So I need to make a personal record of my firearms. I was going to just list the make, model, and serial numbers. Is there anything else that I should include? I don't know when I acquired a single one of them though.

What do you guys on your lists?

Write down make, model and serial number on plain white paper. Take a pictue of the firearm with the information showing.
Store the information.

another good thing to do is find out what the market value is on them just incase you need to file an insurance claim to get them replaced
i know theres a book that comes out every year or so thats like the blue book of guns-Gun Digest?
im sure one of the ffl dealers would have one

Include all accesories, sometimes they are just as much if not more than the firearm.

Why? The rust they have should be enough.

I do an Excel spreadsheet with make, model, ser#, optic type, optic ser#, weapon light type, number of mags, accessories, and approximate value.

Used to be a company armorer, old habits die hard.

I use Google Docs - maintains accessibility in case of catastrophe.

I log Make, Model, Caliber, Serial#, Date acquired, Date disposed, and valuation.

Unfortunately, I just recently started, so there's quite a few blanks :-X

LOL at accessories. I'm poor guys. The only accessories I have is usually a half box of ammo. It is a good suggestion, I just had to laugh at this point since I don't have any really.

I like the idea about the number of mags though.

Great responses everyone. I was going to use Google Docs also. You can upload pictures on there now as well.

Somebody already started a go-by spreadsheet.

I have a master list that has 20 entries per gun. The majority of the information would be considered trivia. I have several other lists that are shorter versions of the master list. One is a list of just the information I need to report a theft.

I have pictures of all my guns also.

I scan all my reciepts also.

I usually burn multiple copies of my records to a disc whenever it needs to be updated. At least one is stored away from my home.

A flat bed scanner makes good pictures of handguns and other small items. I find it easier to use than a camera for good detail close ups. Items a couple inches away from the serface are still in sharp focus.

I use Clayton Pryor's NM Collector Software JE. It is excellent. Download the full version for free for 30 days, see if you like it, and if you do the download is only $19.95. You can import pictures into the database and print out several different types of reports.

Here is the website: http://www.nmcollectorsoftware.com/templates

Available software that may meet your needs, or at least give you an idea on how you may want to do your inventory.

I keep a copy of items on two USB memory sticks, one in my safe tucked in an out of the way corner and one at a relitives house.
It also includes pictures and details of other valuable items such as televisions jewelry and such.

I like all this for sure. I do this on an excel spread sheet, which these days you can do all kinds of things with excel-so don't let the program scare you. I also like the pictures a lot. I take lots of pictures. I keep a hard copy of the most current items in my firesafe, and keep an electronic copy on two different hard discs (not on my computer). I guess I am just a little paranoid. My list is actually more than guns, I refer to mine as a sensative items list (sort of like the military). I have MP3 players on it, computers, some knives, other electronics, etc. I also take photos of anything of value that does not have serial numbers such as all my wife-to-be's jewelry, all of my military coins (front and back), etc.

In the event you need to claim insurance or provide it to law enforcement after a burglary you already have it. And trust me, the cops will love you for this and it makes locating items a hundred times easier when they start looking at pawn shops or comparing pictures to other pictures of found property against the data bases of other LE Agencies (which is done quite often now-as long as their are pictures to do it or an extremely good description, hence why pictures are so good).

Feel free to use any of these ideas, in fact I encourage it.

This

I also include make/model of any mods and accessories with each and price paid. That part is just for insurance reimbursement purposes.

I may have to update mine. Most of it is on poloroids with the info written on the white strip at the bottom. Sitting in a fireproof box.

Many of receipts printed now are on thermal paper. It will fade quickly. Make a photocopy of it is you want a more permanent record.
