I inherited this. I don't which model S&W it is. Anybody recognize it? It's a .38 Special and no indications as to the model on it.

If you open the cylinder you will see a stamping on the yolk. (the bridge that connects the frame and cylinder) It will have a model number and it might have a dash with a series number. Obviously if it is a series 1 gun it won't have a dash with a second number.

There could be a stamping on the top strap also. That's the piece between the hammer and barrel above the cylinder.

It looks like a model 10 series or equivalent by specifics it could be a 10,11,12,13 or a newer 64.

If the top strap is stamped M13 it is an Air Force survival pistol which were all recalled...don't shoot this one.

The only 3"bbl that Smith produced like that in any numbers was the Model 13 Military/Police. Obviously it could be a cut down 4" of any of the other models.

Why were they recalled?

Refering to the M13
Issued in 1953 and recalled in 1954, the frame and cylinder was aluminum and stretched after only a few rounds fired making a very dangerous situation. The forcing cone got further and further away the cylinder as well as the top stap being eaten away as it became more and more exposed. They were just waiting to come apart.

The Air Force Survival piece would make an excellent addition to a collection, but most were returned (destroyed) and replaced by S&W.

The Model 10T was produced from 1957 on with the model 64 in Stainless from 1970 on both ending about 2000.

A 3" M10 and no zit for an integrated hammer lock...very nice!

S&W is having that same problem with these newer Scandium and Titanium guns. The blast is eating away at the inside of the top strap. They started putting a small steel tab up there to cure the problem. It's the only steel on the whole gun. Karl.

Just like you, the S&W's of my Grandfather and my Father that my Dad gave me before he passed could never be replaced at any cost. Ever.


I only hope my Son gets the same feeling giving them to his Son, someday.
