The U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court verdict ordering Arizona rancher Roger Barnett to pay damages of $87,000 for holding a group of undocumented immigrants at gunpoint.
The incident occurred in March 2004 when the gun-toting Barnett detained a group of 16 unauthorized immigrants -- none of them carrying weapons -- on public land near the border town of Douglas, Arizona.

As patriotic as he is, holding a group of people at gun point in public land will get ANYONE in trouble. They are making a sample out of this guy. Even if he could appeal and win, he will be spending way more in legal fees than $87k.

Sorry state of affairs when what should have happened is the judge ordering INS to reimburse the rancher for his time doing their work.

Has anyone got any other sources of news on this? The news article I read said that he "detained [four illegal immigrants] at gunpoint while they crossed his property" which sounds like a completely different story than this one, though it is clearly the same since it happened in Arizona and the award and awarding court was the same. When I read the line that they were on his property, it sounded in my article as though it had now become illegal to defend your own property and family. But the other story sounds as though they were on public land. Anyone got a third source--with the media, you gotta' have at least two out of three to even hope they got it essentially right!

I personally believe that everyone deserves some basic human rights, but beyond that, I don't believe that illegals deserve any of our Constitutionally and legislatively provided rights - these are for citizens, not aliens.

Byte called that one. There are a number of Hispanic "rights" organizations that insist that illegals have the same rights and protections that honest legal CITIZENS are entitled to.

Mopar!!, but with relevance to the topic, I believe that if they are not Citizens then they have none of the rights guaranteed by the constitution

It is so rampant because they have no fear of reprisal. They either make it or they get caught, sent back and they try again until they make it... so yeah; shoot them next time they invade private property.
