK to bring your dagger (http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/02/01/michigan-school-district-allows-sikh-students-wear-religious-dagger-school/) to school.

Michigan School District Allows Sikh Students to Wear Religious Dagger to School

http://a57.foxnews.com/static/managed/img/Scitech/397/224/kirpan.JPG

A Detroit-area district says it's allowing Sikh students to wear a small, religious dagger to school, MyFoxDetroit.com reports.
The decision by the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools reverses a ban put in place in December after a fourth-grader at a Canton Township elementary school was found with a dull, 3- to 5-inch kirpan.
The kirpan represents a commitment to fight evil in the Sikh tradition. The dagger is a religious symbol that baptized Sikh males are expected to carry.
The principal initially let the boy keep the kirpan, but the school board instituted a ban because of parental concerns and conflicts with the district's rules against bringing weapons to school.
The Detroit Free Press and WXYZ-TV report that under the new guidelines, kirpans meeting certain criteria will be allowed for Sikh students.

Any of your naysayers about the threat of Islam becoming a "believer" yet?

If YOUR kids so much as take a plastic butter knife to school they will be expelled and possibly even arrested, but this is okay?

I have been saying for years...people need to keep religion to themselves, in thier place of worship, home etc.

seiks arent mooslim.

Christians have allways ruled the US. And they wanted school prayers, ten commandments placed in prominent positions, etc. Well, everyone can hopefully see why religion, isnt good in a public arena. Its all great when your religion is the majority. But, when mooslims start to want prayer time 5 times a day in school, business, etc. When they have thier shoes off and prayer mats out 5 times aday. When they have the pillars of Islam posted on the court house walls and school halls. Then maybe people will wake up. I have allways been very religious. I went to a Christian school for years. But, if you dont want thier religion shoved down your throat, then think about it.

sikhism,
A progressive religion well ahead of its time when it was founded over 500 years ago, The Sikh religion today has a following of over 20 million people worldwide and is ranked as the worlds 5th largest religion. Sikhism preaches a message of devotion and remembrance of God at all times, truthful living, equality of mankind and denounces superstitions and blind rituals. Sikhism is open to all through the teachings of its 10 Gurus enshrined in the Sikh Holy Book and Living Guru, Sri Guru Granth Sahib.

I'm more annoyed that the Sikhs had to resort to First Amendment arguments to carry that pissant little thing to school. Once upon a time, pocketknives were considered a normal everyday tool, not a ** shock ** weapon! I'm annoyed more by the New Age NEA-type teachers and school administrators who want to practice their Maoist indoctrination but practice a zero-tolerance "weapons" policy and penalize Eagle Scouts and kids bringing a kitchen knife for a birthday cake.

Maybe the schools should be allowed to expel the psychos and gangbangers instead of taking their frustrations out on law-abiding people?

Maybe I should make a case for my religion, which requires all males over the age of 9 to carry a 1911 in Condition One as a reminder to oppose evil....

So... does this mean that I can now bring my ancestral Claymore to school? I am from Scottish ancestry. (The "Claymore" is a traditional Scottish broadsword, usually with a two handed hold.)

If they don't let me, can't I call them racist?[Shield]

My religion allows me to pray and learn about Jesus, but that's not allowed at school. Bet if that dagger had a cross on it, it wouldnt be allowed.

as has been pointed out, sikhs aren't muslims.

also, I've seen lots of sikhs but I've never seen any of them wearing knives.

but the point of the thread is still valid. they expel kids for having a steak knife in their trunk, they should expel a kid for wearing a knife because waheguru said so.

Ok this really pisses me off. I used to bagpipe for Denver Youth Pipe and Drum and St.Patties day several years ago i wore my whole get-up to my high school as i was playing after class. If you aren't aware the traditional wear of the kilt includes wearing a dirk (a small knife) on your calf with the handle exposed. I was sent home for displaying a dangerous weapon. WTF

they can wear the knife (kirpan) under their garments. it doesnt have to be exposed. also there is no size restrictions. so it can be very little and coverable or a large sword size for ceremonies.

Rgr dodger. Depending on your role you could have three!

1 - dagger in the sock
2 - shortsword/dagger on the belt
3 - short/long sword in hand (scabbard lowhang from back) as part of honor guard

If you ever get the chance during the summer, we all should go up to Estes to the Scottish Highland games. Some of the knife throwing and mock knife fighting are GREAT!!!

Eliminate public education and everyone can choose to attend school of choice and observe whatever traditions/faiths/beliefs they like.

Pretty simple.

Get govt out of education and make parents responsible for kids education.
