I heard on Gun Talk Radio (Tom Gresham made the statement) that the ATF was smuggling guns into Mexico to trace them back into the U.S. then claim that there is a problem with guns being smuggled into Mexico by drug runners. The problem is that one of these guns was used to kill a US Border Patrol agent. Some US Senators are aware of this issue and it could be a very explosive political situation.

Is there a government agency more questionable than the ATF?

I was just watching Fox mid-day with Megan Kelly a few minites ago. Now coming out that the Ice agents shot in Mexico a couple of days ago were unarmed - completely! It seems that the Mexicans have had a policy since about 1990 that all US LEO/Feds/etc in Mexico must be unarmed.

I'm stunned. How could our government agree to put our own people totally in harms way? It seems to be the US government is AT LEAST partially complicit in the one agent's death and the other agent's severe wounding.

AT A MINIMUM, the US government should immediately pull all US agents, etc out of Mexico immediately, and never agree to send them back until the Mexican gov unilaterally agrees to allow the agents armed however they choose to be armed all the time.

If I was a family member of the slain US agent, I would be talking to the best lawyer I could find about a criminal and civil suit vs the US government for criminal negligence, etc.

More and more clear the Feds truly do not care about their citizens - even those acting in an official capacity on their behalf. Hard to understand where total incompetence ends and just plain evil begins with them. Be vigilant people.

I saw an article online at CBS News regarding the ATF's gunrunner program gone awry.

Anyone who thinks that BATFE wasn't allowing thousands of guns over the Mexican border isn't paying attention. It actually started in the last year of the Bush admin and consisted of a few dozen or so guns that they wanted to use to trace the supply routes to the cartels in Mexico.

in 2009, after high ups in the Obama admin were briefed on the scheme, they ramped the ATF approved gun running into high gear. Why? You don't get much more cartel intel with 2000 guns than you would with the trickle they had before. BATFE was actually instructing store owners to allow high volume purchases and to report them after the fact. They were told not to stop what were clearly straw purchases. Why? It makes no sense from a LE perspective, but all kinds of sense from a political one.

I believe this was a cold and calculated plan by Obama's team to create a "crisis". It was a matter of time before these guns made their way back to this side of the border to be used in drug crimes and cop killings. They'd have their smoking guns and use the crisis to push for a "sensible" gun bill. They never counted on several ATF agents outing them when federal agents were killed. They never counted on liberal CBS to run with the story.

If you want to learn about how this sordid mess unfolded, how hard it was to get powerful people to listen, and how the ass covering is proceeding ahead of congressional hearings, here's a great chronology from the guys that got it started:

in-depth interview with David Codrea and Mike Vanderboegh, the guys that first broke the story, recorded 9 March. Some notes:

How the agents came forward.
How Codrea and Vanderboegh shopped the story to news outlets.
How the WashPost tried to bury the story
Role of U.S. Senator Jeff Sessions and later Senator Grassley.
Not just ATF. It's DOJ (Lanny Brewer running the project), State and DHS.
How they had to threaten and cajole Session's senatorial staff until they paid attention to the agents that came forward.
How the NRA ignored the story at first.
Bill Newall the Phoenix SAC that came up with the gun walking scheme during the Bush admin.
The gun that killed B.P. agent Terry: Sold by Lone Wolf, a FFL in Glendale. The Lone Wolf FFL is also outed as an ATF CI. He sold the guns over retail to the buyer that ATF busted when the scandal finally broke. It was done with ATF permission - it wasn't a "regular" OTC sale.
How Daryl Issa, the chairman of the House Oversight committee wouldn't get off his ass and pay attention. (As of 3/31 I should point out that he is paying attention now once NRA got on board and CBS called for an interview).
Project Gunrunner is still active. It hasn't stopped.

If I were a gun shop owner, and the ATF told me to go ahead with doing something illegal, I'd say, "Okay boss!" then not do it at all. What are they going to do? Bust me for following the law? In court, I'd say, "If the ATF wants to sell guns illegally, then they can do it themselves."

I don't understand how this happened.

The answer is quite simple. Legalize guns in Mexico.
