+1, but I didn't think they were that great either. I thought Fergie was going to show her naughty bits with that outfit and that kept my interest :)
They suck out loud.
I checked work during halftime, my mother watched them, she said they were terrible.

Yeah, they don't suck in the studio. I like their hit songs, the few they have. There are lots of bands/singers that just don't do that well live.
I didn't help that half the time the mics were off (the other half I was wanting them off).

While I agree that they totally blew chunks, I also noticed that they had a few microphone malfunctions.
You could just barely hear the singers sing for a second until their mic's got turned on. Like I said, this occured a few time - noticed it first with Fergie.
I just wonder if it was done intentionally to show the audience that they were really singing and not just lip sync'ing (had plenty of controversey on that topic through the years.

I'm with everyone that thinks the BEPs sucked hairy donkey balls. Commercials were good but half-time has become the time to go get some food and take care of those biological urges.
Do you think it would have been just as good without the 9/11 tribute?
I do have to applaud them for doing that though.
I really like U2, so I'd say yes. Like I said, it beats a bunch of 60 year old washed up rock stars.

I don't much care for Aguilera but I'll give her credit for carrying on to where a lot of people missed her flub, owning up to flubbing it afterward and not carrying on like Roseanne Barr.
I cant believe that I even sat through that and wasted my time! Terrible!!! The whole pre-game thing with Christine Aguliar- National Anthem and now the Black Eyed Peas.

Didn't watch a lick of any of it-too busy in the shop threading muzzles.
I have heard cuts of C.A. and her FUBAR of the SSB. For a "Professional" entertainer to foul up the most revered song at the most revered sporting event in the Nation is pathetic.
Hell, I have been to plenty of sporting events where a 9 year old belted it out loud and clear.
I think an earlier post hit the nail on the head: if they would quit trying to "Hip it Up" and just sing it the way it is meant to be sung: From the Heart.
As far as Rosanne's version- she should have been taken out to the parking lot afterwards and molested with a chain saw.
From a musician - I know they are "known" for their use of Autotune. However, groups always use way too much of the stupid program. The show in its entireity was too concieved. They had some good ideas but they just didn't pull them off. And what was with the outfits? Were they on the soundtrack of Tron or something? I thought it was horrible, but not as horrible as messing up the NATIONAL ANTHEM. Did you see the horror on the soliders faces? HAHAH.

Brother, you missed absolutely NOTHING. In fact anyone who'd butcher the National Anthem like she did, could get shot for treason or at least domestic terrorism. Just my opinion of course.

It's so stupid! I think it's more because their voices suck live without editing. I'm glad I didn't watch the whole thing.
Two fold problem with that now a days:
1. Singers are too reliant on technology instead of their own ears to bring their voices into the correct key when they are off pitch. This technology can also be used to brighten or darken their natural voice so what we (the general populace) hear as "such and such artist" is not what we hear in a "live" show and thus they automatically suck.
2. The general populace has their ears trained to the "studio" and pre-recorded sounds of pop music that a natural and neutral acoustic show is now boring.... hence the need to show skin or have other amazing effects (lights, fire, etc).
To prove the point: I've asked several people at work what they thought about the SSB. Main answer: "It was boring, there was like totally nothing going on with it!" (No mention of the left out stanza, mixed lyrics, melismatic overkill, etc.)
Melisma is a musical device. Basically means taking one word and drawing it out using repeated patterns. For instance, in Agulerias (or however you spell it) rendition of the SSB, the word "Brave" had about 17 different vocalizations. This is called a melissma.

IMO nothing tops super bowl 25 and whitney houston. to me that is the quintessential anthem. I can't hear it without getting emotional.

the " real" problem with the black eyed peas...............
They let a TV sound mixer mix it for you and I to hear over the TV...
if you used a concert mixer they would not have had the mics not being "live" (turned on) at the right times... also he would have listened to them in the head set and figured out they sounded like CRAP and needed some Eq'ing. BADLY ESP Fergie.
I know a ton of out of work sound guys and this HACK got the gig ... shameful if you ask me . I've worked a TON of concerts, and I've heard plenty a band sound just like the album while live.( not just full bands but "track" artists like the BEP, and Christina) bit of reverb here.. a bit of delay there..a crap load of EQ on the vocals.....
If my sound guy let the artist sound like that.. I would first off smack him in the back of the head .. then dragged him out back and shot him after it .
As for Christina...................
I missed it live .. but it was not as bad as everyone said .. she screwed up one line... ( not excuse able for a " mega star" that has zero excuse for being nervous ) not half the song like others have said . as for her .. rendition ... it sucked. but coulda been MUCH worse.
I used to work for 3 different hockey teams( AV's, CC Hockey, and the Former Colorado Goldkings) and the Nuggets as well as a TON of other events where the Anthem was sang.
Seen it screwed up .. seen it done so well I teared up ....
