BIG SIGN AT TANNER FOR CLIPS!

maybe you auto-pistol hooligans will let those of us gentlemen who prefer a more...civilized handgun get excited about clips finally!

But odds on we will just be doubly pissed expecting a mother-load of full-moon clips, or heaven help us a few speed stips too boot, only to find a bunch of crappy old Beretta 92 mags and a stack of rusting Sterling 22lr magazines.

Whenever I hear "high capacity clip" I just think, "that must be hard to handle" I mean a 30 round stripper clip of 223 would be almost a foot long! I would love to see that speed reload.

OTOH (not trying to start a flame war here, understand):

I have a friend at work who has been shooting nearly as long as I have (40+ years). While he and I both know the difference, he occasionally refers to the thing inside the frame of his 1911 as a "clip". I just forget it; we both know what he's talking about and I don't let simple things like that get in the way of a good conversation.

At the SHOT show last month, I heard lots of "experts" (retailers, dealers, exhibitors, etc.) use the word clip instead of magazine.

Remember, a magazine is also something that has glossy color pages and lots of advertising, and that can confuse people, too. And sometimes they even have some fold-out "stripper" clips, if you know what I mean.

So, I say, LET IT GO, MAN!

Sounds like a few of you have had military indoctrination for the name of a weapon loading devices as magazines and the name of a device that loads the magazine as a clip.

NOW to bust some of your military indoctrination....

Magazine comes from the navy as to where ammunition or components to make a weapon fire are stored before putting it into battery.... or chambered.

Clip by weapon definition is a device for loading a magazine.

Now here is where it gets grey... and I am sorry for those that will now get their panties in a twist and silently or out loudly scream, "Nooooo!"

If the ammunition storage area happens to be inside the weapon the magazine is internal like the M1 Garand; and is loaded with clips. Just like almost all auto loading pistol where the ammunition is stored in the grip. The grip becoming the magazine and loaded with CLIPS!!!
It could be a magazine if it extends out the weapon like a tube magazine in the 30-30 or a 22lr rifle. Now if there is an extension outside the weapon it is a magazine, like what is used in many military style rifles.

So by definition.. internal storage... loaded with a clip (didn't say stripper clip... just clip or loading clip)
External and possibly partially internal... loaded with a magazine.

So, what do I call them personally? I call them magazines. But you might need to get down off that high horse just because some DI was yelling at you that they are magazines not clips doesn't mean that the DI knows what he is talking about. He just wanted everybody using the same terminology. That's the military way don't ya know.

Clip to me is another "fear word" that anti's will use against us. Just like assault rifle. Are they? Maybe but no one will ever hear me refer to my AR as an assault rifle.

Proper terminology will also standarized every one to prevent confusion. If you tell some one you need a glock clip you may end up with a belt attachment. Or if you say pull out on the mushroom on the AP side they may end up pulling out the feed select solenoid, then we'll all be in trouble.

Raise your hand if you got that last reference.

I don't have as much problem with assault rifle as I do assault weapon. At least an assault rifle isn't a made up term meant to scare the uninformed. I do enjoy correcting people who try to tell me that the "AR" in AR-15 means assault rifle...

You know when I buy on Gunbroker thier search engines lists magazines and clips together on rifles and pistols. For example when you run any pistol in the search engine one of the links comes up= Pistol Parts > Magazines / Clips (http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/SearchResults.aspx?SearchType=0&Timeframe=0&Keywords=rami&Cat=4014&Items=50) . Wish they of all the businesses would correct that.

everyone knows what everyone else means, so; clip or magazine... it doesn't bug me. A magazine is just a spring-driven enclosed clip when you think about it.

Stripper clips I just call strippers (makes me go to my happy place in my mind).

DAMMIT don't you know that for reloaders you screw it all up by saying stuff like that. If it is ready to fire completely assembled then it is called ammo or ammunition. What are you really talking about?[ROFL1]

Bullet, round or cartridge?

While I occasionally substitute the last two words depending on context, the first one is something totally different. If I handed you a few 9mm bullets and you thought you could load them into that high capacity magazine and shoot them just as I gave them to you, you wouldn't be able to do it. [Beer]

Shit holmes those are caps.
And a clip is something Eazy-E went into the house to get, with his Mac-10 on the side of his hip.

Seriously this isn't something that riles me up in arms over, i just appreciate proper terms for the sake of confusion.

lol. As we get further and further into the working mechanics of the weapon I'm sure there a million terms for every working component. When we run out of that, we can get a scientist to argue the terminology of the element makeup of those components.

Terminology standardization with development of a bitchslap/IP protocol and everyone would be on the same page within a month or two. [LOL]

It doesn't bother me tremendously, but it is a sign that the speaker may not know what they're talking about.

Same goes for people that refer to cartridges as bullets.

Keep in mind that for many years we had an aunt living with us that was an Elementary Education major (and eventually teacher) ... so I had my knuckles wrapped several times a day over proper grammar and pronunciation of everything (not just gun stuff) from about 7 to 10 yrs old. Thankfully she never saw me write for I fear what she'd have to say about my run-on sentences and misuse of ellipses [Tooth] .
