View Full Version : Shpping Out of State

I have a rifle that I've been having a hard time finding a buyer for, and I recently was contacted by an FFL in Connecticut who said he'd take it if I'd ship it. I don't have any reason to doubt the legitimacy of the deal or what he's saying, but I just wanted to toss this out here to see if anything glaring stands out as an issue. Ya know, just wanna make sure my arse it covered. I basically wanted to know what I had to do on my end; he wanted the serial number (I sent him: 078xxx), and then a color copy of my license. Here's where's it's at with the last message from him:
"Procedure:
1. I send you 2 postal money orders (which are good as cash at any post office) along with our FFL
2. You send me rifle along with a color copy of your state ID or Driver lic.
3. Thats it.
I can send you a label if you give me box dimensions and weight. If not I will include 25.00 extra to cover the qoutes you provided.
Does this sound doable to you?"
Not sure what he needs my DL for, but whatever. What I wanted to be sure from the experts here is that its okay for me to just stick a rifle into a box and ship it UPS to an FFL without any paperwork, etc? Anything I should be concerned with here? Thanks.

The FFLs that will receive items from individuals require a copy of your DL and a copy of the FFL enclosed in the shipment, might be an ATF or shippers regulation. $ 25 for shipping sounds like you are gettig shorted, I think you must overnight if a non FFL is shipping a firearm to a FFL. If he is offering to send you a shipping label take advantage of that. Also you need to take the package to the shippers hub, not to the local corner UPS retail center.
Someone with more knowlege should be along right about. Now.

Including a copy of your DL is pretty standard fare for an out of state transaction. The receiving FFL has to log in the firearm as an "acquisition". If your SSN is on the DL black it out.
I would include the caveat that the rifle will be shipped upon verification and clearance of funds. Postal Money Orders are one of the most frequently forged financial documents of late.
Aside from that it sounds fairly kosher.
As far as the shipping end if he is willing to send a pre-paid label to you then that is a good deal for you. Make sure that it is insured at a fair replacement value. If you have to cover the shipping and such you are probably closer to 40.00 or so. You do not have to "overnight" a long arm.

I was looking for this- BPTactical covered it, just thought I'd mention that "overnight" is required for handguns... that's probably why Bob thought it was a requirement.

For shipping the package is 12lbs, and the UPS site quoted me $16. Why would you all think it will be $40+? Do I have to tell the UPS agent, or just hand them the box with the paperwork inside?
I've managed to stay 100% off the grid with all my arms so far; mailing this rifle to an FFL is going to change all that, isn't? Maybe its time to just throw away my tin-foil hat? [Tooth]

The shipping sounds awfully low- does that include insurance and priority shipping? You don't have to overnight it unless it is a HG as noted but I personally like to get firearms there as quickly as I can. The last firearm I shipped was to Pennsylvania and for 1500 in insurance and 3-5 day shipping it was 42.00 IIRC.
Tinfoil hats are useless anymore- we are all on the "Grid" in one way or another buddy.

i just hand the UPS guy / gal the package with UPS label, a copy of the FFL who the firearm is going to. pay, get receipt and leave. I do over insure it Then e-m and call the buyer with shipping info.
I do insist on a 3 day inspection . this gives you as a seller or buyer protection in case item was not as listed on sale forum.
UPS OOPS lost an FN i sent to a ban state few years back. It showed me item was delivered yet no one from the dealer had signed or received anything. I contacted UPS and asked for signature confirmation copy. They basically said a mistake was made and blew me off. Asked for their supervisor who gave me the run around saying a lost firearm was bound to turn up. Once i mentioned the next call was to ATF the mgr said give me 1/2 hour and will call me back. Funny how quickly they located the rifle, Still on the truck.

They asked what was in the package. They asked everyone in line what was in the package. I said sporting goods.
http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/unlicensed-persons.html more information for you. if you need it.
"Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm".
There isn't a form; you just tell the dude at the counter its a "sporting goods"?

Holy, cow..your going to ship a rifle to someone in CT...why??? with your attitude toward my post you made it seem as if only people in CO can frequent this forum
the sign at the ups distribution center, said no firearms can be shipped. at their website it said this is where you could ship it. it was the actual UPS run building where the trucks are parked and all. it was packed up and there was a long line of people and I didnt want to have a fight over it.
This is what I always run into. Nobody wants to ship it.

Have your tried FedEx? I use the depot off of Havana and they are civilized. They actually seem to be pleased to take money from me, even when I walk in with Uline rifle boxes.

Err, "Postal Money Orders" Who in the hell uses those anymore? I haven't used a PMO since the 80's. I know some people hate them but even PayPal offers a shit load more protection. How about a bank draft/check? I have a copy of my dealers FFL (up in Highlands Ranch) if I were a crook I could forge that to look like it was my FFL. Just sayin man, that is a BIG oh shit moment. Could be 99% real, but 1%? Ya know what I mean? BTW I get offers on craigslist asking if they could send me a PMO etc, etc, etc. One of the biggest scams on CL.

And why "2 postal Money Orders"? One is not good enough? Over 1000 bucks? Just asking? I got ripped off by a good friend last year so I'm a little bit suspicious of everybody now a days. Sorry

Sorry I didn't know about PayPal's policy's (that's a mouth full). I'm just saying with a reputable dealer I would think they would have a better way to pay. As my wife would say "I'm probably wrong". I'm not endorsing them but gunbroker.com uses a escrow site for purchases (if you choose). My only dealings with out of state is buying not selling. The last thing I would want is to have to go to my local LEO and tell them what happened. And, yes, I'm new to THIS board. Hi

Tell paypal that you are using them for the sale and or transfer of a firearm.
Let it come out in a dispute.
Accounts have been locked and seized for years.
PMO
Just my 2 cents

Ding, schools out. I didn't know. Thanks. Presumably, gun sales are keeping the post office in business:D
USPS money order is good to go.
tell him you will hold the rifle until the cash. I have seen fake ones before and that procedure has saved me a hell of a lot of work and headache.
he would need to send 2 if it is over $1000, as that is the max allowed per USPS.
he needs to send a signed copy of his FFL. I would verify it with ATF as well.
USPS will ship rifles. fedex and UPS will also ship firearms. have copy of the FFL you are sending it to so they can verify the address.
other than that I think you should be good to go.
I would insure it as well (have him pay for it) or make the disclaimer that you aren't responsible if they lose it and it isn't insured.

there are other websites out there too...you should check into those. this is a Colorado site. pretty much exclusively colorado people and dealers. the few out of staters either moved here and didn't change their status or moved out of state and still like to talk to us since it is a close knit forum.
