The Fort Collins Coloradoan headline today:
Stock up for pending pandemic
"Owens urged residents to make flu plans, buy disinfectants such as bleach and stock enough food to last one to two months..."
We've been thinking about this for a while, but now finally mainstream press is pumping it. Is anyone else out there concerned?
Is anyone adding to their preparations?
My wife thinks that those of us who read alot of science fiction are more apt to take this seriously.
Edit: title change, obviously Co AR-15'ers arent taking bird flu seriously enough [wink]
Well, I think it's a shame that a "public" news outlet would go about inspiring panic and undo concern over the Flu thing. I strongly advise people to do the real research on this, especially where H5N1 is concerned. Anything I say about it would be worthless IMO, but I've done some research and checked up on the science behind it. I'm not stocking up just for a Flu concern personally. Zombies on the other hand... damn now that's scary

I think the whole bird flu thing is overrated, but the media is milking the fear factor for all it's worth. It's probably gonna end up like SARS, which killed what, 50 people worldwide? Non-issue.

WHAT?!?!
What is this about a Zombie pandemic.. How should I prepare for this? What is the best way to kill a zombie? Aren't they already dead?

Looking back at Katrina
I think the Govt. is in favor of anything that encourages preparedness
No matter how unlikely
My favorite quote from the whole post-Katrina reviews and hearings was when the spokes person from FEMA said something to the extent of...
We need to have the right plans and equipment in place, along with the proceedures that will allow us to say, we're from the Federal Goverment and We're here to help... and not have everyone laugh.
So to say the goverment wants you to be prepaired would be an understatement. If you expect the goverment to provide for you, then that's your own damn lazy fault.

If only everyone understood this!!!!

i don't know anyone who does not have some kind of disinfectant in their house. unless they have an adversion to cleaning!!
we'll see if the coloradoan prints my letter to the editor regarding their scare tactic reporting.

They likely will since they claim they print all letters submitted.
Thinking bird flu is a bunch of hooey is the general theme of the replies so far, I guess I'll start another thread then.
I see where you're going with this and usually with this crowd of cynics SHTF conversations don't last more than a post or two.
The reality... I think anyone who heeds history, even recent history, takes small steps. Personally, I have been buying ammo in two types... range and just in case. Usually about 500-1000 rounds per weapon. Match grade .308 ammo being the exception, that crap I can't afford to have a 1000 rounds of :) Out side of that, I have some equipment that is dual use, camping and just in case. There are things I'd like to have but just don't have the justification to get in quantity. I've had discussions with my family and roomates centered around what the initial reactions should be in case of some sort of emergency, but realistically, they revolve around getting home to the gear and guns. I think trying to plan much futher than that and perhaps a secondary rally point is moot.... no plan survives contact! (thank you Mr. Murphy)
What are you looking to get comments on?

I think I've got a SHTF scenario bouncing around in the back of my head, which is definitely part of the motivation this time for me wanting to build an AR. Thinking it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a couple thousand rounds of 9mm and .223 on hand either.

The media is over-hyping everything these days. One person dies from e-Coli and they freak-out like it's a pandemic.

I did a google search on how to kill a zombie. All sites agree that you must destroy the brain. Here are my top ten favs
10. Crossbow
Gotta be a shot between the eyes
9. Chainsaw
The chainsaw can cut through even the thickest skull and will destroy a brain in seconds.
8. Toaster
When swung by the cord, one can get incredible velocity; also makes toast.
7. Hammer
Another popular tool. Good for the strong and weak alike, and perfect for the novice zombie killer.
6. Fire poker
Heavy, well sized, and very versatile, serving the stab-happy and blunt-crazy zombie killer alike.
5. Pump-action shotgun
Most movie characters are terrible with the shotgun, but it'll always be a popular choice.
4. The Old Door Trick
When zombies try to come in, slam the door on its head.
3. Rocket Launcher
Legend has it a U.S. college student wrote an essay called, "The Best Way to Kill a Zombie is with a Rocket Launcher." Who could argue with that?
2. "The View"
To kill a zombie, you must destroy its brain, and what better way to do that than listening to Starr Jones and Meredith Viera?
1. Motorcycle
Go Milla Jovovich! Her scene riding her bike down the aisle of a church in RE:2 was amazing. A must in any zombie invasion.
Bonus: Flame thrower - Can someone bring one of these to the next shoot??
