View Full Version : Why so long for Colorado CCW?

Years ago before governor Ritter, I decided to get a Utah CCW. At the time they were cheaper than the Colorado permit, and non-resident permits were valid in Colorado. Also, I didn't want to be listed in a criminal database in Colorado. Well Gov Ritter changed all that when he signed his order to not accept non-resident permits because they were not up to "Colorado's standards". Actually I believe that the Utah is more strict as you cannot have had an incident of moral turpitude, where Colorado's does not have that stipulation. My issue is that when I applied for the Utah permit, I had my permit in two weeks. I was told by Jefferson County Sheriff's Office that they would call me back in three months , then take my picture and print the permit. Three months! is there still a high demand for the permits? I get the impression that they want to stall as long as possible before letting a peasant carry a gun around. What do you guys think?

Drove me nuts too. Arizona took me 5 business days. PA non-resident, two weeks. They have 90 days by law and they take full advantage of that. I think they do it as a discouragement in some counties.

90 days is statutory. If they told you two weeks, you'd likely be on the phone bugging them every day. Ted Mink is pro 2A.

Weld county told me up to 90 days. They called me back in about a month. I didn't think that was an unnecessary long wait.

When I got mine in May of 07 through El Paso County, it only took about 2 1/2 weeks. Haven't checked with Arapahoe, I'll just renew through El Paso when the time comes.

Arapahoe county uses pretty much every day of the 90. But the renewal wait time, I don't know about so I will make sure to do it at least 90 days before it expires.
I don't think you can renew through El Paso county with an Arapahoe county address.

as I Understand it "Shall issue" States have 90 days before they must give you an answer.
Either they mis-spoke or you misunderstood that they will notify you within 90 days. Depending on the County, you can get in in a few weeks up to the whole 90 days.

I got mine in about 70-something

At least where I work, the couple of people who work on these are swamped and also have multiple other job responsibilities. Everyone makes assumptions as to why they take so long and nobody is really going to know except for those who are doing the work. Just a thought.

don't forget besides the local LE BG checking you they also have the feds take a peek.
majority of CO is 90 day wait as SOP. some have come back within 2-3 weeks others the full 90. YMMV
once you procure your CCW take a shot at something NFA. the process never ends but well worth it.

I had to do the fed bg check for the utah permit, so I'm not worried about anything with the bg check. Have you procured anything NFA? I know about the forms and general procedures, just haven't talked to people that have gone through the process. Would Jeffco be receptive to NFA requests?

When I got mine in Arapahoe county, the Lady at the window said on on line 90 days before it expires to renew it.

there is a whole forum here NFA related. as for BG check. one is performed every time you apply for NFA and CCW. My current job (for now) required a major security check. even with attached info regarding security clearance that one was 60 something days wait time.

I checked before I moved, they said I could either renew with El Paso (when the time comes), or go through the app process anew with Aarapahoe. I go down to the Springs every so often anyway, so I'll just renew with El Paso. It's cheaper that way too. But sure as I'm sitting here, I have a CHP issued by El Paso County with my Aurora address on it.

OK, I learn something new everyday about our messed up, nonconsistant system on this site.

Yep, you can continue to change your address on your original CCW even if you move out of the county. :)

When I got mine, I went into the Elbert County S.O. on the 91st day, and told them I was there to pick up my permit. They asked me if anyone called to tell me it was ready and I simply said, "No, nobody called. But it's been more than 90 days so I'm here to pick it up."

15 minutes later it was in my wallet. I have no idea why it took so long. My wife got hers in about 60 days, and that was over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

It takes up to 90 days simply because they can take up to 90 days.

It takes 90 days because the law says they are allowed to take a maximum of 90 days. I got mine on the 89th day.

Said another way:

Q - "Why does it take 90 days?"

A - "Because they don't allow us to take 120 days."

Took less than that for the bill that would added a constitutional amendment for permitless carry to get shot down.

I got mine in Arapahoe county in 05 and it took 55 days. I renewed last year, also in Arapahoe county and walked out with it the same day.

Took my wife-to-be 90 days in Arapahoe County last summer.

Took Adams County in 2005 95 days for mine.

They must have forgot to call you. I received mine through Elbert last year. It took about 34 days.

Already mentioned this in the "waiting" thread, but took Denver 32 days. Took another guy 34 days around the same time as me.

No. I stopped in a couple times before the 90-day limit (my internet phone service was down) and they told me they were still waiting on the background check.

Seems like it should have gone quicker than that because I've also been pulled through the TSA fingerprinting and background checks in Denver and Chicago. But as is normal these days, government agencies are pretty well firewalled and don't pass information back and forth.

I renewed my permit in Arapahoe county last Dec.
5 years ago they said to renew it 90 days before it expired--now it's all changed --for the better
I downloaded and printed the forms.
Walked in and handed in the forms--met with a person in a couple minutes.
Some stuff on some of the forms had changed so we had to redo a couple questions.
Took my new pic
Left with my new permit in less than 1/2 hour.
The fee was about 1/2 of what it was the first time too.
Might want to call them before you renew because the renewal has changed--plus they were very friendly and everything went real smooth

Douglas county was tough. My initial application took almost two weeks before I had my permit in hand.

A few years back a went in to renew at lunchtime, got re-printed, new photo taken and the deputy said that it would probably be a week or two. I drove back up to my office only to see that I had a voice mail that my permit was ready to be picked up.

So, I drove back down to Castle Rock and picked up my license. The deputy said that he had my permit and two others ready to go so he stopped by the Sherrif's office and had him review/sign them.

So far, Douglas county isn't a bad place to bet.

For both my initial CCW and my renewal a couple years ago, Adams Co. took almost all of the 90 days.

OTOH, an old friend of mine on the western slope (not sure what county) contacted me yesterday and said he got his in 5-6 days.

Seems like CO needs to update its BG system. When I lived in PA I got my CCW permit in avout 25 minutes. When you buy a gun in PA the dealer calls it in, a person answers immediately, and you are good to go in about 15 mins from "Ill take it" to "Cash or credit".

The Concealed Handgun Permit and the Background Check are 2 different things. You don't need to apply for a CCW permit to buy a gun. There is no Firearm Owner ID's, no 15 day waiting period, no magazine limit in Colorado and Denver has one but its in violation of Colorado Law IMHO. Background checks take as long as they need to. CCW shouldn't take as long as they do and I feel we should pressure our reps to man the hell up a little bit and pass permit-less carry. That way getting a permit can be taken down a peg or two.
