View Full Version : IWB, trying to keep it put

Any thoughts to keeping these from trying to pull your pants down just a bit. Tighter belt, uncomfortable (need an infinite adjustable belt to try I think) But even with a sub 2lb'r in there, just try's to tug down a little.
Also, sweating against the leather. Thoughts of moleskin, and non-smooth leather against the skid are both thoughts on this.
Anyone have things theyve tried that work well?

Wear a wife beater T shirt between your body and holster for the sweating issue. And get a stiff belt designed for holster carry to help with the droopy drawers problem.

I'm still messing with my IWB solutions. Ruger LCR, $10 cheapo IWB from the gunshow has been working well for me, around a year or so now. I recently purchased a Galco IWB for the same weapon, but I haven't made a decision on it yet, still trying to break in the good leather to make it wear correctly.
I just up-sized my jeans and belt so I can try to carry my Sig P228 IWB more effectively, but still have issues with the larger gun as you are describing. I usually wear the belt pretty tight, and holster is at 5 o clock right hip.
I'll try one of the cross breed super tucks some day, people seem to like them.

way off the wall though, but spray on benzoin (sp?) works great for the sweat issue. Its what rodeo guys use on gloves to stiffen them. Kinda nice for a holster because it will waterproof it, and also will form to your hip like play dough. you can get it at most ranch supply stores. Just an out there thought that worked for me, thought I would pass it along
If your pants are pulling down, then they are probably too loose.

1" tighter, pretty uncomfortable, and fairly difficult to pull from holster.
MTAC holster, its broken in.
Undershirt works well, warmer weather on its way, 2 shirts, not going to work for me. Right now its great, warm weather, not so much.
Ive thought of moleskin stuck to the holster, old t-shirt or jean chunk sewn to it as well. Moleskin seems lowest maintaince. Likely just change it every few months Id guess.
I've rusted my gun twice now from sweating through the MTAC, but I don't really find it all that uncomfortable. How long have you been carrying? Maybe I'm just used to it.
I've always worn a wife beater shirt under all my clothes through any weather. I prefer that because my wife beater gets sweaty and sticks to me, while my other clothes stay nice and dry.
A good belt goes a looooooong way. I like wilderness and aker. A little zinc in the diet might help too. [Beer]

gun belt and suspenders
Another +1 for a dedicated gun belt.... It really does make a world of difference with pants falling down, lol.
And (I gotta ask), you ARE wearing your pants correctly right? I only ask cause I had a friend who likes to wear his baggy pants below his waistline.... It won't work while CC'ing....

Whats wrong with saggin homie? [ROFL3]
And yes, I look like a normal white guy, not a high school hoodlum!
Looking closer, I think the stiffer belt would help a ton. Normal 1.5" wide leather just isnt enough, its developing a droop there.
No concern about rusting, and worn for about a year, daily.
wilderness belts could cost twice what the do and they'd still be worth every penny.

+1 for Wilderness 5 stitch
I don't have my CCW yet but its the stiffest most comfortable belt I've ever worn.
buy yourself an oversized belt so that you can find the tightness comfortable to you, then you can make yourself a new hole. Tightness is important because you want comfort but also do not want your pants falling down but being able to draw as well. Also you need to find a good holster which I find can cost you the $$$ but they don't have to be hundreds of dollars. I find the crossbreed super truck IWB design is awesome. You can find different makes of that holster cheaper and it has the leather body protector that will form to your body and protect it. No issues with sweating or anything.

That's what I'm doing, I purchased another belt from walmart, Dickies Brand, pretty decent belts. The one I have is too small, and I bought a longer one, but its not enough yet to get good adjustment out of, so I'm taking that back and getting the next size up. Way longer than I normally need, but with the holsters and guns, I need the extra length.

I think a gun belt is critical, I have regular leather belts that used to be great that started to stretch after trying to tighten them up to work with a holster. I really like my Blackhawk nylon belt now, it keeps my nickers up and can adjust to my changing weight.
I am partial to my holsters (shocker!) but I think they carry well without shifting due to the wide platform. If you get a holster with good leather that's ready for sweat it it shouldn't be an issue. For example- the black leather I use is treated with a water repellent dye that makes it sweat tolerant. I don't wear undershirts under my IWB holsters and they (and my pistols) are fine.
That's my free, shameless plug. Take it for what it's worth :)
-Let me know if you want to give one of mine a whirl, if you don't like it I'll buy it back.

Here's an idea:
http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/clothes-workwear/mens/mens-belts-mens-suspenders/30543.aspx?feature=product_31
The suspenders go under your shirt if you do the normal untucked way of carry.
My belt has stretched so far that it doesn't even fit without my gun now. I have another belt that I can only get to the fattest possible setting on, because I never wear it and it hasn't stretched out. That one looks stupid because I only have a little nub left over since I have to use the last hole. Stupid dress belts. I need a real belt.
Also, if your holster isn't staying in the same spot, it's because there is only one contact point and you need two. You already said that you carried with an MTAC though, so I don't think that applies to you.

A real belt will go a long way toward your comfort. And no, you can't find a good belt at Walmart. For leather I'd go with one from The Beltman. I'm trying out a Liger belt now & it's different, but I think it will work out once I get used to it. If you're into the rigger's belt look the Wilderness & OSOE belts are good.
You will have to run the belt kind of tight. It's just a matter of getting used to it. Tighten it up for a few hours every day to get yourself used to it. You should be able to adjust the holster tension to make up for the extra belt tension.
I like the idea of the Wilderness belt, but I'm trying to decide if it is something that I could pull off wearing at work with a tucked in, button up shirt.

Irving, it would depend on the pants/shirt combo. Jeans or Carharts with a tucked in cotton polo or work shirt, maybe. Anything dressier & absolutely not. Think of it like wearing combat boots.

+1 on this I learned alot about this stuff rodeoing in HS and ever since then i benzoin damn near everything I own. But if anyone here wants to pursue this route there are a few things you oughta know so you dont f up your nice holster. Multiple coats are required to get any use outta it. Only buy "tincture of benzoin" any other variant will gum up when it gets warm enough. And it will darken the leather considerably (made my galco fletch a really dark red).

Thanks. I have a cheapo 5.11 belt that I like, but haven't been able to wear it for several months it doesn't go with anything. Any recommendations for gun belts that can pass as "dressy?"

The 1.5" belt will probably work well for you. If you want a little extra shine you can hit it with some Parade Gloss polish.
I have had good luck with a Wilderness belt, a wife beater and either a Comp-Tac Minotaur, Infidel, or a Kaluban Kloak.

I have one of these in the Carbon Fiber pattern. They have a Kydex core, but don't scream "I have a GUN!!!"

When I was looking, I was recommended TheBeltman.com and Wilderness belts. I went with the Wilderness because I'm cheap and it was nearly identical to the belt I was wearing already, which was a single layer nylon.

As far as holsters go, drop an E-mail to Rob Cerullo and ask him to send you a few pictures of his products. His address is: landsharkleather@gmail.com
< $60 shipped. Tell him Steam Boat recommended you.
I have 3 of his IWB holsters, and really like them.
Thanks guys.
Byte, when I wear pink heels, it's not usually with an outfit that is befitting of a dress belt. ;)

maybe try getting really tight boxers, then staple and duct tape them to your pants, but leaving a snug gap to fit your gun. you wont even want a belt!

I keep a 5'5" brunette PLASTERED to my hip at all times, nothing can slip past her.
But that aside...
I've found that pants make a big difference too. Everybody likes softer jeans, so the jean material used these days is actually softer and somewhat saggier.
I switched to buying 511 concealment pants, they dont sag. Like these
http://www.lapolicegear.com/511-tactical-covert-cargo-pants.html
I've tried their denim casuals too, but dont like the cut. The lower waistline of a pant contributes to sag also.
As far as belts go, I found a beltmaker on Ebay who will make a belt out of heavier leather for around 22 bucks with a brass buckle. I told him why and he suggested a higher poundage on the leather (equates to thickness) I have a very thick casual dress belt that doesn't come close to looking like a "tackytickle" item. That coupled with the 511 pants and my pants dont sag.
Oh, and I dont do IWB anymore - but my belt holster was having sage problems. The newer galco holster with a WIDE loop system helps distribute weight more evenly too, might help!

You trying to show me up by getting the more expensive one?
I use the crossbreed IWB horsehide with their belt. Carried a full size 1911 every day for two years with it. My office is outside. I carry it with just a t-shirt over the top in the summer. The leather and gun still get wet in the heat of summer, but it is comfortable.
I think the most important is a good belt. The crossbred is very thick but has broke in well.

I wear this holster from Tucker Gun Leather. It is nice because it has the softer type leather on the back. I have never had a problem with sweat with this one. Notice there is no hardware on the back to rub on your skin. The leather feels a lot like mole skin actually so maybe Mole Skin would work. These are expensive but they were one of the only holsters of this style when I got it many years ago.

I also have and like the Galco King Tuk (http://www.usgalco.com/ViewMorePic.asp?ProductSKU=KT212B) a lot and it is becoming my everyday holster as it gets broken in. The leather on th back isn't as soft as the Tucker but it's still pretty nice.
I've found the belt makes a huge difference when paired with a holster designed to distribute the weight properly.
I wear a Filson double 1 ½ and an 1 ¼ for dress slacks.

Since the OP is local - Check JAX as they sell both sizes in stock.
my new fav holster is the belly band i picked up for 14 bucks from cheaperthendirt.com it doesnt move around at all and there is no weight on my pants or belt whatsoever
Can not say too many good things about a good belt. Get one that is designed for CCW use and can stand weight of a handgun and couple of mags.
One thing to consider is IWB holster, that has belt loops far away from each other. I just love my Galco V-Hawk :)
